So funny to see all of this getting attention again after all these years!!

One of my favourite things about this game was how your firepower increased every time you went across the bridge and defeated the mini - devil who shot pitchforks at you.
If you stacked 2 extra cannons on your ship ( or whatever it was ) you could get a nice semi - automatic effect and really blast those devils all to hell~!
Thanks for another great review of a classic Arcade game I remember from my youth, Patman~!

    • @RetroMMA

Semi-automatic means one firing per trigger squeeze, so that doesn't seem like an upgrade when stacking - should be full auto...

Hello! And, thank you for featuring Satan's Hollow. I am the artist that did all of the cabinet, control panel and header art for the game! Thank you for the kind words at the end of the video about my graphics from so very long ago! I have a myriad of tales to tell about Satan's Hollow, none of which were even touched on in this video. If you are interested in any of that, or how I came up with the graphics, or the crazy letters I got from Jim Bakker, Jerry Fawell, and Jimmy Swaggart threatening me with eternal damnation for having done the artwork that was leading folks to Satan!! LOL! Dude... I was a Lutheran at the time! LOL!!!
I remember my boss, Paul Farris coming to my desk and dropping those letters on it saying, "Well, you'vemade the big time, Paul! You have HATE MAIL!! LOL!!!
I look forward to hearing from you!

Hello, thank you for taking the time to comment. Your artwork is fantastic and I would love to hear any sort of crazy tales you have from that timeframe. That's the problem with some of these games from almost 40 years ago is that getting in touch with the people involved. I tried reaching out to Bill Adams but never heard back. If you would not rather publish these on a public forum you can email me at pdbowling71@gmail.com. Look forward to hearing back :-)

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I have no problem with a public format, and would actually prefer it! There are so many things that no one knows about except for people like me, who only got recognition at the time because I snuck my initials into the header!! I still have all of the original color comps and design sketches! I'm a pack rat, and when I saw that they just THREW THAT STUFF OUT, I nabbed it!! I have a FaceBook page, and if you'd like to PM me, I'd love to share with the fans!! I'd be honored and flattered!!

Hi Patman I just wanted to say many thanks for all your great videos, I only discovered your channel recently and have already watched almost all of them. In one you show real footage of you getting a strike in bowling and I was amazed by your skill and tenacity even though you have restricted mobility. It makes all of your arcade memories all the more poignant, I honestly would never have known without seeing that video of you, but it doesn't change how I feel about the content, it just makes me even more impressed. Fun Fact: This was the first game fledgling programmer Jeff Nauman ever worked on, (while I was cutting my teeth on Discs of Tron). Later we would team up and create games like Sarge, Rampage, Arch Rivals, Pigskin, Rampage World Tour, General Chaos and many, many more.

My parents had a table top version of this game in their pizza place for a while. I loved playing it! Got pretty good at it too.
It had one big pro about it and one big con:
Pro: could sit down while playing it.
Con: because of how table top games were made, the controls were usually on a ledge with the glass table top overhanging it. No way was there room for the nice control stick the stand up arcade cabinets had. So instead the control stick was pretty much like a joy stick you'd find on a Pac man machine, only there was also a dinky little firing button built into it too. It got the job done, it just felt like too puny of a control for this game.

@@TheTenthArt Yeah, I was privileged. Parents had a couple pizza places in the 70's to early 90's. Aunt and uncle had one too, they all had arcade games.
I remember being like 3 years old in 1978 and bringing a chair over to stand on to play Sea Wolf, a submarine game where you looked through the periscope. They had that and a pinball machine. They always had 2 machines at that place.
Sea Wolf got switched out for Asteroids which I fell in love with. Then the pinball machine got switched out for PacMan. Then Pac man was replaced by Ms. Pacman, then my dad told.the vending guy to leave Ms. Pac man there, it was.his favorite game.
So then just the one game got switched out about every 6 months. After Asteroids there was Joust, Turbo, Mach 3, Tapper, Kung-Fu Master, Shinobi, and Ajax.
At my parents other place we had the cocktail cabinets. At various times we had Galaga, Donkey Kong Jr., Super Pacman, Arkanoid, and Satan's Hollow. We also had a stand up arcade cabinet Star Trek game.
At my aunt and uncle's I remember I liked playing Elevator Action.

But when he appears on screen he's this little 6 pixel totally non threatening looking thing that's easy to take out in one shot? Your cannon and the backgrounds are more detailed than the Devil. I always found that amusing. They seemingly put little effort into it

Great video. I haven't thought about this game since for some 35ish years. Looks like it goes pretty crazy after a few rounds. I was wondering if you had any interest in doing a video on bagman, pack rat or black tiger? I believe you mentioned once your patreon subscribers often decide but i thought i would ask. Keep up the good work.

When I was a kid I used to play an apple II game similar to this: you were a helicopter pilot and had to construct a bridge, then a train would cross and then you had to land and make your way through a building to launch a missile of something.
I can't remember the title for the life of me.

Midway's games using that hardware were, in a way, ahead of their time, being fully 480 horizontal lines of resolution, which wouldn't really be seen by other arcade makers until well into the 3d phase. The extra detail was really important in games like Rampage. But on the other hand, they were limited to 30fps, which was also basically unique in the industry.

Apparently when named "Satan's Master" every arcade cabinet ordered included a free Sacrificial Virgin!
Unfortunately Bally Midway swiftly decided against the offer when they realised a lot of arcades at the time already contained plenty of sad, lonely virgins...
And yes, I'm an oldschool gamer, so I admit I too fell into the category. Especially as my acne made my face look like the surface of the moon after it had been repeatedly nuked!!

It has to do with why they were okay with putting Satan in the title anyway, most people want to go to his Hollow to shoot him, like in DooM.

It's imho a relatively mediocre shooter. It's nothing really special, but there is also nothing wrong with it. You surely won't want to play this for hrs without end, but once and again 30min here or there or in between is fun. You can get quite easily into it and the difficulty level is rather on the forgiving side. As it's a kind of somewhat known, but largely forgotten classic, I'd advise to play at it at least once.
