1995 is haunting. Gohan's eyes are open and completely white, lying motionless in a puddle. Super looks like he fell asleep in the rain. In the original, there's so much more movement and chaos in Trunk's transformation too.

In super, they made Gohan look peaceful in death, but Gohan knew he couldn't die, he needed to be there for trunks. So in Z, his body looks in pain. It's a good detail that super totally missed

Milo goten and trunks both transformed without any reason, and don't give me that "they have the blood of super saiyan" shit. Caulifla, Kale and Cabba are fully blooded more developed saiyans so wouldn't they have more of an excuse to acquire super saiyan.

90's version had me crying along with Trunks as a kids. 90's DBZ violence was legit with the fighting you felt the blows. Super on the other hand was neutered... Imagine the tournament of power in the 90's fight scenes would've been ruthless.
Exactly what TOP should of been like. Just straight survival. No killing? Fine. But that doesn't stop breaking arms and legs or even a paralyzing blow. Can't fight effectively(if at all) if you can't move from anything from the waist down.

They just had a terrible schedule at the time and Yamamuro’s plastic character sheets made things even worse. And due to this lack of time everyone suffered (animators in particular) meaning it doesn’t matter how good of an artist you are if you don’t have the time to produce art properly
DBZ absolutely destroys DBS in everything from atmosphere, to coloring (Fuck you bright colored blue haired Trunks), to the emotion and shot of the scene.
Look at the lines in his face in 1995. DBZ knew what they wanted. They wanted to show pain. Trauma. Loss. Rage. They made sure it was not pretty. They knew to make it violent. To take their time. Just the flashing red light leaves so much of an impact. Its horrible and beautiful and raw all at once, creating a scene that is burned into your mind forever. The remake is just a passionless remake. They "prettied up" the animation. They made death look soft. They didn't use the colours and the environment at all! Everything is clear and spotless and soft. Its... pathetic. It holds nothing in comparison. ...this is an insult, to recreate this scene and to take away from what it was... it would have been kinder just to show the original.
Why does 2016 version look like 1985 lol they skimped on the budget. And the hair flickering to SS was cheesy and awful. Took away from the whole thing. Worst remake I have ever seen
1995 has such much depth. The way Trunks transforms is very reminiscent of when Goku lost Krillin and also went into a SSJ inducing rage, not to mention Gohan laying face down in the puddle, the absolute indignity really setup the scene.
2016 lacks: Color of tone to fit the atmosphere. Contrast of darkness Voice acting Anger and heart break Gohan looks unconscious from having too many beers rather than flat face dead like in 1995 ...Not even a comparison.
I personally wouldn't say entirely. I really liked the scene in the Tournament of Power where Master Roshi delivers his most powerful kamehameha wave in order to defeat his opponent shortly followed up by him dying and Goku saving his life. That scene was one of the best in all of Super and I believe that there was a lot of nostalgia and emotion in there, especially for the fans that watched from the very beginning when Goku was a kid since Roshi was essentially like Goku's second father. But hey, that's just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own :)

I hate the new animation style. Everything is so smooth and shiny. It makes them look like fucking dolls and makes expressing emotions way more difficult. You can't honestly tell me then new one portrays even half of the pain Trunks would actually be feeling.
Yeah for dramatic/intense scenes like this, I definitely prefer the old animation style. The rough aspect only amplifies how "rough" the situation is. It gives it more flavor. What's more is the effects with the surroundings when Trunks is pounding that shit. Way more impactful. It's less about just "adding those effects in" and more about how the key animators are convey those effects from imagination to final product

Super is mostly fine. The only nostalgia-tards are the ones that insist that DBZ is some sacred cow, as it were. God damn, DBZ had some shit animation that could compare to episode 5 of DBS. So many off model shots, and Goku's first transformation was ruined by completely dorky hair. I like the old animations because they look actually written as to where super looks kind of made by computers if you know what i mean. Everything looks like it was made for kids.
Everything is animated digitally for Super, making it all new, brighter lighting, highlights on the character, etc. The scene in 1992 is animated hand drawn on traditional paper. The color palette is different as well, suiting the mood more. That's basically what you're saying, right?

