Somehow I missed in December the fact that someone seems to have recompiled San Francisco Rush for PC! Basically taking one of the best retro games of all time and improving on it in every way the same way we have seen with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time recompiled version and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mark recompiled version....except using the MAME original / arcade original files! It's frankly mind blowing! It's up there with OutRun 2, Daytona USA and Sega Race TV as far as my favorites go! Because retro gaming is better!

Developer here. The next major release, v0.7.0, will in fact be supporting SF2049. After that, v0.8.0 is planned to focus on multiplayer.
Well DM me or something when it’s live so I can run a vid day of! This is my type of stuff. Awesome work :)
Great news about the multiplayer! Fantastic work!
Is it possible to run this in the original arcade cabinet (obviously adding hardware to interface the cab with a PC) with proper coinage operation?
PS, thank you. Rush 2049, imo, is the best arcade racer ever produced.
You are a hero.
How I discovered Rush. I love going to the arcades, but was broke as a kid. One day, I sat on the Rush arcade machine, pretending to play the game, haha. I randomly pressed the coin release button, but I discovered that if you pressed it at the corner of the coin release button, it would give extra credit. Boy, I was there the whole day playing Rush. Good times haha
Haha hell of a discovery
This is why tuning into VIDEO GAME ESOOOOOTERICA is completely worth it! Thanks for the info, keep em coming..
Plenty more fun coming :)
I discovered this last week and cannot believe how great it is! I installed it on my desktop PC and my Steam Deck and it plays like a dream. I cannot wait to play SF2049! I hope Rush 2 gets a PC recompiled port one day.
Rush 2 and Wipeout 64 would be my dream decomps/recomps!
Dev said 2049 is next
Those would be great to have
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who daydreams of Rush 2 getting a recomp on the PC. Maybe it wasn't terribly popular but it was a terrific console exclusive that could definitely benefit
@polybius22 it’s a great game. Could be much better recomped for sure
It would be great if arcade versions of Cruis'n games were decompiled as well
Could def stand to benefit from it
Doable, but they would need to use the N64 versions as a base as the arcade game source code is already available but is written in in the assembly language for a very obscure processor ISA.
the N64 version (of at least the first one i vouch) emulates and plays great and can be run in high res and widescreen unlike MAME.
@@coleshores Hmm. I'm not really a programmer, but apparently there is a C compiler for the TMS320 series of processors... So, if a compiler can turn C code into assembly, why couldn't the inverse be done? I'm sure it's far more complicated than that. And, I'm sure people much smarter than I am have already explored all options, I'm just more curious than anything.
@ it was made in hand written assembly so it’s not really possible to decompile it. The reason why decompilers have become so good is that the original compiler followed a pattern in converting the C code in to Assembly whereas humans can write low level assembly in any myriad of ways.
Fortunately though, the N64 versions would make a great base to work upon and there is tooling to decompile N64 games back in to their original C code. The n64 version was coded in C
I hope this starts a trend of decompilation/recompilation projects for arcade games, that would be amazing.
It would be great for the 3D games of the 90s
Now, if only they could do the same with Hydro Thunder and Sonic the Fighters
I did not know that San Francisco Rush got decompiled, gotta have to try it out later, thanks for making me aware of this.
Neither did I til someone told me and it’s one of my all time favorites
Oh my God, so glad you posted this video! This is one of the things I've wanted so bad. Simply amazing having SF Rush running locked at 90fps on my Deck! Also, on their page they say they're preparing their code for 2049, so exciting!
And I can't wait to set this up on my laptop to see such an awesome classic running at 240fps!
It’s an awesome upgrade. Feels like a whole new game
"The cars have a certain weight and feel to them"
Hell yeah! That's what made the Stunt Level on 2 sooooooooooo good.
It’s that weight that really makes the game feel unique
@@VideoGameEsoterica My main vibes come from "CHECKPOINT!" I can't even see/hear the word without this soundbyte screaming in my brain haha.
I loved San Francisco Rush on N64. Never got the opportunity to try it in the arcade, so this is very interesting.
