Thank you for all your informative videos. The way you document these moments in history is truly inspiring. It helps to memorialize those lost in these tragedies, which is really beautiful. Keep it up!
Odd phrase to use. Im sure you meant nothing by it, but "Atlantic fanatic"? People died terrible deaths that night. Its not a football or baseball team.
Indeed, 150 years. I wrote a song in tribute to the SS Atlantic. It’s called: “ Ballad Of The SS Atlantic”. It’s on my TH-cam channel- Joey Sanguine Songs💖✝️
Hey Bob , when I look at the pix I thought of Chalk, …lol not yourself the authority on the Atlantic, but as in blackboard chalk. Paper was Not cheap as it is now and looking at the old drawing I envision a blackboard and the quartermaster writing rescue coming, also, you know people wrote letters a lot more in it could be in there ink and a quill
Man I just learned about this ship sinking and how horrible an experience it must’ve been. All the women and children drowning like they did except that one boy is just horrible.
Hey Tom thanks again for this exciting story, I just got done reading your buddy Bob Chalk’s 2nd book, I couldn’t put it down. Wow, the rich always get away w it , Im so mad the way things went down with this story and it has so much to do with politics and religion, I think Bob mentioned that in one of your videos. Metcalfe “Ismay “ clearly was at fault, in fact a crewman said the guy was sleeping on watch, he refused to let the cabin boy give the captain hot chocolate and wake him, yet Metcaffe was given an elaborate funeral. Clearly all the men knew if tehy wanted to keep their job uou don’t throw the owners nephew under bus. The captain lost his captain lic for 3 years, quartermaster Brown loat his certificate for 3 months, yet the dumb dumb who ran the ship aground is hardly mentioned . The preacher who got there at 2 pm and saved 2 people got all the glory, most of the reward money and the real heroes hardly got recognized. In fact the fishermen who Saved 370 or so people were hardly mentioned. It must have been a ghastly sight 500 plus dead people .
The Captain shouldn't have been sanctioned. He did nothing wrong. If Metcalfe hadn't usurped the Captain's orders this event could have been avoided. Not to mention Metcalfe was a horrible navigator.
It's similar to the Empress of Ireland wreck. The difference between Titanic and Ireland or Atlantic is the pace everything happened I think. Titanic was a couple hours and not immediate listing in total darkness, but a lot of people agree the terror in these sinkings feels worse than Titanic. Hard to gauge if it actually was, fortunately we weren't there.
Theres no "worse" wrecks. All are terrible tragedies, with many people living the last minutes of their lives in terror. Lives lost in them isnt scored like a sporting event.
He absolutely was the reason for this tragedy. He was a horrible navigator, ignored the Captain's orders, and thought himself a big man. He was the owner's nephew. Once again nepotism causes harm...as it did in the Whitehouse.
This guy is a 5 STAR guide for this site. I mean, How informative can ya get? The Best!!
My great, great grandfather and uncle survived this wreck. My daughter and I are divers now and I would LOVE to dive this wreck!!!!
I dove the area there isn't much left.

@@Del-Canada 50 feet is relatively shallow. Humans can dive about 350 feet at the absolute maximum.

Wow. Nothing like a local historian! Brilliant video. Amazing story. Thanks
Thanks for covering this mostly unknown event, the event seemed to be tragic and somewhat preventable, I hope you’re safe - from isolation , uk

2:53 i remembered those waves during our fishing trip in peggys cove last year. it nearly capsize our boat but at least it was worth $100
Those waves at Peggy's Cove shouldn't be underestimated. I've gone on a few dates to there, and those waves reach the lighthouse sometimes!
Thank you for visiting the site and bringing such great info❤
Tomorrow will be Atlantic's Anniversary . Can't believe it's this close

Great video all around !!
Awesome. Loved this. Thank you!
That was really wonderful! Where did you find that guy? He knows a ton about the old lore of the wreck.
I like this guy's style
I know the area well. I met Bob Chaulk 35 years ago. Only a brief meeting at the Fleet Diving Unit I believe it was.
Absolutely fascinating. So much historu

are their any known photos of SS Atlantic
Prior to the wreckage, there are no known photos aside from one I have taken on board from the stern.

like the extra footage tom
Why would they sail that big of a ship thru that small channel..it just looks way to small
Does the wreck still exists today. ?
Not much left
wow
The question on everyone's mind: 9:41
Whats the golden rule of the rock?..don't hit it ?
SS Atlantic was worse than Titanic in a lot of ways. Frankly, there's a lot of ship sinkings that are worse than Titanic.
Depends what you classify as worse. % of lives on board? Number of lives lost?
That's a pretty idiotic statement.
MV Wilhelm Gustloff, she was carrying about 10,000 people, the sinking claimed 9,000 lives
It's similar to the Empress of Ireland wreck. The difference between Titanic and Ireland or Atlantic is the pace everything happened I think. 600th like!
Before Titanic there was the Atlantic. It never should've happened. Reckon the loss of life & cargoes cost White Star plenty.
Well..history does say...they struck....and kept going......full steam.....so...
Ausgetzeugnet!
Metcalf was at fault prob too young to be in charge of a ship this size and too much of an ego
