Darko Milicic hated basketball as a whole, not just playing in the NBA. In some of the Serbian podcasts where he was interviewed he talked about it. Basically, until high school (age of 15) he was playing in his hometown and enjoying basketball. As he was tall and extremely talented he went to play in another city in one of the best youth basketball programs in Serbia and lived alone in what is essentially a boarding school. Basketball became more professional and stopped being a game. He said that he wanted to quit a million times at that moment and return home, but didn't have the heart to tell his parents as they sacrificed a lot during the 90s (which were an extremely bad and rough period of time) to bring up him and his sister. Especially later on when he was projected to go to the NBA and earn millions. It didn't help that he was drafted at only 18 years of age with an extremely hot head and crazy temper. If he had some form of psychological help or support he would have maybe had a different career trajectory. I would even dare to think that if he remained in Europe under euro coaches which are more strict that his career would have been better. Nothing worse than putting such a lost and crazy kid in the NBA, which alienates much older and mature players with the style of training, playing and the off-court life. I'm glad that he matured and found happiness in life afterwards, he seems like a really cool guy now.

This guy never made the NBA, of course, but I talked to a coworker who kept in touch with this player several years later, and he told me he was playing pro ball in Japan. I said, wait a minute, I thought he didn't even like basketball. Coworker said, he doesn't, but he does like making half a million $ a year.

I have seen Darko on 2 weddings, that was at the beginning of his NBA career.. The guy was crazy, actually more or less the same as in those videos.. But now he is settled and normal family man, you can even find him in local church on Sunday..
One forgotten story of a guy who fell out of love with basketball is Larry Sanders. At one point the Bucks were fighting tooth and nail to get this guy on the court, but I remember that summer when something snapped mentally for him. I hope he's doing well now.
Great example. He was a player that everyone wanted on their team but he fell into depression and wanted to leave the NBA. He tried a comeback but he couldn't really keep up with the demands of the NBA

You conveniently omitted to mention that Darko actually started hating basketball in Minnesota because the entire team was helping Kevin Love stat pad. He was averaging something like 28/15/7 while they were a 25w team. On one occasion they got into conflict because of the way team played and team management asked Darko to apologize to Love since he was the biggest star on the team to what he replied: “I’m not gonna apologize to that cry baby.” Not that I’m defending Darko as my fellow countrymen, but like you and many of these players say, NBA is 99% business and 1% basketball.

WCS and Parker really spit some facts, the NBA is by far the best league in terms of quality of talent but in terms of pure enjoyment it’s done more than gone down hill and it’s hard for fans to understand that. The league isn’t what it was and while those guys aren’t perfect, the NBA is very very different than the game we grew up playing and I think that’s where we lose guys. Not to mention Europeans do pretty much everything better than we do lol but that’s subjective to an extent
I have a friend who’s a pro and also in the national team. Not USA of course. But still, they train 2 times, plus a weight room session, 6 days a week. And the remaining time are for footage, team meetings, etc. During his off season when he gets to come home and when we hangout he doesn’t event wanna talk about basketball. He gets paid pretty well compared to your average 9-5 worker, plus he can save most of his money as food and accommodation are all paid for, but still it’s 8-10 hours of sweat, sore muscles, intense workouts and suffering for 6 days a week. Most people do not understand the work pro athletes put in behind the scenes, all they see is the fame and the money, they never see the hard work.

He said he never receives a pass by his team mates who they don' t make use of his great ability to pesent himself free under the rim coming from nowhere as he did in the Olympiakos schemes. There are probably a lot more who could make this list. Basketball is one of those sports where you pretty much need to be physically abnormal to be exceptional. If you're 6'9 and athletic, you may not love the game, but you'd be a fool not to take advantage of a chance to go to school tuition free, or make a few pesos if you can. Might as well ride the gravy train to the end of the line.
Most players move to Europe because they can no longer find a job in the NBA. Maybe at the very end of a bench but you can go to Europe and get starter's minutes. This is just guys making excuses.

I love basketball. Always loved basketball. I played two seasons professionally where you practise everyday, then game day. In preseason you practise twice a day. Even without injuries your body is always tired and achy. You stop enjoying the game, it becomes a chore. You question if it is a suitable activiity for a grown man. No matter how much you might loved the game you loose that love. When I started playing casually again, the old passion came back. Anyone who critizes player for such statement, try it yourself. See how much you like it.
Anyone who anytime saw Darko, know dude was one of the most talented players ever, he made Dirk look like a turtle, dude was fast and athletic, but his mind wasnt there, I truly believe it was the money, he was poor, and became rich overnight, he used to party, drink, snort coke, and plus his Ego was so high, Im pretty sure people kept pumping his ego because he was second pick in a STACKED draft, sadly he was a simple dude who had so much potential and talent, even when eh came in league dude was 3 levels higher than rest of the league, just find his old matches, when he gets touches, dude is so talented and smooth, but sad story truly. The first guy played for Rick Carlisle who is an out dated coach. He put Porzingis in the corner and wanted Luka to do all the work. I always wonder what I would. I mean you get a shitload of money to begin with. I'd probably would play my 2-3 years and then retire. But I think alot of the starters are overwhelmed with there wealth and are in need to play further although they hate it because they want to keep there standard of living. Not to mention that and I dont mean it offensiv in anyway some players are just not smart enough to make a living without basketball.

