For anyone using an MMO mouse, I always recommend changing your hotbars to 3x4. This allows your hotbars to visually represent where they'll be on your mouse, making the muscle memory sink in faster. This also allows you to put your Alt, Shift, and Ctrl hotbars next to each other in the same style.

I agree. I do this, and I know my keybinds no matter the ability or job just by where they sit on the bars. Visually it is soooo much clearer.

do you use modifiers to use everything in the same mouse? i use it but now im thinking if it is a good idea.
For example i tend to split like Hotbar 1 all single target or heals and hotbar 2 AOE and DPS for healers. im open to suggestiong

    • @kickcross1
      @kickcross1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@MauricioPlaza I do roughly the same thing, putting single targets on Hotbar 1, AOEs on Hotbar 2 with Shift, buffs/self-heals on Hotbar 3 with Ctrl, and then anything I rarely use on Hotbar 4 with Alt.

As someone who struggle to not mess up skill rotation and while not looking too much on hotbars, it's very helpful. My brother gave me one after he bought portable console. Twas hard to adjust, now i'm comfortable playing with it and able to familiarize my skill rotations.

I would recommend the Corsair scimitar. It's comfortable, you can move the 1-12 numpad for smaller or larger hands which is great and it has plenty of software DPI and RGB options. It took a week or two to get used to, I was a clicker at first. After some time it became natural. Luckily FF has great UI options without the need for plugins. I use 3, 3x4 hotbars using 1-12, shift+1-12 and ctrl+1-12. I couldn't play the game without it.

I use a G600 and after the 27 keys I can program across 3 hotbars I have F1-F4, Q E R F T and that covers every ability I need. As another commenter said have the hot bars in 3x4 format so the button grid matches the mouse button layout and makes muscle memory easy.

pro tip: Use A and D for strafing and don't bother with keyboard turning. Use mouse to turn. This gives you 2 extra keys (Q and E) that are easy to reach.

Yes indeed, while you don't NEED a MMO mouse, it makes a world of a difference with no just MMOs but for just about any game you would play. While I use one from Logitech, I would recommend getting the Razer mouse that has interchangeable parts. So you can swap out the MMO function with one that is good for MOBA games or if you don't want any side buttons at all.

  • @Hail2Reign

I use the Razer Naga and the Tartarus. Because the Tartarus has a D-pad with 8 directional inputs that are re-assignable through Razer's software I reassign up, down, left, and right to be Cntrl, Cntrl+Alt, Alt, Cntrl+Shft. Then, in FFXIV, you assign the corresponding hotkey and number assignment to the hot bars. With just my 2 thumbs I can press 48 keys for skills. It only took about 2 weeks of duty roulette to get used to it and re-memorize the rotations. Now that I have done this, I can't ever go back since it saves my hands and frees up the ability to move 24/7.

In fact, you can config your game Setup to match perfectly to the razor mouse-button layout. i did it in a way that gives me visual feedback, so i know every time on wich button is a certain skill. use the 4x3-layout and config the razor buttons like "1, 2,3,4 - cut
    5,6.7,8- cut

For sprouts or people who go from controller to K+M, it's probably the best purchase to do if you want to focus on MMOs (especially FF, 'cause you can have a clean UI with 3x4 hotbars) BUT for people like me who can memorize their rotation with shortcuts already with any random (or not so random) keybinds they got for years, it's hard... like HARD-HARD...
I purchased a Corsair Scimitar last week and the mouse seems nice. No problems when I was just scrolling around or playing some ARAM games on LoL to test it. So, I jumped into FF, went to a new layout, finished my new clean(er) UI, did all keybinds from scratch to 1-12 / shift+1-12 etc. and tried to do some casual stuff. Like some FATEs.
Even with my main job (PLD), it felt like when you try to draw with your weak hand! xD
My muscle memory just SLAPPED me in the face even for the most basic rotations...
If I stop for some months, 'cause now it's pretty much dead period 'til the next expansion anyway, I may consider coming back with the MMO mouse. I think this way it COULD work. Especially if they change some rotations anyway.

I used mmo mouse when i still starting the game before i wasn't accustomed to the keybind. After i took my time adjusting to the game flow & adjusting the keybind to fit within my left hand on keyboard, now i rarely use mmo mouse for spell usage only for movement instead (WASD, sprint key, walk toggle, jump, and also targeting)
edit: for keybind i use combination of F1F2F3F4, 12345, QERTY, FGH, VBN with using my pinky finger for either combination keybind with shift or ctrl. in the end it boils down to preference.

I switched to an MMO mouse a few months into 14, and while I was lucky enough to get a decent one first try, replacing it after awhile was definitely a journey in discovering all the little things that could make an MMO mouse infuriating to use. Part of the problem was that I have a very thin area that I can use as a mouse pad, so I'm constantly picking it up to recenter it. So when I got a mouse where the buttons were a bit too easily pressed, I would keep accidentally pressing a button when I just meant to lift up my mouse. Then I got one where the keys were too far back on the mouse, and it meant that I had to curl my hand uncomfortably to reach them.
It took about 3-4 tries to get a good one. A good key placement where the thumb can rest naturally, a little lip beneath the buttons that can be used to help grip it with the thumb without hitting keys accidentally, and keys that are spaced and molded just right so that they're all distinct enough that you can quickly figure out what's what just by touch, while still being close together enough to comfortably to reach every key.

