There are a handul of games that have been released throughout my life where I was super excited when they came out. Two of them are Mortal Kombat games, specifically Mortal Kombat II on the SNES and Mortal Kombat Trilogy on the original PlayStation. I never owned a Sega Genesis so the SNES version is what I had.
If you lived in the 80s and 90s, having arcade games on console was a huge deal. The Genesis and SNES didn't fully capture the arcade fidelity of graphics and sound but still were great ports. The Sega Saturn and PS1 were the beginning of near perfect arcade ports from what I remembered.
    Great video.

@@landusrigsby3776 Yeah I remember when the original MK3 released on PS1, very impressive though for me the Saturn port of UMK3 was special!
I agree it was fun in those days seeing how well devs could convert to the 16-bit consoles (SNES MK2 arguably the best example) but as you say the 32-bit systems really ramped up the quality, not just with the sprites and backgrounds but of course the CD quality audio. Good times!

It’s easy to discredit a game when looking at it in 20/20 hindsight. But when MK2 for the SNES was released, this version was perfect! We all fell in love with it, this was the greatest game ever released for a short period of time. All I ask is don’t forget, remember what you truly felt.

The SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis are both great ports, but with the sega System being 2 years older, i find that version to be more impressive, plays great, character sprites are actually very crisp and vibrant looking with plenty of animation, just a shame they couldn't fit all of the sound samples on the cart.

When Shao Khan says FATALITY, the arcade version has a bass chime that's missing from the SNES version. Also, the names not being in the health bar in the SNES version takes away from the background art. The controls could have been toastier too. The hit boxes also seem smaller.

With as many talented romhackers as there are out in that scene, I'm really surprised nobody has assembled a team and done the SNES port of the original Mortal Kombat justice. Just replace the blood color (and the flying droplets too that the SNES completely omits) remake a couple Fatalities to match the originals, replace the bodies in the pit bottom and make some minor tweaks to the controls and boom. Ya got ya some good old fashioned Mortal frikken Kombat!

I might have mentioned this in an earlier video, but my theory is that the reason why the actors weren't credited in the home versions of Mortal Kombat II was due to the legal issues between Midway and some of the actors at the time the ports were being developed. When MK3 went into production around the same time, only Richard Divizio (Kano, Kabal, Baraka), Anthony Marquez (Kung Lao), John Parrish (Jax), and to a lesser extent, Carlos Pesina (Raiden), were brought back from the previous game.

The PAL SNES version (OEM cartridge not a rom), has a bug in it from the factory. When you turn on the SNES and the game starts up, the music is scr€wed up (misses a channel). Than you have to push the reset button, and when the game starts, the music is how it supposed to be.
This always happens. So it's easy to test.

Exactly, It is a great version but not as perfect as I hear many say it is. The sound is a bit muffeled and Baraka missing the animation on the B,B,P attack bother me on this, also the forge Background is missing the layout from the Arcade.

  • @jascadet

It's funny, since I played this version of MK2 so much, I got used to the slight slow down in some cases and completely adapted. So when I would go and play the arcade, or eventually the PC version, it was actually more difficult to time things. You just have to adapt. I was playing the SNES and Genesis back and forth using an hdmi switch a few weeks ago, and I I felt like the SNES played better to me. It might have been the missing frames of animation on the Genesis, not sure what it was. I suppose it's what you get used to. One thing that bugged me a bit about the SNES version, and maybe you will mention this in this video, the sound effect of a characters yell after getting hurt will get cut off as move is happening to them. At times it will get cut off because of Shao Kahn's voice during one of those moves as well, like an upper cut or something. It's subtle, but noticeable. Sorry if I'm not explaining it well. I can't think of how to put it. Okay, back to your video now.

You make a good point about us getting used to the version we are playing, for instance when I was young and first got the Gameboy version of MK1 even with the horrific controls I was able to ultimately have a good time playing it and I got quite used to it. Obviously it was a different thing later on when I played them on different consoles, but bottom line we do get used to it. Thanks for the comment Jay 👊🏼

Funny that you mentioned your sister picking Male characters. I bet you everybody finds that normal & won't mention a thing to her.
As soon as a Male picks a female character in any game, they get questioned & people are annoyed with it, & some think they may be gay lol. Like come on lol. Always that doubled standard too.

, I was playing this version with you step by step it's kind of funny actually had everything synced up it was kind of cool the thing I don't like is when you get higher up on the ladder when you try to grab the opponent are you try to do a certain move they just snatch you and they throw you and you can't even get away with it they just grab you and you pretty get punked! Lol. But knowing the exploits like I do and I know you do it's a lot easier you can get away with pretty much what you need to get away with The computer always have some weird tricky thing to do it's crazy how hard they made it on the Super Nintendo really irritates the crap out of me but I love it it's my favorite version I will always stand by that it brings back!