@@sniglom I always felt n64 played better than the Dreamcast version and never played the arcade either
Def give it a shot
Dreamcast version was 2049
What a time to be alive! Love all these preservation projects.❤
Especially this one. Love SF Rush
We definitely need more
This is amazing!!! I really hope they eventually do San Francisco Rush 2049 as well, as it's my favorite.
Dev stated 2049 is next :)
I swear, my subscription to this channel has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done on TH-cam! Thank you. 👍
Aww thanks! Glad you enjoy.
This is amazing, I love this franchise. Thanks for letting me know about this project.
Happy to share the news
You will not be disappointed playing this, these kind of projects need more exposure!
This is a very big milestone on the racing game genre, when obscure racing games only in the arcades becomes playable on PC, its a dream come true. I'd love to see other games get this kind of treatment like Road Burners or California Speed, those two games are awesome!
I hope we see a lot more come soon
@@VideoGameEsoterica You and me both, brother!
The amount of hours I spent playing San Francisco Rush on N64 would probably make you sick. I absolutely loved that game, the stunt multiplayer track, and going around getting all of those hidden Mountain Dew cans. Fantastic! I should download and check this out.
Haha I did the same with Rush 2
Love this... Definitely going to check it out with my wheel setup. Thank you for bringing this to my attention VGE!
Happy to do it. Everyone should know!
I had Rush for my N64 back in the day and maybe played the arcade version once (if that) at the time. When I finally set up MAME, Rush was one of the first things I played. I love this game. If there is any content exclusive to the console releases (eg, keys maybe), I hope the devs can add that in as well. That would be the definitive Rush collection! It's great to see arcade games getting in on recompilation 👍
This is a lot better than I expected, I thought well we've already got it in mame, but this is great at max settings and lovely hires!
It’s nice all versions run so well now
I'd love them to do the same with California Speed.
As would I
Me too, that game was a lot of fun and better than the N64 version!
Sorry, what was that? Someone wants to recompile Hydro Thunder? well, of course that would be a good idea...
@@SiincereARC pretty please with a cherry on top
@ HA, that's not me saying I would do it, that's me saying whomever wants to do it, they have my thumbs up on that.
Haha we can only hope
I’d play the crap out of it
@ I'm still trying to find reasons to setup and use XP/98 machines and I made one trying to go back to my ill-fated dreams of recreating earlier PC-Based arcade boards and ended up setting up the PC version of Hydro just to test it out on XP and I ended up basically playing all the way to the last 3 levels. I know each level way too well.
My childhood arcade racer now easier to play than ever? Hell yeah
Everyone will be happy about this news
I hope one day this gets ported to Dreamcast.
Would be fun to see
Imo, the best arcade racing games are Outrun 2, Sega Rally and Rave Racer.
All classics in my book
One of the best works I've seen to date! ❤
Absolutely no notes. All I want now is 2049
Had no idea about this. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, just had a quick go and was loving it. Gonna be hard to resist setting up the steering wheel again this weekend haha.
Haha you break that wheel out you hear me!
Wow thanks! Cannot wait to try this. Greetings from Schaumburg area.
IKEA land! Ok yes I know Schaumburg has more but it’ll always be IKEA to me
awesome, thanks, didn't even realized i don't have mame versions, they all are working great, some better than others, but good stuff :)
Glad you enjoyed
I’ve seen that game at my local arcade nearby a convenience store at a campsite.
It was everywhere back in the day
I was so addicted to this game both in the Arcade and the N64 and I was terrible at it. Will probably give it a go
A whole new version to be had at haha. Doesn’t make it any less fun!!
I also wonder if you have tried wipeout phantom edition? It is an amazing decompilation of the PS1 classic. It runs at 90fps on my OLED Deck and 240fps on my laptop, so beautiful and fun to play!
Also fantastic
This is so exciting! Literally thinking about trying to get mame working with San francisco rush to try and play with my pc steering wheel, and then this comes along!!! YAsssss!
Haha talk about timing
Wow and the hits just keep on coming nice work from the home dev community as always
My fav find recently for sure
I wondered if you were gonna cover this!
Good stuff
This is why people need to dm me stuff they think id like haha
Fingers crossed for multiplayer! Also, I believe the creator is working on 2049.
2049 would be a great addition
Indeed he is!
