- One of the most memorable days during our trip to Banff National Park in July 2023 was the Sentinal Pass hike that starts at Moraine Lake and beyond Larch Valley. We've never done a hike at this altitude and it was definitely tough on our inexperienced bodies but it was so worth the sweat, blisters, huffing and puffing. One of the most beautiful viewpoints at the end of the trail which made the challenge all that more rewarding. We heard that in Autumn the larch colours are amazing so we would love to go back sometime in Autumn :)

06:54 - 08:01 The ascent onto Sentinel Pass
08:01 - 09:42 Enjoying the top of Sentinel Pass
09:42 - 13:59 The descent back to Moraine Lake

I did the same hike last September. Loved the trail and did not find it physically challenging. But scaling the pass itself? I have an acute fear of heights and nearly passed out two-thirds up the pass. I found the path to be too narrow and slippery because of its shale-like consistency. And the steep embankment on the side...not for me! The good news is that the pass is just a small fraction of the whole trail from Lake Moraine. If a person doesn't do the pass, it's not like they missed out on the spectacular scenery.