One small element that is getting under appreciated from the 1995 version is the pulsating red light in the background , that little detail adds such a layer of depth to the scene and I love it!

Not my favourite fight, but in pure animation it was stunning. Of course the Broly movie looks better but that goes without saying. Hell, even the final fight in Super looks astounding. And that final shot of Goku and Freeza is so awesome. I get DBZ is this treasure in the internet but saying Super is entirely poor looking is just wrong. However the scene in the video is shit lmao.

Though if we're talking looks I still think MUI Goku vs Jiren looks fantastic. I will say it's flashy and sometimes annoying but I do think it looked nice. If nothing else, the art and models were on point. Still I see what you mean and totally respect that.

They used original footage of Trunk's when his hair was purple before. However they greyed out the colours so you couldn't see what his old hair colour was

Nah, this new version in Super is an insult. In the original, you really felt bad for Trunks. He has the most emotional transformation of them all. It brought tears to my eyes. You could almost feel his pain. The Super version is just trash. In the original you could see him slowly transforming, like it's breaking out. Not in Super. Par for the course in Super. Not a single transformation in Super is even cool to see.
And in the original the way gohan body looks makes everything more heart breaking but in supers version they made it look like he died a peaceful death
I mean I'm not saying I don't enjoy the original one (The Funimation dub one, not the Japanese dub), but honestly, the 2016 one was cut short and paid less attention to because it was a short flash back scene. A lot of super is good once you get past the movie arcs that should have never been redone, and some of it they cut corners on for sure.
Original one is by far more badass and better. I hate the new style their using in Dragon Ball Super. All of the characters are insanely thin and look like a rated PG anime unlike the original. Oh yeah the original one also shows more emotion and obviously better background music.
Trunks saying goodbye to Gohan in Xenoverse 2 is even more sad. If you really think about it, Trunks has a pretty sad life. These random androids come out of nowhere and begin killing millions of innocent people, all of his friends, and his best friend/mentor, setting him off. Even when he goes Super Saiyan, he still can't defeat the androids. He goes back into the past to warn everyone, and then creates a *new* enemy as a result, causing another reason for him to hate himself. I feel bad for him.

It's the little things that matter. Super is in a word: clichéd. They just slap stuff together and say "alright this thing is right here let's move on". What you see in Z is believable as well as relatable. Trunks isn't just in distress, he's in misery. His eyes are leaking tears so fast you cant tell when the crying ends and the rain begins. The way he walks towards Gohan as though he were half alive, the way he stammers his name, totally in denial, clutching his lifeless body irrationally, the way he screams, clenching his fists until it bled, overcome with grief, anger, resentment, desperation. All of this with a committedly bleak and hopeless atmosphere and you have yourself a solid emotion. Super doesn't care about the authenticity of what it presents as a medium. This comparison is just a one to one slideshow of what I mean.

tbh I was really excited for dbs , I even tried to ignore the bullshit jokes they threw at first but it's too much, the fights aren't good ( not even sure if there's a complete fight in 60 episodes so far ) since they always have to end them with a plot twist or a ridiculous joke, the only character that is deveopped is Goku (yes not even vegeta, the only developement he got was turning ssj blue and getting his ass kikcked before goku ) the animations aren't terrible, they are LAZY. they aren't bad, they are LAZY as fuck. we all remember scenes in dragon ball z where we knew few seconds before which part is going to explode or fall apart and we could qualify it of bad animation ( tho it was unique to dbz) but there isn't a single episode in dbs where you don't see an autistic drawing of a face or a background scene ... dbs = disapointment of 2016
Buddy, have you considered actually comparing the effort a certain 90s show made compared to a 2010s show? The 2016 scene wasn't good because they didn't really want to give it any proper impact and just wanted it to explain Trunk's backstory. They didn't bother making it just as bleak as the original. The 1995 special was meant to make the audience feel for Trunks and realize just how messed up and bleak his world was, hence a greater emphasis on Trunk's pain and the realization of the audience of just how tragic the death of the last Z fighter is. There are plenty of shows post the 90s that do similar kinds of emotional and grim storytelling. Every era had good stuff and bad stuff overall. What matters is how much effort the producers and writers of said works made in the making of those shows. You can say that storytelling in the Dragon Ball franchise peaked in the 90s but there are plenty of franchises and new shows that have peak writing in this era. Just because some franchises did better in the past that today doesn't mean all franchises did better then than now.

