ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED with Intel Core Ultra 7: What worked (and what didn't)

  • When I first got the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED, I thought I was working with a good laptop with a great OLED screen. What I discovered instead was something that feels like a paradigm shift in laptops, thanks to the new Intel 14th Gen Meteor Lake chips! Thanks to the Intel Core Ultra 7 in this ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED, I feel like we're at the beginnings of an exciting new era in notebooks.

    Josh, man I started watching to learn something about what you're covering, and then noticed halfway through after the initial stuff is covered, that I'm sitting back sipping my Coffee and enjoying this like I'm watching a movie... Your Zen tea/coffee break vibe has absolutely permeated into these new videos. After watching tech videos you sometimes feel a bit tired from all the pros/cons and millions of graphs, but not even close here. Can't wait to tune into the next one! Hope you and everyone in the comments had a great Christmas 🙂

    Edit: just to add another oddball thing, retail reviews don't have the numpad on the trackpads, and I can confirm mine didn't as well. There was additionally a screen door effect on whites, probably due to the digitizer.
    I bought one of these and it was absolutely beautiful but died the same day I got it. Blue screened every 20 minutes then that time slowly went down till it blue screened every 60 seconds after turning on. I agree the keyboard is really good.
    The retail version also comes with a pen which I think is interesting as I didn't see reviewers mention it when I watched a few before hand.
    I'm hoping it was a fluke since these chips are so new, I just returned it and am contemplating re-buying it. I think either way I'll wait to see the silver available, my blue was covered in fingerprints just after a day. Wonderful device but I think I lost the hardware lottery.

      No matter how much people hype these new intel CPUs they often fall short with usage and power consumption, especially at this price point.
      For charging, all laptops get warm if you are working and charging honestly.
      I would recommend a MacBook Air (M1, M2, or M3 depending on your budget).
      OR
      If you want something similar to the one in the video or a windows laptop, buy an ASUS OLED UM325 just make sure you are getting an AMD and not an intel chipset (AMD chipsets usually perform better and consume less power than intel). The model I mentioned isn't the easiest to find since it's 2 years old and AMD laptops are less in supply in the market but if you find one, buy it it's worth it. The only downgrades from the laptop in the video would be that it's a slightly smaller 13 inch, it's FHD 1080P rather than 1200P, and 60hz BUT you get a more portable device, less laggy performance, nice OLED screen and WAY better battery life (close to 10 hours which is almost DOUBLE the one in the video).

It seems like there is a UX3402 but without the Core Ultra 7 CPU and Intel ARC with the older 11th gen i7 with Iris. So I take that you have the UX3405 which has the top of the line with windows 11 pro, stylus, sleeve, USB adaptor, where as the Q425MA-U71TB does not have the fancy external line designs, no fancy touchpad with the keypad, window 11 home, 16GB ram but with the powerhouse of the Core Ultra 7, Intel Arc. and that's it. It's confusing to say the least, where there is a UX3402 non-ultra 7 out there at best buy right now. Anyways, great review here.

      @davidm2418 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mohit5165 I'm not sure. Asus released a few different versions of the Zenbook with 155H. The one I have (UX3405) has a 2880 x 1800 OLED touch screen with up to 120hz and optional variable refresh rate. I recently found out they have another sku under Q425MA that has a WUXGA screen at 60hz. That's also a touch screen. There could be regional skus out there as well, so I can't really say.
      That said, I mentioned that second sku because it is currently selling for $1,049.99, which is like $300 (Q425MA) less than the one I bought. Same chip set, but 16gigs of ram (half of what I got). Most of the other specs appear to be the same, but there's a slightly different exterior finish. Thing is, the touch screen really isn't going to affect how you use it. I never use touch with my laptop, but I suppose it's a good option just in case. It really isn't going to impact the price point all that much either. So I really wouldn't go out of my way to avoid it.
      WUXGA might actually make more sense on at 14" laptop. For one, you'll almost never hit 2880 x 1800 for games with this laptop. I'm always reducing resolution down to WUXGA or 1080p anyway, so having that as native might have been better on the gaming front. Plus, you'd end up saving more battery power in normal use. That 2880 x 1800 is great for video though. But 16gigs, which is adequate for just CPU use, it not really great for the 155H with Arc graphics. It limits the amount ARC can allocate for dedicated use.

I am watching this on my 2021 M1 MBP, which I run hard all day and after 12 + hours I have plenty of power left without ever looking, thinking, or worrying about a thing. I was super excited for this new generation. Maybe a step in the right direction, but looks like amazing hardware on a Windows machine may still be a few years out. :( Love love love Windows. The hardware? Not so much.... :(

    Good review! Would point out, though, that all of the big novelties mentioned were already present in recent AMD chips: faster NPU, Meteor Lake's Arc just matches AMD's iGPU, performance unplugged was not that lower, battery life is still state of the art for Windows laptops. Since Meteor Lake is basically catching up to AMD's 7040 series, I think it's very likely that AMD 8040 will beat it handily. That said, there is probably one area where Intel will win: video editing, as AMD does not yet include a media engine as powerful as Intel's.
