Hi, I recently subscribed to your channel, and really love watching your videos,, you’re very professional in what you do. I just got my silhouette cameo 4 for Mother’s Day and without any knowledge where to start,, I discovered you...I what to do signs for my home and family so I would like to know more about how to make the designs,,, thank you for sharing your beautiful work
Hi! I’m so glad you found my channel😊 I have worked with silhouette a few times and like it. I create most of my designs in a program called Inkscape. I do have some tutorials on my channel on how to make some designs in Inkscape. I don’t have any on how to work with Silhouette yet but do plan on doing more design tutorial videos on Inkscape.👍🏻
I'm getting ready for one next month as well. I have never set up at a craft fair before. I'm really excited and super nervous!! I'm just not sure how to set things up or what supplies I'm going to need or how many of one thing I need to make. Omg Christy, just thought that would be an awesome tutorial!!
That is a great idea I will definitely get started on that one! I'm excited too I have been to a few and you always learn something from them about what you need to make and what people like. Tip: Take business cards even if it just a name and contact info . . and special order forms in case people want to have you make them something. . at least that what I so wish I had at my first one! I hope yours goes great!
Thank you so much for that tip!! I will definitely do that!! Oh awesome!! I can't wait for that video!! I told my husband I wish we lived closer so we could craft together lol
So glad I found your channel. Can you do a tutorial on how you paint the solid base of your boards. I have a terrible time with the side being like an orange peel in texture instead of smooth. Yours look perfect.
Hi! Mineral spirits cleans oil based stains and paints. We reuse and never throw anything away. You can keep mineral spirits in its container after you use it and can reuse the same spirits over and over. Also use the same rags over and over just store them in a container that isn’t flammable and away from flames or flammable materials.👍🏻
If yes you do not want to nail the hanger to the thin wood. I pick a spot that for as thru both the thin wood and the frame and nail a sawtooth hanger there. I use one for small signs and two for the longer signs.
Thanks Christie! You make it look so easy and i always have troubles lol. What kind of hardware do you attach to the back of your signs and how do you attach it? My signs are so thin that when i try to attach with screws or even a nail, it goes right thru the thin sign. Thank you!
Thank you!😊 I do use sawtooth hangers on the back, one for small signs and two for longer ones. I attach near the top making sure I am attaching to the frame and not the sign board only. Hope that makes sense!
Hi Cristy Cain, What kind of paint are you using for the board, specially the orange color. I usually use the chalk paint for all my board. but there is no lot of color choice in chalk paint. please advise. Thank you
Hi. Yes it can be hard to find a lot of chalk colors. The orange is Behr paint. I can’t remember the exact color you could start with Tiki Torch or Deep Fire colors.👍🏻
Thank you so very much!! Yes for the Amazing Grace I used "Gybella" script font and "Sitka Banner" serif font. On the "Give Thanks" and "Hello Autumn" I used Roseroot Cottage script font and Skinny Font. On "Home Sweet Home" I used Skinny font but kinder dragged it out wider, and a script font called "Michelles". I also used "Michelles" font on "Come In...Awesome" along with Roseroot Cottage Sans font. And for "Thankful" I used "Wildera" font. I have a blog post on my website theappalachianhome.com/ about a lot of these and where you can find them!
Hi thank you! I think I use Gybella font on Amazin Grace and times new Roman on how sweet the sound. I can't remember about the give thanks I'm sorry ... it might have been Wildera. You might find where I answered that question in the other comments for that video?
The measurements in the description box... are those the measurements AFTER you cut? If I go to Home Depot or Lowe’s, what size pieces of wood am I looking for?!
Hi. Yes those are the measurements of the finished signs. I measured the sign board (luan) and cut it at those dimensions, then cut my frames to match. So just buy a board at least the size of the finished sign and it will work fine. I usually buy luan board in sheets that are 4' x 8' and it is usually around $16-$17 per sheet. And the framing pieces are furring strips that are 8' long, usually around $1 each.
Do you always use your vinyl or do you ever use the vinyl as stencil and paint? My opinion is that all paint looks more professional, but I have a hard time with the sticky residue left behind (on chalk paint) when I pull the stencil up. I even tried using a spray sealer between the two colors and still does the same. I switched rolls thinking maybe it was old, but still done the same thing. Any suggestions?
Hi! I love using oracal 813 for stenciling. It doesn’t grip as hard as vinyl and have had no issues with residue. I get mine from Amazon but others has it also, like 651vinyl.com. Hope that helps!
@@AppalachianHomeCo ah, yes! Oracle 831! I should have thought of that! Thank you so much! They changed their website to 143vinyl.com and that’s where I got this Starcraft. They don’t sell any oracle anymore but I did notice they got a new type of removable vinyl. I’ll try that! Thanks so much!!
Christy, is there anyway to breakdown the measurements of the luan board and the measurement for the furring strips? I tried some signs but my measurements were off. Thank you.
Sure! I made the top and bottom frame pieces the same length as the sign board so the edges are flush with the sign board. The side frame pieces fit inside the top and bottom frame pieces. So if you’re sign board is 12” tall the side pieces will need to be 12” minus the thicknesses of the top and bottom furring strip. Most furring strips are about 3/4” (little less). So the side frame pieces I would make 12” minus 1-1/4” (3/4” + 3/4” = 1-1/4”). I hope that makes sense! I’ll try and post some plans on my website theappalachianhome.com.
@@AppalachianHomeCo Yes Christy that makes sense... That's why I love your channel you answer peoples questions.. Good for you keep up the great work!!
What size board are you using for the back?? I've seen videos of people using 1x6 and I just think that's so heavy. I like that yours are nice and thin.
Hi! I use luan board for the sign back... I usually get it from Lowe’s. And for the frames I use 1x2’s either from Lowes or local lumber store. This does make the signs really light which I like. 👍🏻
@@AppalachianHomeCo Awesome! With your bigger signs they are the pine 1x6,1x8 & 1x10xwhatever length to make the backs? I’m sorry I wasn’t being specific.
Hi. No, I don't notice the staples and don't mind them but you can try gluing the corners or put in corner v-nails or just nails if you don't like the look of staples. If you are using a nail gun and air compressor I find the staples and nails usually inset a little anyway and are hardly noticeable.
Hello hope you can help, I'm trying to make some signs for an event and have been struggling with it soooo much. The nails for the nail fin are 1" and when we nail the back the nails are coming out through the top, any suggestions?
Hi. If the nails are too long and the points are coming thru then you will need to check and see if your finish nailer will take shorter nails, say 3/4". If the nails are coming out at an angle on the side then check to make sure you are holding the finish nail gun completely level in all directions. Even a slight angle backwards, or left or right will cause nails to some thru like that. Let me know if that helps!
Hi! Yes now I usually cut them at home with a table saw .. I think I have some clips of that in other videos. But I have asked Lowe's to cut boards for me and they did. I saw a sign at Lowe's the other day that said Lowe's would now be charging for cuts but I haven't been charged for that in the past, just FYI!