Dark tones, pouring rain, a half buried face lifeless in a puddle, fists clenched until they bleed, and even the close-ups. Even muted, 1995 is better, because it visually gives you the fury and pain of losing Gohan (I'm literally tearing up just writing this). I love and defend Super in many ways, but they need to let go of the past. People want blood. They hate censorship, no matter the age. Why? Because it takes from the realism of the situation. I think what your trying to say is 'Character Acting'. Super has little to know character acting and everything just looks so stiff. DBS Broly had a lot of character acting in it which made it look a lot better.

Whats lost meaning is that Trunks is supposed to strike the ground AFTER he turns Ssj to symbolize that though he has attained the strength to help Gohan, its too late and that strength is in vain. Now he can only use that strength to strike the ground in despair, knowing he cant bring Gohan back.
Usually animation gets better as time goes on whereas in Dbz's case it seems to get worse. Especially when you compare it to something like Hxh for example, which looks 10x better than it did in 2011. Toei, what are ya doin
Dbs definitely has better voices sounds though, Trunks sounds so much better in Super than he does in Dbz. But i mean you kinda expect VAs to get better as they get more experienced.
Because HxH was done by Madhouse (probably one of the best studios out there) while DBS is being made by Toeshit, Toei has 100% sold out and became a cash cow milking trash studio. Same happened with One Piece, it used to have an original art style and atmosphere with good animation where it mattered for the most part. Then they got lazy and complacent and now all they touch is cash grab garbage. They know they don't have to try anymore, One Piece has a huge fanbase and Oda's manga is good enough that even their garbage quality anime is watchable and so does Dragon Ball by title alone. They can throw shit at the audiences and they will gladly eat it. Anime industry in Japan is fucked honestly, there's too many obstacles for people wanting to make quality content, instead they have to catter to masses and make this generic low quality garbage which is why it's sometimes so hard to find good anime :/

Original Z hands down. Everything in the special is infinitely better in comparison-especially the tinny liberties that Toei staff takes from the original manga and somehow, they manage to make the whole thing surpisingly better than in the source material unlike most of the films that they've produced like Broly's mediocre trilogy and Super Android 13. The entire fittingly bleak mood throughout the scene with the ravaged city, Gohan's tattered corpse in a close-up shot, red traffic light dimly-and in a strangely fitting way-illuminating both characters, Trunks movements, the voice acting, Kikuchi's magnificent score, the climax of the scene, everything.

I also prefer the original one. But I think it's kinda hard to compare them. The 1993 version was a TV special all about Trunks and this was one of the climax scenes, the 2016 version is a little flashback in a regular TV episode, of course the first one will be better respectively more fleshed out. And I think the soundtrack and voice acting in the 2016 version was really good, you can really feel and hear Trunks pain and agony in his voice and scream.
The budget was equal to 2 episodes and the advancement of technology and techniques should have made up for the difference in budget. It's been 20 fucking years.

