      @@terryjones8155 omg YES EXACTLY! I haven't been a fan for 50 years as I haven't lived for that long yet 🙈 but I have been a Beatlemaniac for 25 years, started loving them when I was 13. I was in love with John Lennon then, today, since 2010, I became a die-hard fan of Macca 😍, he's my favorite Beatle now (plus solo carried plus Wings). But seeing those BEAUTIFUL videos of Caroline and her amazing and moving reactions and all of those interesting observations she makes and her authentic joy and enthusiasm makes me relive my first magical encounter with The Beatles ❤️❤️❤️

      The lyrics and melody don't leave any space to take a breath. Sing along and it will literally 'take your breath away' which is exactly the feeling Paul is trying to convey having just seen the face :) And then he's lost for words... reduced to humming or singing di-di-di-di'n'di. That didn't stay in the song because of laziness to complete the lyric, it's cos being speechless fits the mood perfectly. It's a fantastic song!

    Who doesn't like "I've Just Seen A Face?" It's one of my favorite Beatles songs. I guess there's no accounting for taste.
    "I'll Follow the Sun" John and Paul singing together is so beautiful. Love that pick.
    Really, any song you didn't pick could have made a top ten list. Great albums. Can't wait for more.
    I was thinking that you were going to pick "Mr. Moonlight" as your 'controversial' pick. THAT would have had fans in an uproar. I actually like that song more than most people. John's vocals are top notch.

    @zedxxx9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +185

    I don't think the issue is that people generally don't like "I've Just Seen a Face". The controversy is that the American label bastardized the Beatles albums and withheld that song from Help! and then used it as the album opener for Rubber Soul where it does not belong. Fortunately, you are listening to the proper UK versions of the albums with the track listings as intended. I've Just Seen a Face is a lovely song, but it was recorded months before Rubber Soul.

      Took me 1/3 of a lifetime or so to get that. We here in the states grew up with what the Capital Label, owned by the British EMI lol, gave us. Why didn't the EMI have control over Capital on that issue, I don't get it. Seems part of it was a strategy to get the most mileage out of American albums for more profit obviously. [in the beginning they thought the Beatles were a flash n the pan, [a short-lived money machine]. There was also the mentality that each album had to have about 2 hit songs included on the album to sell the album better even though we bought the singles. That equals 2 to 4 songs we already bought [depending whether the flip sides were on the album or on the next one, or not an any album]. Weird. USA producers/ engineers also put way too much reverb on the first few albums here. They just couldn't keep their sticky fingers off of the tapes...fixing something that wasn't broken. When I was older and British releases were finally available here, I bought some and went "Hey, this is different, now I know what they're complaining about." Footnote: We had two albums with a Hard Day's Night movie songs on them...Something New, the Capital; label, AND United Artists [Record Division of the movie company] which had the movie tunes, plus the George Martin instrumentals, jazzy orchestra stuff for the movie This Boy for the "Ringo on the loose" scenes, and 5/4 version of HArd Days Night {Grandfather character running around getting in trouble]...plus an unused And I Love Her arrangement....I really got to like that album becaus e the other songs had nothing to do with the movie experience. we had no clue there was a major Hard Days Night British Parlophone album with 6-7 extra songs we did not hear until Capital's Beatles '65 mish mash was released later. 😂 Amazing how the Beatles would remember while on tour here it's on an LP here in the USA and would announce the name of the American LP....the is evidence of that on several films. Wny did they bother? no one clould hear them anyway lol

      The hubris of Capitol Records was disgusting - they just wanted to extract as much money from the fans as possible. The Beatles hated them.

    • @OperationPhantom
      @OperationPhantom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Arguably though... (!) the US Rubber Soul is the best of the bastardizations (MMT excepted of course)... making it slightly more of an acoustic/folksy album.
      Also, the juxtaposition of the "innocence" of I've Just Seen a Face with Norwegian Wood and likewise on side 2 with It's Only Love and Girl, does work quite well...
      Plus the uniqueness of the false introduction extra of I''m Looking Through You! :)
      Not canon perhaps but... interesting.

    • @killingmewillnotbringbacky9177
      @killingmewillnotbringbacky9177 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      bastardized? doesn't belong? Dude the American Rubber Soul isn't Beatles VI or Something New. It's a pretty solid album. "I've Just Seen a Face" works perfectly as an opening track, better than Drive My Car. The intro lead with the acoustic guitars is so cool and totally surprises you if you're used to hearing a rocking opening to Beatles albums.

    It's fine! "I've just seen a face" is not controversial. It's damn fun and a beautiful song and I love that you can't really explain why. That's the 'mystery' of the Beatles. They can take the simplest elements and turn them into joyful or gentle or pure pop or hard rock or transcending or heart-wrenching melancholy - or any of those combined.... and later lots of complexity too... and it all hits you deep - in your heart and soul - and there are no words to explain it. Somehow these four boys had a synergy which just created magic, over and over again.