They increase in number of buttons took a solid week of practice to get accustomed to but afterwards i found myself performing better, dropping weaves less often, and overall not having to bind so many wierd combinations. Before i had normal, shift, ctrl, and alt + now its all normal ctrl and shift. If you take the dive, spend 15 or 30 min a day running stone sky sea. Need is such a strong word, but it definitely can be useful. I had a Logitech for years, and when that died I moved to a Reddragon (just due to cost). I was mostly just using it for quality of life, mapping things like sprint, mount, etc. When I started leveling the Healer line, I mapped the party selection to my buttons, and it was a game changer. Hit 1 and start attacking the mob. Tank needs heals? Hit 2, toss some heals, hit 1 and go back to attacking. Someone is in the boonies and not being reached by my AoEs? Hit the party number for the boonie ranged, toss a heal, go back to attacking. So much faster and easier to just hit the party number with my thumb while still on my mouse than to click-to-select them (which was my previous method).

The comfortable grip and easy reach is definitively the number one factor for the mouse. I had nagas for years but swapped to an aerox 9 after the scroll wheel again started double clicking. And it was a terrible decision and I wish I'd tried to test it out before buying one. The buttons and button cluster are much longer than on the naga as well as angeled away making the 1-3 buttons nearly unusable and 4-6 not great either. To the point my hand will end up feeling strained after a while when actually using the side buttons. Feels like they just took an aerox 5 and slapped a numpad on the side without giving it any thought. Really wish there were more good options for proper mmo mice, especially slightly 'slimmer' ones.

Do you need it? No. Does it makes you life so much better that you are never going to want to go back to a normal mouse again? Yes. The change is like going from 1 monitors, to 2 monitors. Anyone who's experienced it will never want to go back a single monitor. Same thing with an MMO mouse. It is a massive QoL improvement when playing not just MMOs but pretty much any game, even FPSs, which require few buttons, still benefit from a MMO mouse.

to me it comes down to personal playstyle and what content you do in the game.
i'd say that outside of minmaxing for endgame raids, it doesn't matter how you set your hotbars, or how you activate your skills.
i tried a mouse with 9 thumb buttons, and i constantly kept fatfingering skills. the buttons were just too small and close to each others for me.
in the end i returned to my normal 2 button mouse and am happy with it till today.

For any body who mains MMOs i cant recommend a keypad like the razer tartarus V2 paired with an MMO mouse enough. I've been using a key pad since the original razer tartarus, about 10 years if im not mistaken, and has made every MMO a breeze. Even more so when you need to visualize what youre pressing, i have my hotbars in every game set up to be a grid of the keypad and the mouse... i never need to look at the bars cuz i know what button on each is going to do. but i mean like i said ive also been using them for a decade. But what really sets the keypad apart from other keypads is the thumb "Dpad" for movement, freeing up the area that would be WASD for action slots. 20+ buttons at your fingertips on the keypad and 10 more on the mouse. to put it into perspective for FF14, I have all the actions aside from 2 on lvl90 scholar on the bars and can press them without extra keypresses like "shift+1"... all the classes *ik some nerds gunna be like "erm actually theyre called jobs"* will fit all abilities between the mouse and keypad lol

If you're debating between going controller or MMO mouse The controller is cheaper, makes a metric F ton more contextual sense in FFXIV vs keyboard/mouse, and has several big disadvantages vs mouse. These are [in no particular order, and by no means is this a complete list] Area targetable spells are a pain, complex raid healing across raid groups is a no go for targeting reasons, and it's harder to type while you've got your hands full >.> I'd been using the naga line since the OG naga. I still have my V2 pro right here in front of me. I just... find no benefit.

I used the Corsair Scimitar for years, but it has next to no curve and the buttons are all flat without distinction. I eventually found it caused extreme pain in my index finger knuckle after long sessions due to subconciously holding my finger off the left click as it is so sensitive to click. I changed to the Naga Razor and due to the far better natural curve and sturdier clicking mechanism it is far superior in that sense. The side mouse button pad has really well defined button seperation too so it is way easier to use the third row of buttons without misclicking (on the Corsair they all feel the same under your thumb). I liked the Corsair, but after using Naga I would never recommend it over the Naga because of my personal experience. Each to their own, but I thought I would share in case someone reads this interested in trying a MMO mouse for the first time, somethings to consider.

This allows you to keybind 30+ keys easily with shift and alt/ctrl as a modifier on the side of the mouse. With mine, my thumb sits right on top of the mouse button so it's almost seamless, same with shift on the keyboard.

Hard disagree. I found a MMO mouse to be far more intuitive, then trying to come up with some weird keyboard scheme. WASD and crtl/alt/shift easily lets me have 48 slots to use all with just my thumb.

Yes, you need an MMO mouse unless you are a psychopath who wants Tab Target MMOs to be harder for you.
It is the equivalent of never learning to type because "I can look at the letters just fine." All of us who took the time to learn typing know it's an entirely new world of capability.
