That lady right there is Floor Jansen, vocalist of Nightwish and one of the greatest singers alive today. The Queen of Metal herself, give Nightwish a listen and start with Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013. In btw, the music is the Nightwish arrangement.

Henk Poort WAS the Phantom in the Dutch version of PotO. He was Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite phantom. He had never done distortion prior to this show, and only did it for Floor's benefit as she sings for a metal band, Nightwish.

come on, Andrew Lloyd Webber said that to every Phantom hahaha Just kidding, Henk is amazing, the distorcion he did is out of this world and his version of "the sound of silence" is in my playlist :)

Since she is the lead singer in a metal band, Henk did the distortion as kind of an ode to her.

And also, he's been her idol since she was a young girl and saw him performing in opera. I love the chemistry between them in this performance. Their body language, facial expressions, gesticulation, it's all so beautiful. Not to mention their voices.

A little explanation about the show "Beste Zangers": It is not a competition. Every year the TV station invites 7 professional singers from the Netherlands with different musical backgrounds to sing to each other. In every episode one of the singers is in the spotlight while the other six perform songs that person wrote or performed during her/his career or has a special meaning to her/him (like songs that this persons family played at home, songs about an impactful event in their life, songs that started the career of this person or simply a favourite song). They all create a list of those songs and the other singers choose one which they then prepare with the fantastic band and perform in that persons episode putting the performers own twist/style to it.

Weird seeing someone who doesn't know who Floor Jansen is reacting to this.
Henk was the main Dutch Phantom back in the day. Floor is a singer for the Symphonic metal band Nightwish. They did this song with their previous singer.
You should check out Ghost Love Score from Waken by Nightwish. It lets you in to some of what Floor can do.
The gravel was a nod to Floor being in a Metal band. Henk (an opera singer unfamiliar with gravel) sung Sound of Silence for her with gravel in a previous Beste Zangers episode.

I totaally agree! If you call yourself a producer and think you know everything about music, you should at least heard of Floor Jansen. I get the feeling Fj and HP are being treated like good willing amateurs. But not a lot of singers today can do a D6 flawlessly and hold on to it for 8 seconds. Floor is in no way an amateur nor is Henk. People don't have to like the music, but they deserve much more respect than this. Fortunately 99.9% of voacl coaches and producers do know how to appreciate this.

This was the last song of the 2019 season of the TV show Beste Zangers - Netherlands. You had the pleasure of watching Floor Jansen, the Dutch singer of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, "dueling" with Henk Poort, a well-known opera singer and actor from the Netherlands. It would be interesting for us to hear your opinion about the vocal performances of our metal queen Floor, both in Beste Zangers and with her band, Nightwish. Hint: choose the "live" interpretations whenever you have the opportunity :)
On the other hand, it was a great pleasure to see you again, considering that I admired many of your performances with Home Free. All the best, from RO.

Tx for the reaction, this version is extreme popular on youtube, not because its to be compared with the top musical artists but because its performed by the most versatile best female singer on the planet. Symphonic metal is her base but in every genre from opera, pop , heavy metal , folk , growling, ballads, hard rock etc. She shines, switching from breast to mixed to head voice within seconds with the most beautiful sound. You really should listen to her band Nightwish starting with Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 official live version where she shows how versatile she is. The by far most reacted song (included voice coaches) on youtube. You will be blown away i promise you.

Floor Jansen sings in a metal band (Nightwish) and so is no stranger to distortion. She taught Henk how to use distortion, so he used it here. The arrangement is from the Nightwish version of the Phantom, so that's why it sounds different to those who are familiar with the musical.

This was a kind a version of "phanton of the opera" from Nighstwish in the DVD "the end of an era" (sang by Marco and Tarjia there) but is really good to see someone with no back history from the singers (Floor is a metal queen, Henk was the Phantom in the Netherlands and never did distorcions to his voice) reacting to their performance.

  • @Idefixu
    @Idefixu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

This version is based on Nightwish's version of the Phantom (2005). Matter of taste but I like the Nightwish version better. Henk is a great singer but he is out of his comfort zone here. He can not match the rock sound of Marko Hietala, the bassist and male vocalist of Nightwish.
Another reactionist, opera singer Elizabeth Zaroff, who herself has performed in Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall, wanted to listen to Phantom by Nightwish to hear the original female vocalist of Nightwish, Tarja Turunen with her operatic style. Elizabeth loved Tarja's strong voice but was blown away by Marko's vocals. He stole the show!
Please react to the Nightwish version to see if you agree or disagree with me and Elizabeth!
If you are done with Phantom for now, at least react to Nightwish, "Ghost Love Score", Wacken 2013 to hear Floor Jansen at her best. She is sooo versatile and she can show that in one song GLS, and the band is fantastic. The genre is called Symphonic Metal!
    Greetings from Helsinki Finland!
    Stay safe!

Floor is phenomenal. This is really the tip of the iceberg with her, but you have to go back to the original for the rocked up vibe to make sense. They dimmed it quite a bit for the Netherlands cause like the U.S. , they don't do a lot of metal in the main stream. The original Nightwish version of it would be worth a reaction, but if not at least a listen. Just a tip if you do Ghost Love Score: Don't stop after around 8 minutes 10 seconds. You'll probably have covered most of the technical stuff by then anyways. I think you'll understand once you hear it. If you don't want to critique such a long song, they have typical length songs. Romanticide from Wacken would be a good one, kind of gives you their typical metal sound. Quite the diverse genre when you get into it though, especially with the first 2 singers being vastly different. Now, due to them being highly emotional you may attract very emotional people, but you've met me, so you're somewhat more prepared than others lol. XOXO thanks for a great reaction.