    I’ve never heard anyone say that they didn’t like “I’ve Just Seen a Face.” One of the things you might find interesting about the Rubber Soul album is that when The Beatles’ American record label, Capital Records, got ahold of it, they were very interested in its folk-rock aspects (because of how popular Bob Dylan and The Byrds had become) and put together a completely different version of Rubber Soul than the original British release. For starters, they grabbed two songs from the British version of Help! that they hadn’t released yet and one of them was “I’ve Just Seen a Face,” which they decided would be a great song to lead off their version of Rubber Soul. For once, they were right. The other song was “It’s Only Love,” which was another outstanding choice. I listen to both versions of the album regularly, but my favorite has always been the American release with that little bluegrass-inspired romp to begin the set. Brian Wilson also cited the American release of Rubber Soul as his primary inspiration for Pet Sounds. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on that classic 🙂

    Love your videos! I’m anxiously awaiting the rest! If I could make a couple of suggestions as to the order of the remaining reviews:
    First, I’d recommend reviewing the non-album singles BEFORE the albums they accompanied (A side then B side, and if it’s a double-A side, flip a coin). This will give you a taste what’s to come in the album. And it’s basically how Beatles fans experienced it, since even though the singles and associated LPs were often released at the same time, most people heard the singles first since they got instant airplay, whereas fans often weren’t able to listen to the album until they purchased it.
    Second, I’d change the order of some of the last few albums so they’re arranged by when they were recorded, vs. when they were released. Trust me, when you get to the end you’ll thank me. Also, pay attention to the cover art.
    So here’s what I’d recommend (S=single and LP=album):
    S: Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out (double-A side)
    LP: Rubber Soul
    S: Paperback Writer (A) / Rain (B)
    LP: Revolver
    S: Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane (double A)
    LP: Sgt. Pepper
    LP: Magical Mystery Tour
    LP: Yellow Submarine (out of release date order - recorded around the same times as Sgt. Pepper and MMT, but released after the White Album)
    S: Lady Madonna (A) / The Inner Light (B)
    S: Hey Jude (A) / Revolution (B) (sometimes considered double A)
    LP: The Beatles (aka the White Album)
    S: Get Back (A) / Don’t Let Me Down (B)
    S: The Ballad of John and Yoko (A) / Old Brown Shoe (B)
    S: Let It Be (A) / You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) (B)
    LP: Let it Be (out of order - recorded before Abbey Road, but released last)
    LP: Abbey Road (out of order - recorded last, but released second to last)
    Also, from here on out I might suggest paying attention to song sequence, and also the transition between songs.

      Not a bad idea. The only thing I’d add is on the Yellow Submarine album to skip the songs from the previous albums which you’ve already heard, and then skip all the George Martin filler that was recorded as background music for the movie. There’s really only 4 new songs.

      "This Boy" was also a beast when played live. There are a few examples of it here on TH-cam; the Morecambe & Wise Show version is especially good.

      @@kennethlatham3133 just read that "there's a place" and "this boy" are two of George's favorites - As Caroline reviews Revolver she mentions that it might be fun to dissect harmonies on a few Beatles songs and I think the aforementioned would be good candidates

    I enjoy your Beatles journey so much, can't wait for the new videos. Your reactions are so genuine and charming :)
    As a Beatles fan since my earliest years, I can't help but envy you a bit. I often wish I could erase my memory and listen to all these magical songs for the first time again.
    And you're giving me the closest thing to this sensation I ever get, probably. Thank you, sweet Caroline:)

    I love ‘I’ve Just Seen a Face.’ I don’t know what’s wrong with those people who said they didn’t like it.

    Caroline, you'd be a fabulous talkshow hostess. You're bright, funny, and very smart; I believe you'd bring out the best of people. That comment aside, I really love your reviews of the Beatles - who I saw in 1966 at Shea Stadium in New York. From where you are so far in the Beatles albums, you're about to move into an entirely new phase on your "journey" from Liverpool to history. Starting with Rubber Soul all music changed forever. Song quality improved and people strove to write and perform as well as the Beatles. It's been said of the Beatles by so many people (including Phil Collins) that if you weren't there at the time, it's really hard to understand just how important the Beatles were. Starting with Rubber Soul and on to Abbey Road you will absolutely understand why and why were are all here reliving our first impressions of the only band to sell about a billion records worldwide.

    Notice the thumbnail from Caroline's listen of "Beatles For Sale" says "wow" and it provided three of her top ten songs, more than any of the other four albums.
    I'm fairly certain not one person was surprised that "Yesterday" topped the list.

    Good to see that Caroline's videos on the Beatles are finally getting the views they deserve. These are not reaction videos only. They're also analysis from a musician's point of view.