Just throwing it out there, but plenty of people that don't make the kind of money NBA players make still work a job they hate. If I was making NBA money to do my job, I'd be more than fine. Pay me tge 13th man's salary and I'd still be making far more than what I currently do.
When a sport stops being something you do for fun with your friends and schoolmates, where you can play with abandon and let your skill and imagination run riot; and instead becomes a job where you are paid to perform, follow a coach's instruction in order to win; then your love of the sport is going to die.

In the NBA there problably was a lot of prejudice against foreign players, white European players, and also against white American players, such as Jimmer Freddete. Maybe now with Luka Doncic this is changing, as every team would like to find a new Luka out there. But I`m sure that those Europeans would have had a much better NBA career if they have been given a real chance to play.
Um, sports tend to be color-free if you have ability. White guy might have to prove himself against similar sized black dude, but at the end of the day it's all about putting the ball in the hole. Ask Tiger Woods. Jimmer lost me when he straight-up refused to play point guard and to develop the skills that entails, despite not being able to guard most NBA shooting guards. Kutluay tried the NBA but couldn't make the rotation and similar to V-Span he turned back to Europe and the rest was history..@@acceptpapara

I agree. Especially since players don't hone their skills at college for four years anymore. Basketball is completely dumbed down in the US. Jokic and Doncic are making that pretty clear than even with disproportionately lower representation in the NBA as a whole, the Eruos that play here are making dramatic impacts. Jokic and Doncic are not an outlier, they are a trend.

True; Luka likes to humiliate other players, while Jokic does his job and earn his money, that's all. Jokic did care of winning his first ring, but i think, he doesn't like the idea to succeed in the playoffs during the next seasons, at all. He was literally pissed in terms of his very short holiday after his deep playoff run, heading to the finals and his first ring. WCS and Parker really spit some facts, the NBA is by far the best league in terms of quality of talent but in terms of pure enjoyment it’s done more than gone down hill and it’s hard for fans to understand that. The league isn’t what it was and while those guys aren’t perfect, the NBA is very very different than the game we grew up playing and I think that’s where we lose guys. Not to mention Europeans do pretty much everything better than we do lol but that’s subjective to an extent

I have a friend who’s a pro and also in the national team. Not USA of course. But still, they train 2 times, plus a weight room session, 6 days a week. And the remaining time are for footage, team meetings, etc. During his off season when he gets to come home and when we hangout he doesn’t event wanna talk about basketball. He gets paid pretty well compared to your average 9-5 worker, plus he can save most of his money as food and accommodation are all paid for, but still it’s 8-10 hours of sweat, sore muscles, intense workouts and suffering for 6 days a week. Most people do not understand the work pro athletes put in behind the scenes, all they see is the fame and the money, they never see the hard work.

He said he never receives a pass by his team mates who they don' t make use of his great ability to pesent himself free under the rim coming from nowhere as he did in the Olympiakos schemes. Instead the NBA game is of few or no passes. His coach does not consider him in the first 14 players. He is already demoralized

There are probably a lot more who could make this list. Basketball is one of those sports where you pretty much need to be physically abnormal to be exceptional. If you're 6'9 and athletic, you may not love the game, but you'd be a fool not to take advantage of a chance to go to school tuition free, or make a few pesos if you can. Might as well ride the gravy train to the end of the line.
Most players move to Europe because they can no longer find a job in the NBA. Maybe at the very end of a bench but you can go to Europe and get starter's minutes. This is just guys making excuses.

I love basketball. Always loved basketball. I played two seasons professionally where you practise everyday, then game day. In preseason you practise twice a day. Even without injuries your body is always tired and achy. You stop enjoying the game, it becomes a chore. You question if it is a suitable activiity for a grown man. No matter how much you might loved the game you loose that love. When I started playing casually again, the old passion came back. Anyone who critizes player for such statement, try it yourself. See how much you like it.

But Pistons had championship team and didnt care for him. such a sad story, but heard he is happy now so thats good.

Just throwing it out there, but plenty of people that don't make the kind of money NBA players make still work a job they hate. If I was making NBA money to do my job, I'd be more than fine. Pay me tge 13th man's salary and I'd still be making far more than what I currently do.
When a sport stops being something you do for fun with your friends and schoolmates, where you can play with abandon and let your skill and imagination run riot; and instead becomes a job where you are paid to perform, follow a coach's instruction in order to win; then your love of the sport is going to die.

In the NBA there problably was a lot of prejudice against foreign players, white European players, and also against white American players, such as Jimmer Freddete. Maybe now with Luka Doncic this is changing, as every team would like to find a new Luka out there.