I think that in this case, you should've done your homework on who these two singers are a little bit better.
Floor is the singer for the Symphonic Metal band Nightwish (the biggest Symphonic metal band in the world)
And Henk IS the Phantom, he played the Phantom for over an decade in both British and Dutch productions of "The Phantom of the Opera"
Henk also happens to be one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite Phantom's
The band Nightwish has its own version of this song, its a lot heavier but was written for the first singer of the band, and since she left the band, they never performed it again.
That is why this version is a mix of rock and classical, both of them took a page out of the book of the other, and went to work on it with that point of view.
This was the second time in Henk's life that he used the distortion technique in a song, as you likely will know, distortion is a big NO! in musical theater, Operetta and Opera, he did that for Floor.
Floor in turn, kept as close as possible to the role of Christine as intended in the original Webber production, giving Henk the "metal groove" for the change-up.
Also that last note was a D6, and that isnt whistle registry just yet, leans to it but isnt it. (btw she CAN reach the original E6 too, which is whistle registry, but she choose the D6 as that has more body and can be held a lot longer.)
I'm not saying any of this as a critique as such, but i am telling this because you most likely would have gone into the song differently, if you had known who you were dealing with.
Otherwise, your reaction seems honest from your point of view, and i do get that reactors like to dive in blind most of the time... but sometimes.. you need context before you see or hear something for the first time, to assure you go in with some understanding of what is going on and most importantly... why it is as it is.

    • @ChrisRuppOfficial

    • @j0hnn13K
      @j0hnn13K 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@ChrisRuppOfficial yeah i know, that balance is tricky i'd say. I'd guess that the moment a musician gets suggested who isnt familiar to the reactor, that the wiki pages might have to be visited. As an simple example, if this was ... heck i dont know, Britney Spears and Elton John (to make a ridiculous example) research wouldnt be needed, you know what to expect from either singer. Either way, like i said, i wasnt trying to critique, rather i was trying to give the background to this and why it was the way it was (or is) :)

You have just reacted to the greatest female singer on the planet, FLOOR JANSEN the 6'1" "Flying Dutchwoman". Before you say "It's just okay" you need to look at the number of reaction videos posted not just of her but of her band NIGHTWISH, and speaking of NIGHTWISH, it is symphonic metal band from Finland who have been in the business since 1996, and have playd for millions of people around the world, on just about every continent, and every venue from small 500 capacity to Wembley, and they sell out 99% of their shows, that was until Floor joined in 2012 now it's 100% of thir shows and years in advance. Their music is not written it is composed, by their keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, who has benn compared to "The Modern day Mozart", their shows are not just shows they are a life experience that reaches all your senses, you leave wanting more, and no they don't do any country music. As others have said check out their video "Ghost Love Score" from Wacken 2013 or any other song from that show or live from Wembley. You will heat no only Floor in all her glory but the rest of the band., So do ssome research and then react, know who you are reacting too. Your volume is a bit loud on this particular critique, compared to the video you are watching. Just something to keep in mind. Just add water op up drum kit pop up got a laugh. TOTALLY agree with your "growly" reaction, your and mine would have looked choreographed. LOL Are you sure you got the order right on the teaching and psychologically manipulating comment. ;-) You did get quieter after you took the headphones off, which also seems to be (if unintended) headphone SOP. What's really funny is watching people trying to sing in headphones when their voices aren't being fed back, and they are singing too quietly to hear themselves. Even if they know exactly what they are doing, it sometimes gets comical...your pitch (singing loudly, I'll grant you) was dead on, to my ear. Impressive, 'young padawan'. Were you doing some beat boxing there?? What does Adam have to say about that, being like probably, one of the best in the world at it, and all? ;-)

Interesting...personally, I think I would have appreciated it more with just the audio, mostly because to me, these two didn't "suit," visually. I think the impressionistic touch was a little over the top, but that's probably the purist in me. I did think the soprano certainly held her own and did a tremendous job carrying the final notes.
    .
You did a great job of critiquing their performance, I think. I'd be interested to hear what you think of this version, by Sarah Brightman and Antonio Banderas: th-cam.com/video/j9qLfyLowjg/w-d-xo.html .

The woman singer is Floor Jansen. She is the vocalist for the metal group Nightwish. She is not an opera singer. She altered the song to a more metal format. He is actually the main opera singer in Netherlands for Phantom of the Opera. The show is more about having fun singing. It is not a formal format.

@@cooperc4060 That's even more interesting, because I quite liked her voice, and really thought the man didn't match up well with her quality. I suppose that's because he's not done metal before.

@@GrandmasGoneGamingLW I think she actually taught him how to do distortion in his voice the week before they sang this on TV. Being an opera singer as he is using distortion is a no no. Since he is the Phantom in Netherlands she asked if he would duet with her for the song and in return he said yes only if he could sing this song with her again at a Nighwish concert. Honestly search "Waken 2013 nightwish ghost love score" and listen to one of their songs. You can see her at her normal job plus this song is tamed down some. I think you might be surprised even though you may not like metal. There is a lot of orchestra in it as well. I have luckily seen her sing live before and it was insane. Let me know if you do listen to it what you think.

@@GrandmasGoneGamingLW I liked your comment, you seem interested in her. Do you want to hear the "soprano" on her daily job ? Well, she IS a soprano, but also a metal-beast and incredilble in powerful belting even highest notes, mixing in head voice just the amount she needs.
