In my neighborhood I'm the old single white guy . The neighbor's wife across the street thought it was her duty to make sure I don't starve to death . She worked for a Soul food restaurant (AWESOME cook) . One time she brought me 2 huge take out containers . Trust me , I finished 2 plates lol . There was some knockout BBQ meat in there . I later told her how good the cooking was including the BBQ . She said " Oh , you liked the ox tails ?" It took me a second to process the thought of what I had lol " Yes ma'am , those are awesome!" She passed a few years ago . Rest in Peace Miss Deborah

They absolutely set him up in that spades game. They fixed him up with a perfect 8-book hand while he was out just so they could scare him.
Next up is Mama T's fish fry, where Zach learns more about how things are done and commits at least one serious social felony in the process.

Im orignally from a small town in central Texas and when i was a teen and older we had get togethers for school fund raisers and the like and everyone came together over good Texas BBQ and all the fixins, it wasalways a good time, black white and hispanic and nobody was fighting, we all knew one another and grew up together, it was basically one big family. I miss my hometown, friends and those days. One of my best friends from that time was black, he became a deputy sheriff and i was an EMT for awhile. After i moved we lost touch as he moved as well to a larger city and i moved away from Texas. Im 66 years old now a woukd give anything to be able to go back home again. Loved your video 😊

I go to 2 different family reunions up in NC each year because my Mom is a Kennedy and her mom "Big Mama" is a Taylor. One of the first things you want to know when you get there and look at the 2 long tables of food is who made the 5 different pots of Collards cause 2 of my Aunts could not cook a tasty pot of collards with a gun to their head, so you need to know. This brought back memories and looking forward to next year. :)

I am a white man married to a black woman since 1980. I know all these stories. The difference is that I am a damn good spades player. I would not have gotten into that game. I would not have dropped dime on the bones. I would have used the one excuse you have. I can't ask credit and I didn't bring cash. This is a cash game, not a credit game. I had eaten the food before, as I also dated a black girl in high school. My date for junior prom was a black girls. So I had a little practice. I knew about the plates. I knew the potato salads, I knew all the traps,as I got them as a teenager, and my girlfriend coached me in advance. The one thing I did that they didn't expect was that I buttered my bread, then rolled my corn cob on the buttered bread. This is how Italians do corn on the cob. You stick those cob holders in, then roll the cob on the buttered bread, then eat the corn without ever getting messy from the butter. We also use either the bread or the bell of a spoon you twirl your spaghetti on the fork. Even so, I still make mistakes occasionally. It's practically impossible to get through without making at least one mistake.

Way back when, I was a Platoon Sergeant in the 101st Airborne. Well one of my soldiers invited me to a Family Cookout. I felt pretty honored of this invite so I went on down to his Family’s Farm. Just like this guy, I am the only white thing there!!! Again, I was grabbed by my soldiers Mama and put at the head of the table. This New England country bumpkin was never treated with such honor and respect as I was that day. To say that this was a humbling experience is a major understatement, all I heard all afternoon was how wonderful I treated my soldiers. I was dragged into the difference between Leadership and that other thing called Leadership. If you don’t understand the difference in what Real Leadership is, listen to one of your soldiers Father tell stories that his son tells of HIS PLATOON SERGEANT. Those day in, day out tales tell how much of an impact you have on your soldiers lives. We still talk at least once a month and I retired as a Sergeant Major in 1996. I Love each and everyone of those soldiers!!!!

I'm a 66 year old White man and we are serious about spades also when I was still in highschool we would start on Friday night and not stop until Sunday afternoon. Someone had to go blindniel or blind 200 every hand them were rules 😊 Tash, you just have to learn to watch what your partner is throwing out there and when! You know if they are trying to lose every trick and they throw a high heart they are sweating hearts. If your partner is trying to win every trick, they are throwing the lowest card they can to win the trick, If they lead with a high card they are telling you I've got that suit. It's really very easy to learn.

Honesty time. I've been to prison a few times. All dumb stuff. But anyway I play spades. I love it. I was one of the few white girls that was always sought after for Spades. My name would get yelled across the day room. Some how this made me the embassador to white people and the token white girl for the black girls. 😂 Had me going back and forth for questions or favors etc. It was funny.

My first game of spades I had 2 kings, 3 aces, and almost all my cards were clubs. I bid enough for people to get upset. I also grew up in a family of bigoted rednecks. Once at the local park where pavilions were set up for families to bring a picnic, I was embarrassed by my uncles remarks about the black family in the next group of tables. They obviously heard my family, but I still got up, walked over to their table, introduced myself and was invited to sit with them for the rest of my dinner.

I'm biracial and took my white best friend to my black family's Labor Day cookout a number of years ago. I have a couple Aunties that are fierce competitors when it comes to the bbq sauce and the peach cobbler. They couldn't wait to swarm around her. She likes to eat, so she didn't mind. When it comes to playing cards, my black fam plays Spades and they take that ish serious. My white fam plays Euchre. I'm from Michigan and from what I understand there's a lot of the country that has no idea what euchre is

I never played either until I was in the Army (I mostly played poker or gin). Spades was pretty common so it was easy to pick up, but needed extra help from a friend who was a Detroit native to show me how to play Euchre. I got good at both and had a lot of fun, but yes... at times those Spades games could get pretty heated. 😬

I didn't know anything about the culture or customs of the community and didn't want to do anything which would upset anyone. When I was in college, I had several black friends in our dorm, and I got addicted to playing not only Spades, but also Hearts. Prior to playing with them, I had no idea how to play, but it was, like I said, pretty addictive and fun. We never played for money or anything, but it WAS very competitive, and each player or team wanted to be able to say they were the winner.
