As a former addict I can say there is a very thin line that can be easily & unknowingly crossed that takes you from a functional recreational user to a disfunctional addict. I was a functional user for over a decade & few knew. Self control & impulse are different for different ppl.
Its such a thin line, if they legalized stuff like opium and cocaine it would kill off the cartels and since it would be very obtainable for the population it could be more controlled, safer, less stigmatized, and just overall better for society, less crime and more freedom. And with no more stigma itd be much easier to prevent or end addiction issues

Sure it will solve some problems like organized crime, but it will make other problems worse. Look at the places that have stopped policing drugs and addicts. San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver have all relaxed their laws and stopped arresting people. The homeless population is worse, there are more addicts everywhere. The rates of overdoses is higher. You think because the government supplies the heroin that people won’t still be overdosing? You think people won’t still have money problems and will rob and steal for it? lol. Heroin is not designed to be used recreationally without problems. There are writings that go all the way back to Ancient Greece and Rome that opium is better left alone because you will become a slave to it. Is everyone’s experience going back 2000 years wrong? I used to think like you until I was exposed to it and became an addict. I run into 20 year olds who thought cigarettes are more addictive and they’ve tried opiates a dozen times and didn’t get hooked. Then I see them years later and they’re addicts. Why is there so much evidence in one direction and very little in the other direction? Is it a conspiracy? lol. 😂
Same here I was cool with pills for over 20 years and then the govt decided to take them away and within 6 months I was using H and lost everything smh.

we are clearly not ready to have a real honest conversation about drugs because each valid point this professor is trying to make the media wants to ignore. We need to be honest about who really uses drugs, stop using it as a weapon to criminalize a certain minority group of people to use as a weapon against them, and be honest about how the drug companies may not be honest with the public about what is really in these drugs and how harmful they actually are.
I agree but leveling the criminal punishment for those who use drugs so that black people aren't disproportionately affected is not the same as saying it's ok to use heroin on a recreational basis. The war on drugs was unfair because blacks were punished more than whites but this man is also encouraging drug use. The two are not the same.
The only point he's making is that there are far more people injesting harmful drugs and alcohol causing accelerated death that we realize. Being a functioning alcoholic isn't any better than being a functioning heroine addict for the body, forget the societal stigma. And if all of this casual drug use and alcohol use is due to unchecked stress and lifestyle problems then this conversation isn't going to help anything anyway.
@@Lodeenie Your last point is so very well stated. I just think that I'll always view heroin as being more harmful to the body than alcohol. One shot of whiskey probably won't kill you but one shot of heroin might. Also, sharing needles if ones heroin use escalates to injecting can lead to some serious health issues that could also affect others, i.e, HIV/AIDS can come from needle sharing and that can be passed along to someone who doesn't drink or do drugs. You can't pass much of anything along from alcohol use.

I've been affected by the opioid epidemic personally and the biggest issue that heroin addicts face is the lack of supply of clean heroin. It's all stepped on and filled with deadly substitutes to make it last longer for the dealer. If it was fda regulated the deaths would go down.

Most noble workers use drugs because they have a stable life where they don't need to depend on them and can actually just enjoy them.
The issue is for the regular folks in middle and low class that buy from the streets and have ongoing issues day to day, then it's easy to fall in the trap.
It's only in the modern world where we have "banned" drugs, because people have used them since the start of mankind, from the greatest philosophers like Plato to almost all kings of the ancient world.

I get what he’s saying... he’s trying to save lives by filtering the drugs, not by taking people off of them. People are going to do drugs anyway, so he’s saying why not make the drugs safer.
Ironically enough, a lot of people are gonna end up LOSING their lives as a result of his irresponsible, reckless advocating of heroin use. I can see where he's coming from in regards to wanting drugs to be decriminalized, but the way he downplays the dangers of recreational substances and openly encourages it is just wrong and unethical. If someone does in fact, have their life ruined as a result of doing heroin after reading his book, this guy needs to acknowledge and own up to it.

