At the end of the day he was doing his job and he did what he needed to do to get it done. I will say tho, that the truth of how he got the job done is till the truth. Great interview and and display of how a boss should conduct themselves. Larry Jackson is not a hater and that’s admirable these days. It’s so easy for a lot of people who are deemed to have “cultural impact”to get triggered and get to gossiping. They always take the bait and small minds eat it up. What ever game gets dropped get shadowed by gossip. Larry doesn’t play that game. I’m glad I watched the whole podcast.
Dude is extremely intelligent and i respect him how hes trying to shape the music industry by getting the artist paid regularly. Everything outside of that he said a whole lot of nothing. Tap danced around every single question. Genius in PR relations. He really skated the Drake questions
He put himself right in the thick of things tho by opening with his career starting at Clive Davis crib and saying he knew he needed to sign with him from there in the late 90s. Didn't protest joe saying he knows everything that goes on in the music business. Said Joe would have needed the gatekeepers to stamp him being where he is now etc. That tells me he very much so was victim since he came in young with Clive but turned predator who kept and keeps the secrets, witnessed, participated, facilitated, orchestrated, enforced, hid, covered up etc a lot of messed up business practices, rtuals and abuse etc!! And he very much so was involved with and knew about diddy since diddy was one of Clive boy toys too! Dude just knows how to package and sell product which is respectable and knowledgeable for those of us that don’t wanna get tangled in the industry but wanna know how to make something shake on their own.
Joseph Anthony Budden, I watched this interview with the anticipation of you asking one of the only people on earth that could answer the age old question "What is the value of a stream". So disappointed in you bro. 😥😥 The esthetics was dope🔥🔥
When Larry spoke about how he is proud of certain people on his team for “fighting for the ball”, metaphorically, I couldn’t help but think who’s the opposition; the majors or the other players in different business sectors? Like what is the end goal? To get just as much power as the major labels along side the 1% artists (Drake and Usher) or to make music ( or rick Ross’s podcast lol) a much more popular resource for media manipulation? Just so many questions that I know will never be answered.
Fantastic interview. Joe Budden's questions gave way for great dialogue with Larry Jackson, always giving him time to speak. I've been fortunate to spend time with Larry throughout my career, finding our conversations insightful and a privilege. It's great to see this level of discussion online. As someone who recently started a TH-cam channel interviewing music executives like Troy Carter (Lady Gaga, CEO Venice Music) and Tyler Henry (Manager PARTYNEXTDOOR), I really value the open dialogue here. It’s much needed. And Shout out to Ian for EPing this. It’s got his fingerprint for sure. Appreciate you all, gents. "Each one teach one."
Joe this is you in your element. I love the music industry talk and wish you would do more niche episodes on industry specific information. Facts only. No speculation. Maybe a spin off of some sort that focuses only on industry dynamics and education for up and coming and current artist.
No he's not not culturally but if you want to say numbers wise when it compares to if someone who's at the age of 13 to 25 they'll use Spotify Faithfully with tunes and man to the current in recent music whereas the 50 plus crowd not
When he said more catalog then the 60s 70s and 80s he meant music period and he kept saying HITS.. Drake got more hits than the Beatles.. They are giving that man a bag
Larry Jackson hasn’t really explained how Gamma monetise differently to a record label apart from they pay artists weekly, and provide artists with predictive earnings. I’m sure they leverage Apple Music contacts for content sharing. It sounds like they have a 360 deal with the mention of Monetising podcasts, merch etc. Of course he won’t share the keys but I’m invested to do some digging. It’s obvious that Drake is a seed investor
Much respect to Larry but he’s describing things like digital distribution and weekly/monthly payments as if it’s some kind of ground breaking new technology.
I think he's saying that the way they're setting it up for artist is that they will be able to access funds weekly, bi monthly, monthly. He's giving different options. Its makes sense though. So many of them get advances and end up in the negative. I think his model will pay them in increments, which is pure profit. A paycheck from their earnings. Maybe it will decrease the amount of artist who go broke.
Larry is so shifty. Whenever he’s not being truthful, he looks on the floor or in the air to choose his words. That’s a peculiar tell. He knows what he’s doing. This interview is just PR for his company(not that I blame him) but he should stop talking like he’s so different from traditional labels. What’s the “tech” that makes gamma a technology company?
I agree whole heartedly. The agenda is clear and so is the desire to control the narrative for gain and benefit rather than for the sake of honesty, transparency, and over all being genuine.
You couldn’t have listened to him.. he said his company distribution tech, merch tech, pay software … like he talked in length about the things they provide from a tech standpoint
We know the answer. He has the first impression of being a nice guy but he has a sort of villain mastermind aura about him I could feel. Then Joe asked him that question that he straight up avoided and I got my answer.

I'm tired of hearing about these concepts of how the media divides, and mainstream manipulates, and there's a plant here, and an agenda there, etc etc. Take charge of your own life, use your own mind, make your own decisions, go against the grain, curate your own exposure, stop depending on these industries to expose you to what it is you want; it's lazy, think critically for yourself, shun what's destructive, seek out what's constructive, etc. Etc. This whole concept of complaint about what the gatekeepers and shepherds do to herd the sheep is pathetic. There will always be sheep, and they always be manipulated. We can't save them, let's worry about ourselves, and let's those who are asleep remain asleep. Most of them put forth NO effort to enlighten themselves, many more simply don't have the ability. Taking the accountability off of them and placing it on the "man" is entirely counter-productive and actually enables and perpetuates what it is you're trying to aleve. Ignorance is bliss to them. 'Less is more... there's plenty of us'

This was a glorified advertisement for Gamma, riddled with intellectual filibustering and PR censorship, not a genuine conversation. Larry mostly talked and Joe mostly listened while being used as a spring board for Larry to just keep talking.

As a fellow Jersey n!99@ i respect Joe craft this interview is DIFFERENT 🔥
Dude is extremely intelligent and i respect him how hes trying to shape the music industry by getting the artist paid regularly.
Everything outside of that he said a whole lot of nothing. Tap danced around every single question. Genius in PR relations. He really skated the Drake questions
Every question
If you actually thought he was going to answer questions like that, that’s on you😭
He put himself right in the thick of things tho by opening with his career starting at Clive Davis crib and saying he knew he needed to sign with him from there in the late 90s. They both came up together through the same door and mentor doing the same thing behind the scenes!
@@mahoganysweets67 I worked along side Larry. Took him to lunch to convince him to come to Arista when he was at KMEL and had other label options. I worked in A&R for Clive for 15 years. None of the S*ht you and others are saying about Clive or Larry is true. I was there. Larry was a young super intelligent sponge in which he learned sooo much and then used it to create ambition. He was fired by Sony for cause - not going to say what that was, but it was to the benefit of an artist. It kills me to see the unacceptable behavior of Puff bleeding over to other executives that are in no way associated in any of those things. Larry is a genius. Does he know how to play the game. JOE BUDDEN MAKE MORE MUSIC PLEASE ITS BEAUTIFUL
I see a lot of ppl saying he danced around questions and if you listened you got his answers … great interview Joe

This was such a beautiful conversation. This man is a genius and his will motivate you. The pleasure of being the creator in the background.
AYYYYE LARRY THE GOAT!! rest in paradise phil ❤ the familys here for it 👏🏽👏🏽💯
Much respect to Larry but he’s describing things like digital distribution and weekly/monthly payments as if it’s some kind of ground breaking new technology.
This is my point EXACTLY. He’s fooling no one & being in the good graces of Clive Davis it’s extremely side eye suspect