Thanks for covering this. I'm so glad to hear that it has wheel support. Any idea if it has LAN / system link support?
Dev said update after next has networking planned
Have fun finding those sound files you need everybody. I know I enjoyed looking for them sooo much...
I found them after 5 to 10 minutes of searching. Not too bad
@@GradyKallenbach Yeah it might be alright for people like us that know this stuff but someone new to all this who wants to give it a go hasn't got a hope in Hell of finding those 4 files.
I haven't delved into this yet but why not make it easier? you know since you have them now. The IA is a good place to put that kind of stuff and should be easy to find as long is named correctly and clearly.
Btw IA = "Internet Archive". Google or VGE seem to be blocking the name for whatever reason like it was a bad word or something.
They're packed into the mame romset sfrushrk zip file
I hope San Francisco Rush 2049 gets recompiled next.
I'd prefer Rush 2 before Rush 3
Me too
Why not all of them
@ Some day haha.
You will be able to play it really soon on Project R, it would be like two Rush arcade games in one!
I hope they try to recompile the Sega Model 1, 2 and 3 games.
I’m surprised nobody has attempted it yet
I want a Sin and Punishment Recompiled next!
Would def be fun
Uffff. Yes, yes and yes.
That's too funny. The whole video I was thinking "Man I hope someone makes a VR mod for this!" Great minds...
Haha I always want VR mods
@@VideoGameEsoterica Me too! And I don't even have a PC capable of running them, I just want them to exist! 😂
Have you checked out Arken Age (PC VR, PSVR 2)? It's supposed to be an awesome new VR game.
@GreyMatterShades no I haven’t yet. I’ll look it up
0:58 Thrill Drive: AM I A JOKE TO YOU!? XD
Haha you know I love Thrill Drive
This is good news beacuse the official PC version that came in midway arcade treasueres wasn't a real port, it was a recreation that felt nothing like the original game.
Yes it was not a good version at all. But this fixes it!
the PC version that was outside Midway arcade treasures was not very good either.
Oh man I would love for this to happen to the Thunder games.
Would be awesome
Sho happy there’s a focus if running this on Steam Deck too!
Steam deck support is an awesome benefit
This looks awesome!
That’s because it is haha
Sweet mother! Thank you!
That’s what I’m here for :)
Truly wicked stuff, 2049 was my jam but I'd love to see this team take a crack at The Grid, it's a real shame that one is presently lost to time due to Midway's weird proprietary inter-cab comms.
I have not played that in 10 forevers
@VideoGameEsoterica There are only two arcades in the States that I know run a multicab setup. Galloping Ghost and Boss Battle Games. It still holds up getting dunked on by strangers 30 years later 😂
I need to visit Galloping Ghost again soon
Drop your head in shame! Turn in your Rush badge!
.....I also didn't know about it.
Seriously I don’t think anybody knows. Til now
Oh my gosh, it's beautiful.
A perfect version of a perfect game
I am extremely picky with racing games and only play a select few. Ridge Racer Revolution, WipeOut XL, Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now and this are the only ones I ever care to play.
You need to add more to that list. So many good titles out there
You've got to try wipeout phantom edition. Improved handling, amazing graphics, custom soundtracks editable, etc etc Amazingly fun decompilation!
Certainly one of my favorites racing games.
Same. It just always hits. The hidden paths just hooked me in back in the day
@VideoGameEsoterica true. I do remember a very hidden path on the San Francisco bridge. If you succeeded jump well you can go straight ahead and find a huge hidden path. Unfortunately I never reach the other path because is very hard to reach it.
Awesome!! Which steering wheel are you using and would you recommend it?
I use the G920
no way NO WAY NO WAY I LOVE SAN FRAN RUSH NOW IT'S NATIVE ON WINDOWS OHHH MY GODDD HOLY SHITTTTTTTTTTTTTT YESSSSSSSSS
Haha go play it!
I was always disappointed that "The Rock" never made it onto the Dreamcast... Unlike Daytona 2 or Super GT, I have no doubt the little white beast could've handled it flawlessly.
2049 ran flawlessly on the Dreamcast this guy keeps on having freezes here, wtf.
