- In 1999 only 600 Grand Edition cars were built to commemorate the end of W140 production and were equipped with Premium Parchment leather, black Art Line wood trim, 18″ AMG Monoblock wheels, rear sunshades, illuminated door sills, and more. The 5.0-liter M119 V8 was rated at 315 horsepower with 347 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission. The exterior is finished in Obsidian Black (197), including the factory color-matched lower body cladding. Grand Edition cars were fitted with 18×8.5″ AMG Monoblock wheels. The car is equipped with self-leveling rear suspension and speed-sensitive power steering. The Grand Edition included Premium Parchment Leather with black Art Line wood trim, a wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel, and floor mats carrying the Grand Edition logo. Other equipment includes power side and rear window sunshades, a CD changer, and a car phone installed in the center armrest.

True, one of the most reliable s class ever. I also have 500sel ‘91 and ‘93 and ‘96 s280 which is a very comfy car for me although the fuel consumption is not that great

Phillip Velednitskiy That could be. I think a lot of automakers are going to team up to reduce costs on future cars though. You already see it with Toyota and BMW working together on the new Toyota Supra and BMW Z4. Also the new 10 speed automatic transmission developed with Ford and GM together.

My grandfather has a 1992 300se 3.2l, what a great car... extremely smooth and so comfortable! Some electronic failures has occurred, but no matter...the strange thing is that it doesn't accelerate, instead it "builds up" speed...

The W140 has long gears so it takes a while to get top power up in the RPMs

If you ever sell it, you will regret it forever, there getting harder to find, mine needs a good remodeling of wood is cracked, paint correction, tune up shocks

This model will never die
I bought the '99 CL 500, loved it so much , I decided to get a 97 S500. This car gets more attention than the w211 AMG I used to own. Biggest issues I have are suspension related things due to NY roads. Other than that, the car is very DIY friendly and is a true tank in all aspects. For those looking, try to get 1997+ and please please pleaseee get black interior. You can thank me later.

I have this S Class in S500 configuration,5 speed automatic and revised engine from 1996.In my opinion these cars are very good made and good looking,but not perfect as many think,they have some issues.Common issue is leaking oil of steering pump and rusting in some areas,frequently under plastic trim,around trunk button,that plastic trim.retains water.That trim was a mistake which coupe version has not have.Another problem is degradable wiring harness,but that was common problem with all 90's mercs.the best engine for this car is V8 500 M119.Stay away from V12,not reliable and expensive parts and too heavy front part of the car.Another V8 S420 also good but V8 500 is better for that car . Worth to mention is that these cars works best with OEM sparkplugs,Beru is best.I have tried NGK Iridium but the car worked bad.Keep OEM and it will work fine.Also use other OEM parts,the car is heavy....if you put cheap parts it will soon broke ( rubber joints ).
Lomferder parts are ok for this car.

US spec I suppose? not the highest spec even it was an Grand Edition... exp the original MB parking sensor ‘ Parktronic ‘ unseen... in my country @ Malaysia back in 1997... our S320L locally assemble was fitted with the same spec as the video pictured S500 with even extra like the Parktronic parking sensor also fitted... my parents still keep our beloved W140 S600L V12 built in 1996 all the way from Germany... ticked almost all options including individual rear electric seats and satelite navigation system... it cost about rm1.5 million, its like USD$360,000 of todays money

sorry to dissapoint but the rear shade is factory on all W140s as far as I know. And those rear window shades are aftermarket, sold by MB, AND ARE DEFINITELY NOT POWERED
In America they were an option on s320s, s420s and s500s the only ones that came standard were of course the 99 s500 grand edition and s600s
