I think it's better than soul because it has more of an emotional impact for me, and it's also more creative in my opinion. Soul is too generally relatable, without touching on something emotionally deep, it's more on an existential level, that it leaves a kind of emptiness in what it reflects upon, at least for me, but I love the overall message.

While it's obviously got a good message for kids, 'Soul' honestly feels like a film more geared towards adults who've felt let down by their aspirations for life. The film just speaks to me in a way that other Pixar films haven't so far. Having reached my 30s, I guess I just empathise with Joe's existential questions about his life choices and what they've amounted to.

    • @thefriendlygamer2221

    • @thomasmuscat6527

@@thefriendlygamer2221 Very true. They've had stories about growing up, mid-life crises, art, mentoring, parenting, grief and moving on. Personally, I just feel like 'Soul' might be the first one where the balance *could* - for better or worse - be more towards adults for once. Maybe it's just the impression I get from reviewers saying it was a little bit less obviously kid-friendly (i.e. less obviously funny or flashy, I think) than past Pixar films; or that I see too much of myself in Joe and the journey he goes through (probably because for him it involves looking *back* on his life). Don't get me wrong, its central message -
“Your passion is not your purpose” - is still one kids should be told too.

I REALLY liked Soul-yeah, it was more heady and less of an emotional punch than inside out or Coco, but after my first viewing I felt I really needed it. SPOILER ALERT: at the climax we see 22 beating herself (themself?) up with the words of all her mentors, who were “great people” by most measures. She didn’t feel like she could live life on earth because she didn’t think she was worthy, special, or had some great purpose to live for and drive herself towards.
As a kid in the 90s, raised by movies that featured special people and drilled into my head that I needed to follow my dreams, find my passion/purpose, and become SOMEBODY, I have a deep internalized need to fulfill some vague potential. Now that I’m 30, I’ve grown increasingly dissatisfied with my life. Thanks to struggles with ADHD, and some toxic habits I am nowhere near that Special SOMEONE I feel I have to become. Like 22, or even Joe, I beat myself up for not chasing a passion, pursuing my vague dreams, and living ‘the right way’ like Ghandi or Muhammad Ali or Abe Lincoln. 22 is in the same space I find myself in very often.
Then Joe comes in, and shows her that to qualify for life on earth, you don’t need some purpose or calling, you just need to live. We all get that dignity and privilege. Walking, star gazing, and pizza aren’t purposes, they’re just regular old living, and that’s what we are hear on earth to do. This movie encourages me to not continue to beat myself up for not being somebody, but just to pursue LIFE, and enjoy its ups and downs, my connections to other people, good food, a good nap, the bird, trees, sky and everything in between. I think this movie is a healthy salve for a generation that was told to “be special, dammit”, and raised on too many heroes who taught us that life is about becoming Something special, rather than just... being.

I’m glad this movie helped. As a massive self-depricator, scene with Twenty-Two repeating how she (they?) isn’t worthy of enjoying life hit hard. It perfectly encapsulates that feeling of despair and anger, and it was validating seeing that shown in a Pixar film.

I love the message of the movie. You don't have to find your spark or your purpose in pursuing a dream. Your purpose is just to live. It's okay if you don't accomplish your dreams. You can still enjoy your life.
Soul 22 is a literal catch-22. 22 doesn't see or understand the purpose or joys of life until she lives it.
The movie does a nice job of showing a panic attack with 22 solely focused on everything that was negatively said to her.

Ah man, this film made me full on ugly cry. Acknowledging that your passion doesn't have to be your purpose or the thing that keeps you going is something I personally and I know so many other people struggle (particularly in the creative world because at school you’re often classed as the ‘creative kid’ or ‘nonacademic type’). That when you are lost either through being consumed by your passion / work or even just lost from not knowing what to do just having the passion to live and be present can be enough to get you through that moment. There is so much pressure to measure your sense of purpose in life through your the success in your work. How far you get up the ladder, how much money you make, your lifestyle. So much so you overlook the journey and once you get there, after putting so much into it and dreaming of it for so long, it's not as fulfilling as you thought it would be. This movie hit hard. It's such a beautiful thing to see the world through the eyes of a child and it can help bring that enjoyment back. Seeing all the small amazing things we take for granted on a daily basis. Just do what you love doing, enjoy the time you've got and do what you can to live to the fullest no matter how small it may seem because even the small things will amount to something. I know this doesn't solve everything for everyone, but I remember being in a really bad place and I had a moment very similar to the scene when the seed falls into his hand. It's such a brilliant movie and I'm so glad that kids are watching this. They will pick up on these things, they are a lot smarter and more intuitive than people give them credit for.
Please react to Inside Out, you'll enjoy it if you liked this!

Very important in the age of people becoming a commodity (based on personality, image or status). Rather than *having* an experience of life, there is so much encouragement (and pressure) to simply accumulate things just to *have* them in your life. (And then recieve validation for them). To me, the movie was about the journey. It would ruin the message, in my opinion, if we got to see what Joe ended up doing and who 22 turned out to be. That's the reason we don't get to know her spark either, I think. It was about living in the moment, not fighting for the next big thing. "That's just regular old living" seems to be the overall message. 22 didn't want to live until she got to experience those small moments - a good meal after you've been starving (pizza), the love a family member (the spool), hearing good music and wanting to spread joy (the bagel). The ending reflects the message - it's not about where we end up, but about what we did along the way.

    1. I hate Disney trailer and ads, because they make all their films look for kids. Even the next movie Kaya and the last dragon doesn't really make me hyped to watch it, *But*
    2. I love this movie. It's the exact type of movie with the right message so many of kids, teens and young adults (like me) need to hear and take to heart. Living life is enough. You can have passions, or not, it's your choice. You can make yourself great, or just live a nice humble life. You can do both, neither and that's all fine. I love that message.

Add in the fact that most kids born after the 70s were introduced to Star Wars via VHS tapes and I personally think Star Wars, while a cinematic juggernaut, could be just as (or even more) effective at home / on TV.

  • @jimjimcherie

So how I interpreted the movie:
There is no grand purpose for most of us, there is no grand meaning of life, most of us won't do something that will put us in history books. So many people wait for their grand purpose to be happy, they're always waiting for the next thing, for that dream job, that person, "I can't wait for the weekend! I can't wait for the trip! I'll sure be happy then!"
Life is about living. Most of the time, it is in the most mundane things that we find joy. People are always wanting, the lost souls are the people so full of desire they get lost. There's a poem by Robert Frost called "Fire and Ice", it goes "some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice, but from what I've tasted of desire I stand with those who favor fire, but if I have to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice." Desire is one of the most destructive forces on Earth, we want we want we want, so much, that we're never happy. Life isn't about finding "your thing" most of us won't have that, life is about being alive.
There is a quote that you will recognize in the future if you read this comment, but it goes:
"You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want."