The 1994 drug war bill moved money out of education, housing, jobs and healthcare into cops and prisons that money could be used to end poverty along with the tax money from sales. I’ve seen up close the effects of drugs people of all walks of lives. I had the unfortunate luck of working on the baby unit of the babies born addicted to drugs. I’ve also seen people from very privileged backgrounds selling their derrière for drugs in the most unsavory neighborhoods. I think I’ll pass on that. I prefer yoga, acupuncture, meditation to relax, it is a lot cheaper and doesn’t require more and more amounts to feel “good.” Also people are dying because they build up tolerance and need larger and larger amounts or harder drugs to feel “good”

People aren't dying because they are getting a higher tolerance, that doesn't make sense, people are dying because they don't know the amount they are putting in their body and end up putting way more than their tolerance can handle resulting in death. If people knew what and the amount they are putting in their body there wouldn't be any overdoses
And the effects of drugs you are talking about when it comes to people selling themselves isn't an effect of the drug itself, it's because drugs cost so much.

It's our modern world and the illegal market that has turned drugs into chaos.
If the pure form of drugs where available for those that want we would not have the issues we have and with all the money left over from ending the war on drugs we could actually develop a working rehabilitation for those that encounter issues because remember,
the reason he is using it without issues is because his life is in place. A person in poverty, with issues or other things might seek to the drug for escape and fall into the trap of self destruction.

Read the book. That's all there is to it. He is unquestionably one of the leading minds in the field and has science to back up his argument, not just the anecdotal evidence of his own experience. This is important for all Americans, all people, but especially people in demographics that have been disproportionately impacted by the "war on drugs" aka "War on Marginalized People".

Drugs are often an escape. If black people were to start using a hard core drug on a recreational basis, it would not help the black community. Most would become addicted and then the crime wave would start to support the habit. There is a reason that heroin is listed a hard core addictive narcotic. Honestly, I don't know for a fact that this man is not addicted. Do we know how much he's really using on a daily basis? Watch this space.

It’s less about biology and more about psychology in his theory. It’s truly fascinating. He asserts that the issues that cause addiction is less due to the drugs and more due to existing traumas and interpersonal challenges. Which due to that he urges that America get real on addressing the oppression that POC and poor people face. From his research in labs giving ppl copious amounts of drugs (safely) he noticed that ppl didn’t get addicted..
Addiction comes when a person’s normal life is such a challenge that the drugs are used as a continuous escape v a fun time. So how does America reduce addiction? Not get rid of drugs necessarily, but increase minimum wage, address systemic oppression, etc etc.
We also don't know if he is the exception. I don't know him. I don't know how often he's getting a fix throughout the day. The mouth can say anything but behavior don't lie. Who knows how much heroin he uses daily - or if he would ever be honest about it? Now that being said, perhaps he is the exception but we really have no way of confirming that as his words are not enough.

Sure but the point is people will never stop using drugs, they have since the start of mankind and will until the end.
What we do to make it easier for those that consume is make it possible for them to buy whatever they went from the lab and 100% pure instead of gambling with street product.
This way we can put money into real rehabilitation for people with issues and expand knowledge for future generations.

He went to the Air Force at 18 came home to visit saw what he thought was killing his community and decided to dedicate his life to solving the addiction problem then he discovered drugs are not addictive but the laws were made by Racist to harm black people. Illicit drug use is no more harmful than illicit food consumption, exercising or sexuality. All can be safe, when used correctly and in moderation. Vices become vices when we lose control of our use...
I agree with him, I know many drug users who don't look the part. Only use drugs a few times per month and lead productive and fulfilling lives. However, people who use drugs to self medicate cannot use in moderation and it ruins their lives. Unfortunately I fall into the latter category. Although I've never been arrested, never been homeless, have a masters degree and a career I have lost many opportunities and relationships due to my addictions. I'm in my late 30s and for some inexplicable reason look like I'm in my 20s despite myriad addictions going back to my teens. Once your a member of the club it's a lifelong struggle to get out.

Pretty much. Truth be told, a lot of academics that study these sort of "alternative lifestyles", are just looking for excuses to indulge in these sort of things. Sexologists for example (i.e. Lindsey Doe from Sexplanations), are more often than not, just slutty, easy women who want to have sex with a bunch of different men, but without having to be looked down upon the same way as a porn star or hooker. For all the Jordan Petersons and Stephen Hawkings that have come out of academia, we get twenty or so Carl Harts and Lindsey Does out there.

@@RyanMan767 But heroin is still objectively more dangerous than alcohol, given how much more often it leads directly to death. Yes, alcohol can lead to death in the hands of those who drive under the influence or who choose to partake in bar fights, but the chance of one dying purely from alcohol poisoning is far less likely than one dying from a heroin overdose. Alcohol in it of itself isn't nearly as bad, it's the behaviors and situations people find themselves getting into while drunk that causes most of the problems (which can be moderated by having someone sober around). Heroin causes far greater direct bodily harm, hence why it is the more dangerous drug by a mile. Alcohol may be bad, but heroin is worse.

