    Hi, I'm 69 yrs old and ,while otherwise active,have had very tight hamstrings and low back pain for decades.
    Over the years I've tried many different h'string stretches and have found your
    method to be not only the most effective but also the quickest and easiest to do.
    Thank you

    That's awesome. This really works because you're neurologically controlling the length of the stretch, not mechanically moving it past the length it should be going. Consistency with it produces the best results.

    You have no idea how thankful I am. For a year I stretched wrong (bent back), then for at least a year irregularly, in part because the progress was extremely slow. I just did 5 cycles for each leg and the difference is there! Not a gymnast yet ofc, but it's more than I've accomplished in months!

    This works indeed, had about 65° right leg and 70° left, did 7 seconds for 5 sets, right skyrocket at 85° and left 80°, can't wait to check my front squats tonight.

    I’ve had low back pain for a long time but recently it’s become chronic. I’ve seen various people for help and have been following a rehab program at my gym, under instruction for two months, with little benefits to my back. I’ve followed your instruction today and for the first time in an age I am sitting comfortably with no pain. This is either a miracle or you’ve found something very special. All I can say is thank you and I will be continuing with this exercise.

      Mr. Hardwood - thank you for your kind words. It's great to hear you're feeling better. The providers at COOR Wellness have had good mentors. There is not one sources we can credit for teaching us everything. Dr. Josh Sandell influenced our methodology more than anyone else and he's probably where this was learned. Please share this with your friends. You'll never know who may need it too.

    definitely a thumbs up! See that's the best hamstring stretch because for one if you're experiencing lower back pains, by being on your back you're not risking putting unwanted strains or further injuring the ower back. so i do agree this is the best stretch

    Yes, keep pulling it closer. It'll change the angle at the hip and stretch different fibers within the hamstring.

  • @toddwilliamsen
    @toddwilliamsen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Actually, we tried this with my partial ACL tear, and my hamstrings were too tight where I could not lock my knee. The "best stretch" for me was they taught me the doorway technique. This is you put your foot up against the door frame and hold it there for 30 seconds or so. I would do this 3x scooting my butt closer to the door frame. To add more stretch, I would take jump rope or something else and put it on the bottom of me foot and slightly pull my foot towards me during the same stretch. Again, 30 second hold or more and each time try scooting your butt closer to the door frame. Your mileage may vary, but after several weeks of doing this I can now have my leg close to 90 degrees. Still progress as I would like to be able to touch my toes as my goal.

    Could you please do a video on stretching/strengthening muscles to do situps? I had a surgery for herniated disc few years back and would like to gain some flexibility back. Frequency will give long lasting results. It'll help pre/post exercise but I'm a firm believer in stretching in the "in-between" times. For instance, if you're an early work out person and work out before work, try to stretch twice later on in the day. That will give longer lasting results.

  • @CoorWellness
    @CoorWellness  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @elhnad - passive resistance is what prevented additional hip flexion. This is not an example of ART, but I am a certified ART practitioner. ART would likely accomplish a greater stretch because it'd apply mechanical tension on the hamstring with simultaneous contraction of the quadriceps. This stretch is great to do between ART sessions.

    Thanks for the video. Was the increase in hip flexion with knee ext more due to neural mobilization rather than pure hammy stretching?

  • @SuperSkinnymoose
    @SuperSkinnymoose 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Outstanding. I've been troubled (as a runner) with Pes anserinus bursitis that apparently is due to over-tight hamstrings pulling too tightly where a number of muscles and tendons attach to the tibia. Your stretches are showing some immediate relief of the symptoms. I'm curious about your comment re magnesium supplementation. Can you explain how this contributes.
    Many thanks for an genuinely useful video.

  • @BoyShyShy
    @BoyShyShy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I might be wrong, but how does dorsiflexion of the foot have anything to do with hamstrings? Tibialis anterior, yes, but hamstrings?

