Modified BMW E30 Coupe 2.7L Stroker Motor - (One Take)

  • 17-year old Ryan bought this BMW 325e for $50, which we think is a hell of a deal for ANY running car. Along with his dad, he's slowly building it up with a 2.7L stroker engine, new head, exhaust, suspension, wheel, and tire modifications. We love seeing young people appreciate the classics, and Ryan's keeping the spirit alive with his daily driven E30 Coupe

    C'mon guys give the kid a break - he's the owner of a BMW at 17, with a car he's built over time with his dad. Mad props from me! That's what the scene is all about!

    That I6 is definitely something else. It's not the fastest motor BMW engineered, but it's one of the smoothest. The only thing that really blows about the M20 is the timing belt, but it's a great platform for modification and can handle a lot of power when done right. That, and this is from the era of BMW where parts could just mix and match and everything would work well. You can swap over an M30 AFM or a Z3 or E46 steering rack with little hassle.

    In South Africa we never got the E30 M3 so BMW SA made their own with the 2.7 M20 engine in the form of the 325iS. Made between 194-208bhp. Fantastic car, fantastic sound much like the one in this video and it has quite a cult status among the locals for it's speed and handling.

    your guys' best bet would be to mic up matt and his guest, level out the volume between the two and then mix the cabin audio in, making sure you can still hear the talking. SOme of these cars, namely this one, are ungodly loud and the resonation is terrible

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  8 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      +Fernde09 That's what we're doing. Each of us is wearing a lav, and the levels are balanced between us. The car is so loud though, that there was nothing we could do.

      +TheSmokingTire Have you tried knocking down the sub 100hz frequencies in the mix, that would help a lot with the audio, it's the bass drone that kills the vocal track, I turned off my subwoofer that handles everything below 100hz and it was much clearer.

    Hats off to Ryan and his dad for keeping this car alive. At 17 yrs old your story reminds me a lot about my teenage years and first car. My first car was a 1976 Fiat Spyder. It was a beauty, but as reliable as a wet paper bag ;^( My dad and I worked on it every weekend. It was a great bonding experience and I learned so much about cars which turned in to a passion for cars. I can already tell Ryan is a "car guy" with many years of fixin' cars ahead cause sometimes you just got the bug and can't leave well enough alone. ;^)

  • @imSchwaggy
    @imSchwaggy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    he should BOOST it dude ! Trust me. s50 swaps dont really make sense unless you're gonna boost them, they only make like 220-240hp. since his engine's basically built, he can throw a turbo on there and make an easy 280. + it would be A LOT lighter than the s50 .

    • @carbonemtree
      @carbonemtree 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      his engine is not built its mofe like assembled, he has stock 25+ year internals..consider that the engine design and computer are very old so in order to achieve any power safely and reliably is to fork up the cash for aftermarket ecu which is as much as the s5x engines. I wont get into powerbands and driver feels of turbo vs N/A with this type of car. also traction is an issue with these cars under power, rear trailing armlife.. you dont need big power with these cars. 250-300 is more then enough. cheers

    • @imSchwaggy
      @imSchwaggy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zombiecheef true. I wouldn't suggest more than 300 to the wheels with these lol. they're stupid light. but built in the sense that he has heads cams mad injectors etc. I'm sure they did studs n stuff, so I mean it would be fun to boost and keep light weight.
      I personally can't wait for my e30. most likely gonna put an m50/52 in there though

      ***** Care to elloborate?
      I wasn't bashing his car I love the E30 and like that he has done some tasteful mods, was just pointing out like he did in the video that the car is very loud. Since it is not got a high output (in terms of WHP) there is no real reason for it to be loud other than the kid wanted a loud exhaust, nothing wrong with that at 16-17 I did the same thing then quickly realised it only really appeals to young girls and everybody else thinks your an asshole.
      A fart pipe/cannon/can whatever you want to call it is a bit of a ricer thing and its a little sad to see it on an E30.

    Dude, this car is really really like well modified. I have a friend he is all about speed, I’m like speed means nothing it’s the way how the car is balance, drive, and handles. Speed can go so far but getting a car that’s balance is a rare engineering feat. A lot of people are like that. Wanting speed

    Pretty slow, but for 50 dollars it's obviously a steal! Cool that him and his dad are building it. It does have a ton of potential and it looks awesome! He should do brakes next imo. Does he have an instagram/facebook so we can follow the build?