That may be true for certain things, but not nescecarely for Art and Animation. What changes is the way they are produced which can be better or worse depending on peoples opinion. It has been 20 years, so what? It has been hunders of years since Van Gogh, Michelangelo and Da Vinci, using your logic todays art should be better than their paintings which isn't nescecarely true. Technique has advanced since then, nowadays everything is digitaly made and not hand drawn anymore, but that doesn't nescecarely make it better. You just can't please everyone. People want the same art and animation style like 20 years agon bur at the same time they want nowadays technique. What now? Sometimes you just have to go with time and accept certain things and changes, they can't stick to 80es animation style forever. DBZ did have very shit and sloppy art and animation parts too, especially in the early parts of the series as well as DBS had good moments, Goku vs Beerus, Vegeta vs Frieza or Goku vs Hit had nearly BoG and RoF movie quality which is better than 99'9% of anything that Z ever created, most people are just to biased to admit through their notalgia googles.It would be interessting to see people reacting to the original, unedited and unremastered DBT footage back from 1989, I doubt I would get away much better than DBS does. DBZ has been remastered like 4 time already while DBS is still ongoing. Also DBZ didn't have constant good animation until late Cell saga which was like 200 episodes into the show. Give it some time, DBS already has become better than it used to be (it's still not perfect, but he haven'ts seen stuff like we did in episode 5 quite a while now) and it might get better as the show goes on, gets DVD releases and so on. Nobody knows how DBS will look 20 years from now, then you and only then you can really compare it with curent DBZ.

I just dont realize why they just didnt remaster the scene from the special and put it on the show. Also to everyone saying the animation in dbz and dbs is bad. Neither of them are bad I mean my god people just want to find somethign to hate. For Dbz everything was hand drawn and it was pretty great animation for its time it just gets overshadowed by everything we have now. As for Super the only bad animation scenes were early in the series when toei didnt really care about it or think that the anime was going to go as long as it has.
I never realized how the background impacted the scene. Gohan's lifeless corpse facedown in a puddle around a fallen, destroyed city really hits home how badly they have lost to the androids.

They just had a terrible schedule at the time and Yamamuro’s plastic character sheets made things even worse. And due to this lack of time everyone suffered (animators in particular) meaning it doesn’t matter how good of an artist you are if you don’t have the time to produce art properly

DBZ knew what they wanted. They wanted to show pain. Trauma. Loss. Rage. They made sure it was not pretty. They knew to make it violent. To take their time. Just the flashing red light leaves so much of an impact. Its horrible and beautiful and raw all at once, creating a scene that is burned into your mind forever.
The remake is just a passionless remake. They "prettied up" the animation. They made death look soft. They didn't use the colours and the environment at all! Everything is clear and spotless and soft. Its... pathetic. It holds nothing in comparison.
...this is an insult, to recreate this scene and to take away from what it was... it would have been kinder just to show the original.

I really liked the scene in the Tournament of Power where Master Roshi delivers his most powerful kamehameha wave in order to defeat his opponent shortly followed up by him dying and Goku saving his life. That scene was one of the best in all of Super and I believe that there was a lot of nostalgia and emotion in there, especially for the fans that watched from the very beginning when Goku was a kid since Roshi was essentially like Goku's second father. But hey, that's just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own :)

Yeah for dramatic/intense scenes like this, I definitely prefer the old animation style. The rough aspect only amplifies how "rough" the situation is. It gives it more flavor. What's more is the effects with the surroundings when Trunks is pounding that shit. Way more impactful. It's less about just "adding those effects in" and more about how the key animators are convey those effects from imagination to final product

You could almost feel his pain. The Super version is just trash. In the original you could see him slowly transforming, like it's breaking out. Not in Super.

I mean I'm not saying I don't enjoy the original one (The Funimation dub one, not the Japanese dub), but honestly, the 2016 one was cut short and paid less attention to because it was a short flash back scene. A lot of super is good once you get past the movie arcs that should have never been redone, and some of it they cut corners on for sure.

He goes back into the past to warn everyone, and then creates a *new* enemy as a result, causing another reason for him to hate himself. I feel bad for him.