Yes by that time they’d just moved onto 2049
@@VideoGameEsoterica I would've loved if they had included the original as a hidden feature, but I could see how that'd have been asking a lot. 😂
Aww snap I love this game, and with my wheel it's gonna be even better. At first I thought it was the N64 like most of the other decomps!
Nope. Arcade original :) which isn’t something you see every day
That was my favorite racing game back then and it wasnt just racing! More like a open world explorer game? Soooo many shortcuts and hidden keys to find, spend hours doing it with a friend. But I never beat, its way to hard.
It’s an absolute classic of the genre
Hope they can add split screen support
That would be legit
HA! yes! This runs on the Atari vcs! Very well! It works! 🤘🤘🤘
Haha good to know
Really? I never even heard of the Atari VCS!
@@tropixx_xlr1549 yea! Just look up on google atari vcs 800. I upgraded mine with 32gb of ram also. cool stuff
Oh man! I didn't know about this until day by you VGE. Wow!...I mean, wow!! 8^)
Seems like nobody knew about it!
Wow! I'm all over this!
Have fun with it :)
inb4 a PS Vita port
I’d play that
"Woah, back it up, back it up. Beep, beep, beep. Project R?"
Haha that’s how I felt
Can you please do a dedicated how can you get these running on a steam deck cuz the information's all over the place on the internet i get that you need to have the original ROM but then you need to have a program on the computer to recompile it for you or i keep forgetting
Maybe in the future I’ll do a guide
I found it pretty easy to get running on my Deck. The download page basically says what you need to know. The main thing is finding the audio files needed. That took me 5 to 10 minutes. It runs locked at 90fps on my OLED Deck and looks and plays amazingly well!
I guess I should mention I spent most of 2024 installing decomps and old modded PC games on my Deck, so I've got some experience. Also, I failed at a few of them, couldn't get a handful working.
@GradyKallenbach Yeah I've been busy playing PS2 emulators And game cube games on steam deck but these decompiles are definitely on the list of must play
This looks fun! I’m going to get it compiled on my PC then see how the Steam deck handles it. Starfox 64 recompiled did not work on the Steam Deck. Fingers crossed!
Star Fox should work. Others had it running
I compiled Starship on my laptop, made sure it worked (first time I set it up the first level was perfect, then other levels had no enemies or architecture in them), then copied it to my Deck. Then you just need to change the json file or whatever to say openGL. It's east to Google exactly what you need to type, and in which file. Then proton experimental runs it perfectly. It's locked at 90fps on OLED Deck and is such a blast to play!
Easy to Google (I had a typo)
@ thank you! I found and article and yes it was a simple edit of
That json file. Now it
Works!
Fantastic! It has Linux support!
Always a nice bonus
Will it have all lamp outputs and the FFB as the original San Francisco rom ?
Well I mean you’d have to hook up some lamps but…I have no idea 🤷🏻♂️
But who will mod it though?
The real rock from the rock
That’s Sean Connery
@@VideoGameEsoterica being Scottish myself I approve lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica but I got the quote from a public enemy song - black steel in the hour of chaos
Haha as you should
Ahh that I didn’t know
Doesn't look like the textures were upscaled or altered. I think, that's just an effect of 16x anisotropy?
I always loved the tracks in this game, however the physics were incomprehensible for me :( I think it would've been much better with Cruisn' series type of controls, or Beetle Adventure's ones or something like that. Or maybe that's just because it depends on the wheel being connected, I don't know. Are you playing with a wheel in the video? It seems you're having the same problems even though you're a fan.
SFRush for Nintendo 64 is just as uncontrollable. One time the car would go into slide, other times it wouldn't, while at the same time it's twitchy af. Going in a straight line is a challenge in itself :D
The physics make no real world sense but I love them in the game
I know it was a... uh... less than perfect... port, but i played the absolute shit out of and loved the N64 version of SF Rush.
Also you should try Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed, because it is actually in fact the greatest arcade racing game of all time. Don't be fooled by the first few tournaments, soon you'll be warping around the courses doing 50 ft jumps. There's some good patches to get it stable and widescreen on modern systems.
