We have a genuinely heart breaking scene, piccolo knowing he can escape, but knowing it’s best if he stays and makes sure the dragon balls are destroyed He talks to gohan as his last words, before dying in the fiery explosion. A true masterpiece GT has put together, one of the good things they did. Super: OhH I’m gohan and I can’t defend myself come save me piccolo, I’m getting bodied by frieza’s first form and I’m not even putting up a fight OHHH I’LL SAVE YOU GOHAN (dead)

People seem to really like his death in GT but I don't think many people remember the context... he was pretty much gone for all of GT, only came back a single time to fight Baby-Gohan, but got blasted away IMMIDIENTLY and then randomly came back at the end of the baby saga just to sacrifice himself out of nowhere. Surely, the death scene itself is sad and holds a lot of weight in the grand total of the show, but in that moment, it was really meaningless and out of nowhere. Not trying to defend DBS though lmao, that was far worse.

the original is so much better, from character actin to lightin and direction. it’s literally perfect. the fact that trunks slowly walks over to gohans dead body, the rain pourin down on him, disguisin the tears streamin down his face. we see gohan layin face down in a puddle, his head submerged with the destruction of the city he couldn’t save around him with a flashin red light illuminatin his lifeless body. trunks rushes down to move gohan and hold his head close to him. the pan to the sky as trunks screams, like he’s yellin into the abyss, he’s clenchin his fists so tightly that he draws blood from his own palms, the exaggerated facial expression of trunks as he screams sells the intense pain and sadness he feels. the rage bubbles up, his pupils and irises are gone, nothin but the whites of his eyes are left. then he snaps. he achieves super saiyan and falls down to the ground, slammin his fists and crackin the ground beneath him. literally a perfect scene. the recreation in dragon ball super is fine, but very bog standard, the voice actin and music does the heavy liftin in the 2016 version

In the Super version, did Trunks have a bad itch in his hair or was he grieving there? The 1995 version is packed full of emotion. Super had its moments, but shucks... I'm beginning to see more that it was likely a cash grab for new toys or something. Quality and story wise, Super isn't good.

i will give super props to one thing. it canonized this scene as Trunks SSJ transformation since in the manga we never actually see when he gained that transformation. it was offscreen

I like how in the 1995 one he wasn't instantly crying but was in disbelief on how he was actually dead. Also his face in the puddle is just perfect

I always liked GT 🤷🏻‍♂️ i wanted to like Super but there's just too many design and character mistakes... I think the only significantly bad part of GT that stands out is the fucking Para Para brothers. I think the only good things to really come out of Super were Beerus and Whis, and Buu. We'll see if Moro ever gets animated... That was supposed to be good