It's the little things that matter. Super is in a word: clichéd. They just slap stuff together and say "alright this thing is right here let's move on". What you see in Z is believable as well as relatable. Trunks isn't just in distress, he's in misery. His eyes are leaking tears so fast you cant tell when the crying ends and the rain begins. The way he walks towards Gohan as though he were half alive, the way he stammers his name, totally in denial, clutching his lifeless body irrationally, the way he screams, clenching his fists until it bled, overcome with grief, anger, resentment, desperation. All of this with a committedly bleak and hopeless atmosphere and you have yourself a solid emotion. Super doesn't care about the authenticity of what it presents as a medium. This comparison is just a one to one slideshow of what I mean.

tbh I was really excited for dbs , I even tried to ignore the bullshit jokes they threw at first but it's too much, the fights aren't good ( not even sure if there's a complete fight in 60 episodes so far ) since they always have to end them with a plot twist or a ridiculous joke, the only character that is deveopped is Goku (yes not even vegeta, the only developement he got was turning ssj blue and getting his ass kikcked before goku ) the animations aren't terrible, they are LAZY. they aren't bad, they are LAZY as fuck. we all remember scenes in dragon ball z where we knew few seconds before which part is going to explode or fall apart and we could qualify it of bad animation ( tho it was unique to dbz) but there isn't a single episode in dbs where you don't see an autistic drawing of a face or a background scene ... dbs = disapointment of 2016

Buddy, have you considered actually comparing the effort a certain 90s show made compared to a 2010s show?
The 2016 scene wasn't good because they didn't really want to give it any proper impact and just wanted it to explain Trunk's backstory. They didn't bother making it just as bleak as the original.
The 1995 special was meant to make the audience feel for Trunks and realize just how messed up and bleak his world was, hence a greater emphasis on Trunk's pain and the realization of the audience of just how tragic the death of the last Z fighter is.
There are plenty of shows post the 90s that do similar kinds of emotional and grim storytelling.
Every era had good stuff and bad stuff overall.
What matters is how much effort the producers and writers of said works made in the making of those shows.
You can say that storytelling in the Dragon Ball franchise peaked in the 90s but there are plenty of franchises and new shows that have peak writing in this era.
Just because some franchises did better in the past that today doesn't mean all franchises did better then than now.

Dark tones, pouring rain, a half buried face lifeless in a puddle, fists clenched until they bleed, and even the close-ups. Even muted, 1995 is better, because it visually gives you the fury and pain of losing Gohan (I'm literally tearing up just writing this). I love and defend Super in many ways, but they need to let go of the past. People want blood. They hate censorship, no matter the age. Why? Because it takes from the realism of the situation. Case in point.
btw this is a retcon technically as in the manga future trunks could already go super saiyan before gohan passed.
the thing super is really missing is emotion and movement, im not sure how to explain it but the 1995 has more movement to its animation

I think what your trying to say is 'Character Acting'. Super has little to know character acting and everything just looks so stiff. DBS Broly had a lot of character acting in it which made it look a lot better.

Whats lost meaning is that Trunks is supposed to strike the ground AFTER he turns Ssj to symbolize that though he has attained the strength to help Gohan, its too late and that strength is in vain.
Now he can only use that strength to strike the ground in despair, knowing he cant bring Gohan back.
Usually animation gets better as time goes on whereas in Dbz's case it seems to get worse. Especially when you compare it to something like Hxh for example, which looks 10x better than it did in 2011. Toei, what are ya doin
Dbs definitely has better voices sounds though, Trunks sounds so much better in Super than he does in Dbz. But i mean you kinda expect VAs to get better as they get more experienced.
Because HxH was done by Madhouse (probably one of the best studios out there) while DBS is being made by Toeshit, Toei has 100% sold out and became a cash cow milking trash studio. Same happened with One Piece, it used to have an original art style and atmosphere with good animation where it mattered for the most part.
Then they got lazy and complacent and now all they touch is cash grab garbage. They know they don't have to try anymore, One Piece has a huge fanbase and Oda's manga is good enough that even their garbage quality anime is watchable and so does Dragon Ball by title alone.
They can throw shit at the audiences and they will gladly eat it. Anime industry in Japan is fucked honestly, there's too many obstacles for people wanting to make quality content, instead they have to catter to masses and make this generic low quality garbage which is why it's sometimes so hard to find good anime :/
...Except DBS comes out once every week, whereas HxH comes out once every blue moon

Everything in the special is infinitely better in comparison-especially the tinny liberties that Toei staff takes from the original manga and somehow, they manage to make the whole thing surpisingly better than in the source material unlike most of the films that they've produced like Broly's mediocre trilogy and Super Android 13.
The entire fittingly bleak mood throughout the scene with the ravaged city, Gohan's tattered corpse in a close-up shot, red traffic light dimly-and in a strangely fitting way-illuminating both characters, Trunks movements, the voice acting, Kikuchi's magnificent score, the climax of the scene, everything.

