First time I heard AL was on this broadcast As a trumpet player in a small combo I became an instant fan and began collecting his records.Three years later my daughter Debbie was born. She grew up to the sound of his music.Twenty years later while on vacation in New Orleans she met and later married the bass player in the band.An accomplished pianist Al Hirt hired her also and she joined the band. She now plays the calliope on the river boat '' Natches'' Hirt was the greatest trumpted player in my large collection of records and the nicest man I ever met.He told me Harry James was his idol and Rafeal Mandez the best teacher and player. thanks for sharing.
Al Hirt One of the truly great trumpet players with a huge sound, flawless technique always having fun with the music, He is up there with my heroes Rafeal Mendez, Doc Severinsen, Harry James. Enjoy this 24 minutes of the King having fun performing his own trumpet magic. Carnival of Venice is Brilliant Showmanship
This is a sleeper video. And to think HE was the featured artist at the halftime of Super Bowl One with The Univ. of Arizona Marching Band! This is a real artist.
The fabulous trumpet artist Al Hirt and his sextet with (cl) Pete Fountain, (tb) Bob Havens (guessed), voc Dinah Shore (host), Roy Rogers (forgive Al's humorous antique Chevy-Ad 12:30 to 14:30) Script: 0:00 Interview with Al Hirt 1:27 Trumpet warm up (Al Hirt) 2:00 I love Paris (Cole Porter) 3:34 Glory, Glory Halleluja (Battle Hymn) 6:55 South Rampart Street Parade 9:29 Bourbon Street (?) 12:30 Duett with chevys 14:30 Interview with Al Hirt 15:50 Carneval of venice (Paganini) (Variations over "O mamma, mamma cara") *) 20:05 Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans ? (Louis Alter) (*) Carneval of Venice in german vernicular : "Mein Hut, der hat drei Löcher"
Pee Wee Spitelera was Pete Fountain's student & protégé. Pee Wee played in the Lawrence Welk "Junior Band" for almost 2 years in 1957 thru 1959. He was on the air every week playing Baritone Sax and Clarinet. He played the same model mouthpiece as Pete Fountain and sounded almost exactly like Pete. By the way, towards the end of Battle Hymn on this video - Al plays part of the song Fiddle Faddle written by Leroy Anderson and often played by the Boston Pops. And the trombone player is NOT Bob Havens - in later years Al had a great player named Ricky Nelson - but I don't know who this is on the video.
Wow! Back when there was still some sanity and real music in the nation! Who are the other players? This is Showbiz Dixie, but they could also do the real thing, I'm sure. This is frenetic so as to prove virtuosity, and it does.

I just threw my trumpet into the lake! WOW!!!
Truly one of the greatest trumpet virtuoso's to ever play the trumpet. I have been listening to him for 50+ years and never tire of hearing him.

Al Hirt the great, the monster.
Remember when Al Hirt performed at the Super Bowl? How things have changed.

Nothing but the best for Dinah!
Actually this is not Pete Fountain on clarinet....its Joseph T. Pee Wee Spitelera playing clarinet.
What he plays between 16:00 and 20:00 makes me want to quit trumpet! Awesome!!
That was the Del Stiegers version of The Carnival Of Venice
Wow...Pete Fountain when he still had hair.
That's Pee Wee Spitelera, another superb clarinet player Al worked with. Even when Pete had hair it was never that thick.
+wannawatchu66 Pete fountain never had hair- even when he was born.