They have been used since the start of mankind all throughout history from the Bible to the great philosophers, ancient rome to the aztecs. Santa Claus has it's origins from a drug, nearly all our history is based of drugs.
The reason it's bad now is because we have a black marker where UNpure products are sold, if everyone had what Dr Hart has being 100% pure straight from the lab drugs we would be ok and instead of wasting money on the war on drugs that just ruins life one million times more than the drugs we could develop an actual working rehabilitation system for those that encounter issues.

A loved one died of a overdose and I’m still sad about it. Not sure I can grasp his concept.
If your love one was getting drugs from a pharmacy under doctors supervision they would be alive is what he is telling you. When users get it from medical professionals it's safe and they get check ups and other help if they choose. When they are on the streets it's most dangerous. Saying no to drugs is like saying no to SEX not going to happen let's make it as safe as possible.🙏 Sorry about the loss of your love one.
I’m sorry for your loss. The best way to stop this from happening to others, is to regulate the industry and educate the public as much as possible. It’s better to educate people how to be safe, responsible and reasonable than to ask people to abstain.

Most of us are closet addicts to something. For me it was the caffeine in coffee. Now this may sound funny but when you don't get your caffeine dosage some of us do experience headaches, stomach aches, and vomiting if you don't get your fix. When I google caffeine this is what google had to say" Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant of methylxanthine class, it is the World's most widely consume psychoactive drug, unlike many other psychoactive substances, it is legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the World". I'm 43yrs old I use heroin, but I work and support my habit and I support my 13yr old son. I dont drink alcohol or smoke weed. Ive been with my missus 15yrs and she's never worked but I refuse to support her financially. Using heroin or oxy is my one vice

@@arsh0189there are a lot of people with alcoholism. they might be a functioning alcoholic and hold a job. but i would say without intervention, they have significantly lost their quality of life. they have reduced their involvement with people they love. and its all legal. they see their loved ones struggle and miss out on a relationship that they would like with that member. i would say that is like death. i would say that alcohol is just as dangerous as any other drug.

So am i understanding that we need to do drugs. Is this to get attention or is this real. Crime shot up because people would do almost anything to get their fix. The policing just exacerbated and already surmounting problem in the black community. I would refrain from underestimating the negative effects of heroin use especially in a community as fragile and injured as the black community.

Well, he’s certainly not lying. I myself have been using heroin, ever since 1994. I still go to work, Monday-Friday, wearing a suit and a tie. Nobody in my family knows at all, because I’m a functional drug user. People hate to hear the truth.

Drug usage is a dangerous activity to partake in. I have had a few men in my family to die from it. Just Sunday my 21 year old nephew died from it. I’m trying to hear his perspective but I don’t know about this.
People will use drugs anyway so why not make it safer? I do understand that point anyway. The war against drugs isn't working. It just puts more people behind bars. Also getting it from some crooked dealer means drugs might be tainted leading to more deaths.

I was on H for almost a decade. I was a “functioning” addict for half of that time. The other half I ruined my life and had to get clean.
One, you don’t know what’s in most of what you’re getting. One bad batch and that could be it. Second, sometimes you gotta go to rough places and unsafe situations to get it. Third, money. For the first 5 years my job made me enough money that allowed me to pay all my bills, and afford my habit. Half the company was laid off, and i found another job within a month but made less. Still managed to survive and use, just had to cut back. Then suppliers weren’t constant, had to pay extra for crappy shit. Had to drive real far to get it, sit and wait for the guy, interfering with daily life and work. Costing more and getting less. Where it once was 5 minutes from my house and I was in and out, was now an hour and a half round trip plus sitting and waiting for the plug to show up. One thing led to another, too many days called off, or come in late, not making enough, loose job, end up a mess. But yea, if there was a steady flow of non cut stuff and I didn’t have to do shady deals, wait hours on some guy, and it didn’t cut into my living expenses, I would never have quit. No reason to. Duh. But that’s not how the rug market works.