    • @mvpatrone
      @mvpatrone 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Might be slow in a straight line, but a good driver can put these around a track faster than your avg track day driver. Also these cars don't need upgraded brakes. Stock holds up just fine and is what the SpecE30 race cars use.

    Why doesn't anybody upgrade their brakes?!

    • @trbsu
      @trbsu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +daniel0663 Understandable, but I imagine you could at least improve the rotors and pads from stock which is all you really need on a 2500lb car. It's a common theme in the one-take videos I've seen, most people add power and leave their brakes stock.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  8 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      +trbsu most people don't go to track days, most people don't even really drive the canyons that much. My quick drives in many of these cars is the hardest they are ever driven. Following that knowledge, these owners never even push their stock brakes to the limits, and will get more pleasure out of 50 extra HP than they would from bigger brakes.

    • @trbsu
      @trbsu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +TheSmokingTire Fair enough, since it sounds like most of the one takes are DDs that see occasional spirited driving. I ask since my personal mods list usually begins with brakes and ends with power, but I guess I'm a bit strange. Although, spending money and adding power to a DD that's rarely driven hard seems strange too.

    • @ItsJoshN
      @ItsJoshN 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The latest issue of super street went over this. Like Matt said, most people want an extra 50-100hp when compared to spending money on brakes. Nice pads and vented rotors are
      All most ppl want

    • @chrisdontworryaboutit8998
      @chrisdontworryaboutit8998 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +trbsu Whether you have 100hp or 500hp, it takes the same amount of braking to stop from whatever speed. Most of the cars on this show are just modified to satisfy some addiction and not for tracking. Tires are a better place to spend money for better braking than the brakes for most uses. Unless you are running up and down public mountain roads at 10/10ths (which would make you a moron) Anything more than upgrading the pads and fluid is a waste for street driven cars.

    The only audio complaint I've ever had is the volume of it. It's usually pretty clear considering what's going on in the videos. It's kinda hard to get clear audio in car that's not stock. But no matter, I always love the videos.

    Way back when, BMW made the 325e & 325es with stroked M20 engines. They were for economy, low rpm, higher torque engines for general driving.

      +detaart +Matt Close No, duh. Regardless, I would expect to see at least a moderate improvement in basic audio quality/recording equipment. It's been months of apologizing for poor audio quality. But on a side note; I strongly advise against paying for +Drive +. They haven't released a video in forever. $4/mon. is a waist of money. I regret subscribing to that.

    If they slap on a turbo it is probably going to sound a bit tamer, but if they pick a turbo for top speed it'll loose the nimble feeling when they pull out of corners at low revs.

    Right on the smallness. Cars have gotten so huge! Park an E30 next to anything new and they are dwarfed. I have an old Alfa GTV6 and it's the same thing. Park by the most compact economy cars today and they are so much larger.

    We race an e30 in ChumpCar... Stock M20B25 with a 4.10 diff @ 2300lbs with 1/2 tank of fuel. It is definitely the "right" car for the job :) We went the very quiet route on the exhaust. As an aside, our completely stock engine made 142whp. Right in the realm of spec e30 legality. I thought the 2.7 "i" franken-motor made a bit more power than stated? Awesome car!

      +Patrick Carta That depends which norm are they using wheels horse power or crank horse power Some of them were restricted, cause of California emission limits, but with this mods He has about 200HP. He has 150HP @WHEELS.

      +Patrick Carta
      The 325e uses the low-revving "eta" engine which was built for "efficiency". Only 120 something bhp @ about 4000rpm. It was available in both the US and Europe. You can put a regular 325i head on it and get a nice stroker with the low down torque of the "e" and the power of the "i".

    • @DocumentaryHub
      @DocumentaryHub 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Valentin Nadolu I never heard of the 325e models, I guess they never sold them here.

    • @Sve3t
      @Sve3t 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Patrick Carta E30's run at about 25% drivetrain loss so he would be running 200hp at the flywheel, add to that, the year of his car is a LOT lighter than the E30 M3 and he would be able to paste one in the straight line
