- “King Hagler” was the leader of the Catawba Indian Nation. He had a reputation as peacekeeper with other tribes and colonists. In 1751, Hagler signed a treaty with the Six Nations. In 1756, Catawba Indians fought alongside George Washington during the French and Indian War. King Hagler signed the Treaty of Pine Tree Hill in 1760, which provided a reservation for the Catawba.

King Hagler's descendants have not only been great warriors, they have been pioneers in education and medicine as well.
King Hagler did not have any sons. A daughter, Jarmin Hagler, married Johnathon Barrett, and from that line descended to include Randolph DeSpain who was killed in the Goliad Texas Massacre. It was his sister Esther who married Joseph Addison Clark who along with his sons
Addison and Randolph founded the college that became Texas Christian University. Both Addison and Randolph defended the state of Texas by joining the 16th Texas Dismounted Calvary. Randolph Lee Clark founded two Junior Colleges. His son Randolph Lee Clark Jr. became the first permanent Director and President of M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX. It was he who set the high standards for that institution. Among Randolph Lee Clark's grandchildren who served in the military were Paul J. Pond, Jr. who flew from England a completely black B-24 toward the end of WWII,. His task was to interfere with the radar and radio signals of the German Army. The bomber was unarmed. Paul was also the architect who designed the M. D. Anderson Hospital. Randolph "Randy" Lee Clark Flew the F100 out of England during the time that I was stationed In France 1963-1965 as a dental assistant and dental technician. My duty station was at Camp des Loges assisting Maj. Bill B Lefler whose patients later included Mami Eisenhower. (Dr. Lefler retired with the rank of Maj. Gen. and was the head of the Dental Corps.) Headquarters was the 196th Station Hospital located at the Paris/American Hospital in a suburb of Paris. In the early 1930's Drs. Randolph Lee Clark, Jr. and Bertha Davis Clark continued their education there before going to the Mayo Clinic where Dr. Bertha Davis Clark was the first woman on the staff, and Dr. Randolph Lee Clark was a Fellow in Residency of Surgery. It was also there where my son, John "Steven" Henthorne was born.
More can be found in the book, Thank God We Made it written by the son of Addison Clark, Joseph Lynn Clark who was asked by the Texas legislature to form a committee on race relations in 1920.. Dr. Clark taught race relations and history at the Tarlton campus of Texas State University.
@@johnhenthorne1588 Wow! Thank you for the incredible information. Turns out we are distant relatives, then. "Nopkehe" King Hagler is my 7x Great Grandfather (9 generations before me. Counting backwards gets confusing). His daughter Jarmin "Jar-fly" Hagler, had a daughter with husband Jonathan Barrett, Bathsheba, who married Samuel Oxford, my matrilineal family's name. I was unaware of the Henthorne line, so that will have to be added to the family tree we have when I expand it someday. Thanks for the book recommendation, I will look into it. Small world. 🙂
@@davidmurphy6884 The line is through the D'Spain then Clark (my mother). For information about the Clark family check out Joeseh Addison Clark. His grandson is my uncle Randolph Lee Clark Jr.

I have read that John Haigler/Haglar took the title of king because it was the way in which the Europeans identified their leaders. If this is not true, let me know.
@@beastshawnee4987 I was born in 1940. It was only about 15 yrs ago that I learned from a cousin, Ruth Fish, of my heritage. My connection to King Hagler is through his daughter, Jarmin. My generation is 10th from Jarmin. Any I formation that you can share with me about our family will be appreciated. I am on Facebook.
Isn't a chief the same as a king basically?
