Yeah, Nolan is a real big fan of practical effects. The rotating hotel scene in Inception was all practical effects too. The airplane scene in the start of Dark Knight Rises was practical effects too.
You could argue that since the explosion only happens once, that the outcome was still not 100% certain, therefore they couldn't know exactly what would happen, therefore from a CERTAIN POINT OF VIEW, still improvised... A stretch, but I don't care.
I read an article once about the "pencil trick." Apparently getting a pencil shoved into your skull via eye socket has happened a few times, but the victims turn out alright. It's usually something that happens while really really...really drunk, and you wake up with a splitting headache and a weird mark around your eye. The pencil doesn't actually penetrate into the brain, I guess your eye just gets shoved out of the way of it...? Ewww.
Maybe it didn't go through the eye. Maybe through the head. Even though I get that a pencil can't penetrate through the skull, but maybe it still can kill ya.

I have heard that the very ending was improvised before. The way I heard it however was not that it was a broken detonator, but that they were waiting for him to get into the bus so that he was safe before the demo expert actually hit the button.
It was planned because it was a real demolition. Ledger was never involved. They just filmed the actual demolition with no actors on set. This is a myth.
The most amazing part though is there was a camera in the bus with heath ledger and during the entire time heath stayed in character and didn't look at the massive explosion happening right outside the window. he just kept looking forewords. you can see it in the deleted scenes.
i don't know how to feel about this, on one hand its very informative on the other hand it takes away a bit of the magical improv acting Heath ledger can do
If it helps he stayed in character for the entire time that the bus drove away as in at no point do he turn around in his seat to watch the explosions as they were considering having a shot of him in the bus as it drove away

I just have to share my one claim to coolness. I was there, walking to a bus stop on my way home from evening class (about 10pm). I was crossing Lasalle st in front of a baracade, when suddenly I saw what looked like a crate pop up above the 8ft barricade, followed by a very loud crash. It terrified me and I didn't know what it was until I went to see the movie later that year.
They flipped the truck using an air cannon. Spielberg did the same thing in "Raiders." As the truck flips, you can see the mist from the cannon shooting out the bottom. As the compressed air expands, it cools very quickly and condenses the moisture in the air around it.
One time back when my then fianceé and I worked for a private courier service, it was the middle of winter after a blizzard and her car got stuck. At like 3AM we spend about 20 minutes digging it out of the snow to get it in the building to load it up for deliveries when a guy across the street yells from his porch, "You guys need some help getting unstuck?" Thinking how nice he is to offer help I yelled back, "sure, if it's no trouble!" He said, "no trouble at all, I'll help dig you guys out for $10" "On second thought, no thanks. We're good" I may also need to mention that we worked in the bad part of town and that guy on his porch at that hour was shady AF!
I always thought they meant the scene was improvised. Like the explosion was planned and Ledger knew when it would happen, but they just let him do his own thing instead of planning it out too much.
They put a huge piston that shoots out of the bottom of the truck to flip it. That's what all that white gas pouring out of the bottom of the it is. You can see it in any almost any movie with a car that flips over. Neat effect.
Fun fact this film was filmed in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and at the time the Pittsburgh Penguins where playing at the Mellon Arena that was about to be demolished and Christopher Nolan offered the same deal to Pittsburgh that he will demolish the building as long as you can film it but Pittsburgh denied his request due to union rights or a contract that was already with somebody else or something.
I LOVE when movies incorporate practical effects. I never liked it when movies used cgi for everything, especially in the early 2000’s because the cgi in most of those films including high budget have not aged that well.