I definitely believe that most addicts die from contaminated drug usage. Nothing is pure and because of that I believe the addicts become addicted faster than expected and die faster from exposure to multiple contaminants. Still I would caution and prevent from being affected by these issues by avoiding drugs all together. Also one day it'll catch up with you and they'll show affects someday regardless if how pure something is.
I guess that epidermal most woman take to give birth is gonna show up at the end for all of us, the processed food, the air pollution, etc. Because in the end, we are all gonna die from something.
It’s true that cut in specific drugs might be toxin but it’s not gonna make you addicted faster and there probably not dying from acute poisoning from the drugs cut more so fentanyl in opioids or overdoses on any drug

It affects him more than he wants to admit. In fact, this entire cause that he has created probably has a lot to do with his son being incarcerated. If his son listens to his father, he'll be back in jail once he gets out. Clearly his son is not someone who can just use the drug on a recreational basis as his father is encouraging folks to do. His father seems to have a try it you'll like attitude but use it responsibly. That's a very hard thing to do with a hard core highly addictive drug.
We're in the process of normalizing everything that was once taboo. Black folks must stay vigilant and don't buy into this foolery. On the one hand race relations in the US has back paddled to the 1950s on the other hand this man talking about leveling the field regarding drug use. When drugs have historically decimated African American communities. There was a reason they were dropped in the black hoods. It was never expected for "white America" to get strung out.

My brother and I are on medical MJ here in FL both for legitimate reasons. I am on disability and am poor, but my brother (who helps take care of me) is in something like the top 6% in the US, not inheriting a dime from my father's death and with minimum help through college from my mother who is 77 and has about a total of $100k in property/savings. We both use about the equivalent of 2 to 3 grams of flower a day, mostly in concentrates. The dispensaries are having a price battle here, so you can get ounces of flower for $120-$150 and a gram of THC concentrate in a vape cartridge for $20

I've never once met a "recreational" heroin user and I guarantee I've been around 10 times more heroin users than this guy. Not to say they do not exist, but I would say, it is less than 5 percent of people who have done it more than a handful of times.

I’ve been a recreational heroin user for almost two decades, I’m opioid dependent, I do use methadone maintenance daily but not Heroin.

You have to read his books and see his lectures where he goes more in depth. It sounds absurd at first but once you actually hear what he is saying that's when you realize he did know what he was talking about
@@peacefuldays4255 I have and I still think he's a crock of shit. When you can afford it, it may seem like it's recreational. But, this dude is a full blown addict. He just makes enough money at the time being to cover up the dark side of addiction. I was able to do it as well for a time period and no one had a clue what was really going on. People always think they have it under control until they dont. There always comes a day, the purity changes, or even the complete chemical make-up changes. Now your 250 dollar a day habit costs 500 a day, because some jackass decided to cut the supply. Tolerance always goes up, so using once a day works at first. Then, 3 days later you have to use twice, so you're not waking up sick in the middle of the night. Next, you need to administer a lunch time fix to fend off the earlier and earlier on setting withdrawals. At this point, especially with todays product, you're using every hr or two just to starve off the withdrawals and really you're just using to physically make it through a day with out feeling like death. There's zero fun in it at this point and it puts you in the toughest battle you'll ever face and continue to face for the rest of you're life. This is the worst part of it being illegal, it's keeps it super expensive and quality is absolute shit if you aren't connected well. Say, I would relapse, I'd probably OD that first day on half a bag, but within a week my tolerance is climbing through the roof and I'm back to doing 20 plus bags a day, again. That's when I'm on fentanyl/tranq/dope. The shit is garbage and I hate the effect/high, but it does cure you sickness. It's cheap, but a hole different beast. Cheap being 150-200 dollars a day. But, when I'm doing primarily real H, I'm atleast a 3 gram a day habit just to be well. You're spending 300-500 a day for good product if you cant buy in absurd bulk. The high is more euphoric, stimulating, but not nearly as potent as fentanyl analogues which basically just puts you to sleep for an hr or 2 and you wake up withdrawaling, already. So, you usually stick to one or the other, because of tolerance difference. I'm already physically addicted after 3 days of consecutive use to the point my withdrawal is just as bad if I were using for, lets say, a year. Dopesick is dopesick, and I can tell the way he talks about heroin, he is in love and consumed by it. This is not a drug you can use the same amount at night everyday of the week and just leave it at that. You're doing it for the "high" and unfortunately it takes more every single time to get there and in increases exponentially. If you can afford a 500 a day habit, and keep you're life in complete control, I give you props. But, what happens when it's 1000 dollars a day? If you have the means to feed that beast forever, go for it, but I've never heard of anyone making it, let alone being happy through the process. I'd much rather spend my money on helping someone else these days than on a false sense of comfort and control that the artificial high really was.