Oh I did too back in the day and I still loved it for not being a great port
I'm surprised you didn't mention the upgrade to the frame rate.
I think I did?
He did, he mentioned that the game runs at a buttery smooth 60 FPS
Just because you are biased towards SF Rush doesn't mean you are wrong!
Haha this is true
I got really good with 2049 on the Sega Dreamcast using the 500 CID engine with the normal Frame in a car that looked like a 300 ZX, this was in 2001/2002.
Why is that game laggin up on you in the video?
It doesn't lag at all on my Deck, locked at 90fps. So I think it's an artifact of uploading to youtube or something to do with the capture of the footage. This decomp runs like a champ!
YT upload artifact. It runs buttery smooth on my system
Yeah it’s just YT compression
this makes me want to buy a steering wheel and pedal
Great investment if you like racing games
Can this version be played with 2 players on split screen?
Not yet. Dev is working on network play now though
@@VideoGameEsoterica I hope they can make a cool 8 player multiplayer
@CanaldoUltimate me too
Oooo this sounds cool.
Rush 2 was a billion times cooler than 1 though .
I'm gonna go play it with my Logitech Wheel I think. haha
That was N64. So a wholly different recomp
@@VideoGameEsoterica Oh yeah, totally. I actually have never seen a real Rush cabinet. I've only experienced the games on the 64, Dreamcast, and via MAME. There's so much cool stuff happening with de/recomps and the like now too though. Man it's an exciting time.
It’s a fun new frontier in modernizing games and I hope we see a lot more of it in the future
If we had a PC port recompilation of rush 2, that would rock.
@@tropixx_xlr1549 There's that static recompilation thing. I guess we could use that to get one up and running.
How long until someone decompiles (or recompiles, big difference) Rush 2, 2049 and/or L.A. Rush?
Who needs LA Rush? Lol what a let down
Nice, got it instantly. I loved playing Rush on the N64 back then.
This is kinda brown compared^^
Is there a Way to choose the other Cars too?
You can choose all the car colors yes. Read the readme
@@VideoGameEsoterica No no, i mean the Bus, Beetle etc. :D
Sweet. I hope they do 2049 too.
I’d happily accept it!
I love the OG, but 2049 is my favorite
Both are classics
2024 hid this game from us!
I had no idea!
There used to be an arcade/console racing game forum. But no more
A Christmas bonus I only found out about in January
I hope this makes it to Android some day.
Not sure on that but hopefully
Is this compatible with the Dual Shock 4 controller?
If it works with windows it should work here
Yeah give us all 3 cruisn’s pretty please..
Would def be fun
Can I play it on an xbox series x..?
Not that I’m aware of
I hope this is not the same SF Rush as the N64 ver. That game was aweful!
No it’s the arcade version
Holy shit
My thoughts exactly
🎉🎉🎉
My sentiments exactly
I’m wondering if this will run on the Atari vcs 800 with 32 gigs on ram. Running windows 10. Hmmmmm
Ooh dunno. Test it!
I just tried it on my vcs (not upgraded) and it ran pretty well.
I Hope someday this can be done with mortal kombat or Daytona USA 2 or hell Virtua fighter 3, and if possible PLEASE Virtua racing and Virtua fighter 2. Maybe asteroids just for fun Lmao.
I’m sure you will see more in the future. It’s becoming a thing
Unlike sega's racers or namco's ones - this game didn't age well at all.
Whaaaat? It’s a stone cold classic
@@VideoGameEsoterica Even back in the day i only chose the extreme car simply because it was the only model which looked similar to a car, others looks like plywood boxes on wheels.
Haha the extreme was so hard to control
this game is not good
Couldn’t disagree more but everyone gets their opinion here
Good catch on this one 🫡
It tried to sneak by me!
This is awesome can they make the tracks backward playable
Should be in there already
not available, only in mirrored. But it is possible the dev will add it in.
I sent you a message on discord (different username, i cant share it here) last year and around a few weeks ago, but no reply. so you should adjust your settings.
Ahh yes it must get trapped. It’s hard. If I let ANYONE DM me then suddenly it becomes a disaster these days
So how can I send hardware to you directly? for example a pachinko machine for dumping.
Let me look into my pending