I also prefer the original one. But I think it's kinda hard to compare them. The 1993 version was a TV special all about Trunks and this was one of the climax scenes, the 2016 version is a little flashback in a regular TV episode, of course the first one will be better respectively more fleshed out. And I think the soundtrack and voice acting in the 2016 version was really good, you can really feel and hear Trunks pain and agony in his voice and scream.
The budget was equal to 2 episodes and the advancement of technology and techniques should have made up for the difference in budget. It's been 20 fucking years.

Budget for two episodes is still more than for one. Also what's always this "things should become better over time" argument? That may be true for certain things, but not nescecarely for Art and Animation. What changes is the way they are produced which can be better or worse depending on peoples opinion. It has been 20 years, so what? It has been hunders of years since Van Gogh, Michelangelo and Da Vinci, using your logic todays art should be better than their paintings which isn't nescecarely true. Technique has advanced since then, nowadays everything is digitaly made and not hand drawn anymore, but that doesn't nescecarely make it better. You just can't please everyone. People want the same art and animation style like 20 years agon bur at the same time they want nowadays technique. What now? Sometimes you just have to go with time and accept certain things and changes, they can't stick to 80es animation style forever.
DBZ did have very shit and sloppy art and animation parts too, especially in the early parts of the series as well as DBS had good moments, Goku vs Beerus, Vegeta vs Frieza or Goku vs Hit had nearly BoG and RoF movie quality which is better than 99'9% of anything that Z ever created, most people are just to biased to admit through their notalgia googles.It would be interessting to see people reacting to the original, unedited and unremastered DBT footage back from 1989, I doubt I would get away much better than DBS does. DBZ has been remastered like 4 time already while DBS is still ongoing. Also DBZ didn't have constant good animation until late Cell saga which was like 200 episodes into the show. Give it some time, DBS already has become better than it used to be (it's still not perfect, but he haven'ts seen stuff like we did in episode 5 quite a while now) and it might get better as the show goes on, gets DVD releases and so on. Nobody knows how DBS will look 20 years from now, then you and only then you can really compare it with curent DBZ.

And I know I'm beating a dead horse when I say this, but the animation for episode five and Goku vs Frieza was way worse than the animation from even the original Saiyan arc, let alone the following arcs.

You are a great exception then, I've dealed with way to many nostalgia Z fags who think DBZ ha absolute perfect and superb animation when it didn't by a long shot. DBZ also only had really god animation for a few selected key scenes, the rest, especially all the filler parts , are medicore at best. Yes this scene was worse than the original? So what? It was a 2 minute recap, of course it's gonna be less impressing and worse than the original, what did you expect? People can get so upset about every minor detail. They could have uresed the old footage, but then people would call them lazy for doing that. Now they are lazy because they didn't spend all the budget into one fucking recap. Some people just can't be pleased, can they?

Also speaking of episdoe 5 and RoF arc, always when people bitch around about DBS animation, they use shots from that one famous episode or the RoF arc. I have bad shots from DBZ from the early Saiyan Saga all the way through to late Buu saga, but not from Super, it's always just ep 5 and RoF arc. They were worse than Z, yes, doesn't change the fact that the rest of DBS is on par with DBZ for the most part and the best key scenes are way better animated.

I just dont realize why they just didnt remaster the scene from the special and put it on the show. Also to everyone saying the animation in dbz and dbs is bad. Neither of them are bad I mean my god people just want to find somethign to hate. For Dbz everything was hand drawn and it was pretty great animation for its time it just gets overshadowed by everything we have now. As for Super the only bad animation scenes were early in the series when toei didnt really care about it or think that the anime was going to go as long as it has.
