This is probably a dumb question, but couldn't you just set a zero key between the two keys, and then slide it towards whichever one you want to emphasize?

It's not a dumb question! You can absolutely do that instead of using Tween Machine. Adding Tween Machine to your workflow will only save you a couple seconds of work (because it's easier to finesse than sliding keys around). But when you have a tight deadline, and you're using Tween Machine hundreds of times a day, those couple of seconds start to add up!
At the end of the day, choose the method you are more comfortable with :)

This is interesting because the way I was taught was going to whatever "frame" you'd like to favor. Click "Middle Mouse Button" and drag it to whatever frame number you would like to be in, favoring set key and press "S." The End.
I was always confused as to what "Tween Machine" was but that's pretty much it.

TweenMachine is a plugin you have to download separately. Once it's in Maya you can open it by typing tweenMachine; in the script editor & hitting enter
