F-14 Explodes During Supersonic Flyby

  • On September 20, 1995, a dramatic and bizarre incident occurred over the open ocean. That day, two US Navy Carriers, the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS John Paul Jones, were on their way back to San Diego, California, after supporting American troops during Operation Southern Watch in Iraq.
While conducting a typical training mission in their F-14 Tomcat fighter jet, Pilot Neil "Waylon" Jennings and Radar Interceptor Officer Lt. Buga hoped to liven things up for the crews on deck. Nearing the end of the flight, Jennings brought the aircraft near the John Paul Jones and performed a fly-by at supersonic speed. Suddenly, while wrapped in a shockwave, one of the F-14's engines exploded.
Caught on camera by a sailor from the USS Jones, the blast from the Tomcat astonished everyone. There was no way the pilots could have survived the airplane disintegrating at that speed. But miraculously, they did, even after performing a supersonic ejection, breaking the sound barrier, and ending up 55 miles away.
Both men only suffered minor injuries. They were lucky to be alive to tell the story.

My girl friend is a retired naval aviator on the E-2C Hawkeye. Her last mission was on reconnaissance although she was not the pilot. Sure enough, they experienced mechanical issues over the Arabian Sea and had to ditch at low altitudes. She lost consciousness upon hitting the water, and was then subject to a long recovery period. Lots of respect for the naval aviators as well as all who serve our country.

The ejection seats used in this mishap were Martin-Baker NACES (Navy Aircrew Common Ejection Seat), Navy designation SJU-17. They were tested and qualified from 0/0 to 600KEAS. This seat was also tested up to 50,000 ft from the back seat of an F-4 at China Lake. I know, because I was part of the Navy team that wrote the requirements for this seat, and was intimately involved with qualification testing. These seats are still used in the Navy T-45 aircraft, and also in the F-18E/F. If you look closely in the new Top Gun Maverick movie, you can see the NACES headbox (which contains the parachute) in most of the cockpit views. Too date, this seat has saved well over 100 Naval Aviators lives.

I was the conning officer on USS John Paul Jones (DDG53) that day. Several of us were on the starboard bridge wing in the shot with F14 explosion. The boat crew launched, picked up both pilots and had them back on the ship in about 8 minutes. We spent the next few hours on RHIBs picking up floating fragments from the aircraft. None were bigger than about 4' long. The F14 was helping us with a training exercise.

If the ship was as close as JD noted above, the carrier tower likely saw the parachutes soon after the fireball. It's also a testament to how the Driver and RIO were essentially in impeccable condition for ejecting at such a high rate of speed. When you eject at Mach 1, your limbs are usually noodles, broken, dislocated and shredded, and surviving the ejection might just mean drowning in your chute if your arms and legs don't work.

I doubt that they were actually going supersonic when the ejection seats fired. When a plane breaks up like that, the pieces typically decelerate very quickly. In fact, Waylon reported that when his seat left the cockpit, he didn't feel any kind of windblast at all, it was eerie how calm it all seemed. Going out over 400 knots, limb-flailing injuries of some kind are essentially guaranteed and he didn't have any of that.

A few things wrong with the video...people often mistake crossing the sound barrier as the visible cloud around the aircraft.
The momentary fog around the aircraft is called a vapor cone, and it is caused by condensed water molecules over the wings and the fuselage of the aircraft in high speed, but it doesn't necessarily have to be near the speed of sound. All you need is moisture, which is why you see these when planes are flying over the water or in cloudy days.

I was in both the Air Force and Army during my career. I've always been a ground guy. Things like this are why. Things like this happen, yes. But being 19yo, at war with a long range fighter group (F-111), and being tasked to do search and recovery after two separate crashes on practice runs - was challenging mentality. Pilots will tell you that if you have to crash over land or over sea, they would choose land. You don't really get to survive either but over land at least, generally, something can be brought back. Chaplin's and upper command will tell you there's a huge difference for the ones bearing that burden. I read the caption to this and in no way did i think there were survivors. So when he said "God was looking out for us." No truer words could be spoken. It was nice surprise knowing they survived.

Having worked in the aviation industry and have served in the military, I can say without reservation that the men weren't "lucky" to be survived.
Millions of man hours over decades of research and development lead to the technology and engineering that saved the lives of these two aircrew. Highly refined training standards, plans, systems and procedures on the part of the naval officers and crews lead to the speedy rescue and recovery of the aircrew.
Luck had nothing to do with it. Good old fashioned hard work and dedication saved these men.
Also...2:02 - the "USAF" never flew F-14 Tomcats. These were a navy plane. Not Air Force.

Easy: the speed of sound at sea level is about 767 miles per hours, which is 12.7833 miles per minute. If you do your math, it would take 4.3 minutes to land 55 miles.....away....if you stay supersonic......while strapped to your ejection seat!. Translation? Absolutely 100% unadulterated Bovine Organic Matter!!!. The pilots engine failed, generating that massive flames. They did NOT eject immediately.......the aircraft decelerated rapidly. Only after reducing power (the Tomcat has 2 engines) and speed (subsonic), they could not control the Tomcat, they had no other option but to egress. 55 miles away? Of course, they stayed aboard the Tomcat that far out until they could no longer control it. The only way to 100% confirm this mishap is to obtain the OFFICIAL mishap report from the U.S. Navy. I’d call it fake! Thumbs down until we have a link to the official report.

In 1979 I roomed with a guy from the USS Kennedy, which was in dry dock. He had a picture of an F-16 breaking the sound barrier at about 100 ft. above sea level. When the aircraft was inspected after the flight, they found cracks in the air frame. It was believed to be from the returning shock wave off the water adding to the normal stresses of a flight of that nature. Supposedly the CO stopped all low level high speed passes after that. I saw the picture, you could see the water being displaced right under the aircraft asa she went by.

The pilots survived because the ejection almost certainly was NOT at supersonic speed.
    1) The video said they leveled off at almost 600 knots. The speed of sound at sea level is 667 knots.
    2) At 2:49 it is reported they were doing a 6g pullup when they heard a bang. That means if the aircraft weighed 50,000 pounds at the time it would behave as if it weighed 300,000 pounds. Losing an engine under those conditions would cause a rapid deceleration.
    3) Even if they were supersonic when the aircraft started tumbling out of control as Lt. Buga reported, it would have violently decelerated. Given the time it took to make the decision to eject, then to actually get out of what was left of the plane, they would have been traveling much slower than they were at the start.
