  • Thomas Jefferson, third president, philosopher, scientist, historian, and author of the Declaration of the Independence, helped establish the foundations of self-government and individual freedom we know today. Jefferson's words-the Declaration and his more than 19,000 letters-and his architecture-including Monticello and the University of Virginia- provide a lens for scholars and visitors today to view the beginnings of early America.

Thomas Jefferson has always been my favorite president. He insisted on having a bill of rights for Americans. He foresaw the dangers of big government and that is what we have today. One of the greatest human beings to ever have lived.

      The Marquis de Lafayette
did not visit Monticello until 1824, nearly fifty years after American Independence. It was George Washington with whom Lafayette was very close and it was at Mount Vernon and at General Washington headquarters that we find Lafayette offering vital assistance and support in the cause of American independence. Lafayette came to Virginia to defend the state but got little assistance from Jefferson who was then governor of Virginia. Lafayette rather generously withheld criticism of Jefferson wartime reputation but Baron von Steuben who had come to Virginian early in the war to oversee Virginia's defense was scathing in his judgment of Governor Jefferson's failure to take action and take a stand.

Thomas Jefferson was also a racist that believed in inherent inferiority in African-Americans.

Wow...you clearly are leaving out several important facts that show how uneducated you truly are. Jefferson was part of the group who put together The Northwest Ordinance which outlawed slavery. He also tried to make slavery illegal in Virginia. He was the President who ended the slave trade. His original draft of the Declaration called out the British for the evil institution of slavery being brought to the colonies, but it was taken out by the editing committee due to its extremism. He stated that slavery was like having the wolf by the ears, because he knew they needed to let it go, but they were afraid of what would happen. The man traded with his slaves, and there is plenty of documentation that shows he was respectful and caring. Seriously, where would they go, and what would they do if he got rid of them???
