One of the best honest reviews of the Akai MPK 249. watching this 9 years later. Its bizar that Akai didnt update the firmware of this beloved MIDI keyboard. It is still sold on Amazon and several other stores. That means a lot to me. Bad keyboards are not sold anymore NEW after almost 10 years !
Very informative! Been excited about this one and it helps to hear the smaller details about the instrument from a user, since I’m looking to buy one for my studio setup.
Thank you for making this video. I've been looking to buy a Midi Keyboard and I could not find a good video that will explain in-depth like this. Good work man. I'm getting one of these hopefully sooner than later.
You can actually chop samples with the mpk249, just gotta use the Mpd32 template for some reason...Just saw that in a video.... lol I know u prob know now, this 4 years old...
Great review, going to use it to help me and my son learn this unit, just picked it up today. Side note from a Content Creation standpoint. Watch the video back and do a hash mark tally for every time you say "ahh" and "umm". I used to teach and do a lot of public speaking, and video content. It's ok to give yourself time to speak, breath, and think. Don't need to rush, because the info you give is very good info compared to other stuff I've seen out there.
Great video…. I know I’m late to the party, can you explain on how to save your preset. Like the pad color for instance. Every time I set it up like I want them, it never saves the next time I turn the controller back on?
thank you for a knowledgeable review! will the 249 be good for a reason and logic user as well as other DAWs i.e. does a musicians preferred DAW matter in selecting my midi keyboard option ?
@spoonelli Hi. I am having a problem with my new MPK261 midi controller. I've noticed you have an MPK249 and i want to know if you have the same problem. A few days ago i noticed that all the pads and all the 61 keys are triggering notes (in my DAW - Live / in any DAW) 1 octave lower than it should. Important: none of the two up/down transpose buttons are activated and the "Octave" and "Transpose" settings unde the "Edit" menu are on "0". Exemple: - Hit one of the 16 pads - now hit "Edit" menu and see to which note is that pad assigned - now hit that pad one more time and in the same time look at the "piano roll" inside your DAW and see which note is triggered. If the problem with my MPK261 is universal, than you should see that it triggers a note 1 octave lower than it should (than what it says under "Edit" menu). The same happens with all 61 keys. The middle "C" on MPK261 should trigger "C3", but it triggers "C2" actually. I wonder also if the 25 keys MPK users have the same problem. Looking forward for your answer. Thanks!
did you ever get a reply from the internet or other sources ? I am interested to buy a brand new MPK 261 in 2024 with 3 years guarantee. Do you still use your MPK 261 ?
+Luis Carrion +Luis Carrion You have keyboard curve (Linear. Expansion 1 & 2) & sensitivity (1-10) settings. Pad Threshold, velocity curve & sensitivity. CV Gate Out to the sequencer & keyboard. These are in the global settings. Gives you a little more control over the other controllers on the market
I'm wondering if you know how to set the keyboard's lowest key to C1 (MPK 261). Out of the box is set to C0 and for what I need it is way to low. Hope you can help!
Very nice video man. I'm really thinking of getting this but your comment about time clock not syncing to DAW made me wonder. Do you mean I can't sync it with let's say my DDJSX time clock? I was hoping to use this LIVE to trigger sounds/loops and use the keyboard to play on top of songs stuff like brass/piano/sax. Is that possible?
Dam dude that's the best review I've seen for this model. Thanks so much. I bought it last month and I love it but I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the features. This helped a lot. I also picked up the MPC Live which is sick. I'm also still trying to learn it as well. I would imagine this controller would work great with the Live? Would you just plug in with a midi cable or would you recommend using a computer to get the most out of the set up?
I really enjoyed your overview. Just getting into it, so much of what you said is beyond me at the moment, but it will be very helpful.I look forward to see your other feedback and reviews. One suggestion I'd offer is that you speak very quickly, so at times it's hard to keep up or to catch all you're saying. If you were able to speak a bit more slowly, it would be helpful for folks like me.Thanks! Very helpful.
I have the old mpk 25 but the pads are shit, they stick so much you can't do rolls for shit. I think I'm going to try this one out though cause I really like the keyboard on akai, the pitch bend and mod wheel feel great. I got the mpc live awhile back just to fuck around with it and then I returned it but the pads on that were awesome. Do you know if the pads on this one is similar to live? looks like it has the same color scheme with the pads as live does.
I just bought a mpk249 and have a bad problem! I don't have blue hand icon in ableton so cant focus on a device or effect! when I turn an assigned knob all parameters related to that knob change all together! plz help!
Nice video, but how on earth is possible to make a keyboard to transmit different midi channels at once? Not one at a time, or making split zones with multiple midi channels? Bought this thing and cant use it as a master controller{{

Transport controls don't work and knobs do not correspond. Before I start assigning them manually I just want to figure out why.

Maybe it's a little bit too late, but MIDI Controllers don't make any sound on their own, you need to have any kind of DAW like FL Studio or Ableton to assign sounds to them
It doesn't as it's a midi controller and not a standard keyboard. Midi controllers are likened to "TV Remotes" for producer software and Digital Audio Workstations. (DAWs). If you're looking for a keyboard model that has both plit key functions and can be used as a midi controller, I recommend the Yamaha Motif series. Although more expensive, they are really nice pieces of equipment. I hope this information was informative for you, Have a blessed one! :)

yes...but you'd control that in your software DAW.
Hello, this model have a split keys function ?, Thanks
It doesn't as it's a midi controller and not a standard keyboard. Midi controllers are likened to "TV Remotes" for producer software and Digital Audio Workstations. (DAWs). If you're looking for a keyboard model that has both plit key functions and can be used as a midi controller, I recommend the Yamaha Motif series. Although more expensive, they are really nice pieces of equipment.
I hope this information was informative for you, Have a blessed one! :)
So it is not a stand alone keyboard?
No aftertouch??
Thanks Great Video!
Thanks!