    • @nathanellison594
      @nathanellison594 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Because it will stretch the calf a little and the short head of the bicep formoris affects the calf, this maybe helping stretch the short head a little. Just a guess. But it is usually best to stretch the calves before the hamstrings because of there connection

    • @Cooket2
      @Cooket2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Piotr Marczak you are right, the guy in the video is actually giving out the wrong information by telling people to do that. the hamstrings attach from ischial tuberosity (bone you sit on) to the top of the tibia, therefore anything involving the ankle has 0 effect on the hamstrings
      the only reason you can feel a stretch when dorsiflexing the foot is because you are irritating the sciatic nerve which runs from your lower back down the leg to your feet, which is why anything involving bending the lower back, or dorsiflexing the ankle isn't actually lengthening the hamstrings, youre just irritating sciatic nerve

    • @BoyShyShy
      @BoyShyShy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks a lot Cooket2 , that makes a lot of sense!

    • @CoorWellness
      @CoorWellness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cooket2 You're stretching the hamstring stretch when you extend the knee. Ankle dorsi flexion helps the whole posterior chain move better. When patients with sciatic nerve trouble dorsi flex the ankle it flosses the nerve through entrapment points; it doesn't irritate the nerve. Nearly 100% of people with sciatica from a peripheral nerve entrapment that incorporate this stretch get fully resolution of their symptoms. If their trouble is from a disc injury they will likely need a different approach.

    • @CoorWellness
      @CoorWellness  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Piotr Marczak I respectfully disagree with +Cooket2 . I never claim dorsiflexion of the ankle creates the stretch in the hamstring proper; it does stretch the posterior chain though & releases the sciatic nerve from entrapment points.

    I had a 40ish patient complaining of head ache and tight chest. I spent the hour Using strain counter strap technics on C1 - C2 (yes neck). Her headache, the pressure in her chest gone. Surprise!Surprise She could now for the first time in her life not only touch her toes, but put the palm of her hands on the floor. I will post a video in the future of this technique, as I am filming a serious of courses in the next month or two. Making therapists work much easier.

  • @CoorWellness
    @CoorWellness  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Vatos75 good question. I think the neural mobilization is an important piece to this, and Active Release Techniques, but to say which is more important is difficult to say. Are you familiar with other soft-tissue treatments like Graston? I like those, but the thing I like about ART is that the patient moves the joint and improves the strength/neurologically controls the antagonistic muscle.

    Does this increase hamstring flexibility only after the exercise, or is the effect prolonged after maintaining repeated sessions?

    If my hamstrings are imbalanced should I only do one leg?

    This works for me but i may suffer a backlash and take some advils again, man i'm real tired about feeling 75 at 50. My back & hamstrings are so stiff that HomeDepot could put me in a planer and sell me off as lumber. I'm lookin forward in a few weeks to finally start a serious physio program and not just simple (but cool) heat and cold home remedies.

      Hi Ajda - there's no need to over think it. Perform this as natural as possible; discontinue if you experience any pain. Share with your friends too.

      @@CoorWellness thanks for your answer. I am asking because my boyfriend has disc protrusion. His hamstrings are so tight that they are pulling the pelvis in the posterior tilt. I am trying to find a hamstring stretch that would not hurt his back...

    I think general gentle yoga is best for you. Basic core strengthening too.

    I have had hamstring problems for the last year,I had to stop playing football and went to a physio.I did everything I was supposed to do and felt no pain for 4 months,went back exercising,doing runs and sprints and that was fine.But as soon as I started kicking a ball the pain came back..

    wow thank you for this video. I have Scheuermann's disease which has already run it's path. I wore a back brace during my growth spurt which helped with the curve but every muscle in my legs are extremely tight. I find it difficult to stretch but i tried this and it actually worked even tho it didn't feel painful like the other stretches I have tried. Do you suggest any other stretches for my condition?

    I'm a little confused as to whether this is an actual stretch on the hamstring muscles (if so, why the dorsiflex of the foot) or if it's a neurodynamic technique, i.e. mobilizing/lengthening the ischiatic nerve. I apologize if some of these terms don't translate from my native language as intended, and I hope the question makes sense anyway.
