3:32 - You should take the remaining distance to the wall, divide by 2 and add half the width of a tile. That way, you don't have any tiles that are smaller than half a tile. You'll end up with one row less of full tiles, but your border tiles will be larger. It gives a much better look.
Bc your edges of the tiles may need to be cut, or may not be exactly on point, so to say, so taking the moulding off before installing- makes it so that when you put it back on, over the tiles, it gives it a seamless look! DEFINITELY a MUST! Trust me!
Same reason for removing baseboard before installing hardwood floors and floor tiles. The end results look much cleaner and professional since the cuts can be jagged and messy up against the wall, the baseboard completely covers all the miscuts when reinstalled
I don't fully see the reason why the cornice was removed. Surely the faux tiles can be butted to it during installation. It seems now there are many crevices for bugs and critters to hide between the newly installed cornice and faux tiles.
Glad you said that. I 'm not carpenter, but that's just what I thought. I also wonder if they bothered to at least free cycle, sell, or donate the cornice they unnecessarily torn down, rather than sending it to a landfill.
First of all I wouldn't have removed the crown molding. Not sure if that's the very end result or if that's right after installation. Regardless, I always would finish a job like this by filling in gaps with joint compound or one of my best friends, DAP adhesive caulk!
Love this work. Question. In this and another video you did I noticed a sliver of space between the ceiling and crown molding. Can that be calked? Also would taking the ceiling right up to the edge alleviate the bit of space and need for calking?
builders are becoming cheaper and cheaper by the decade if you like good sturdy construction than buy an older home and dont let people like him inside
Doesn’t make sense to remove the molding. The panels aren’t a deep profile one. Just add a small cove mounding where the tiles but the crown. One caulked and paint it would look good.
Just about the time I trusted you and then you said was going to be lust math Tigo understand the artist mind shuts down all of a sudden the first math equation made more sense. I say this lovingly thanks for making the video
A Starbucks store put up metal textured ceiling tiles after a remodel. The tiled floor and the store noise created such reverb it literally chased customers out of the store after numerous complaints. Be aware of acoustic issues.
I think he did right to go up to the walls, rather than cut it short up to the existing molding. Also, this way the new crown molding will hide some of those smaller edge pieces as well.
I did the same, I throw stuff the least I can. He could have butted the ceiling squares to the bottom of the actual crown moulding also saving a lot of time and time is money.
Metal tiles dont put off toxic smoke if there is a fire for one. Metal can also be manipulated to have a desired patina for some cool effects. Metal tiles are real metal not knock offs.
Heres the thing! Some people just like metal ceilings because its a friggen ceiling and the tiles look amazing! When I make a transaction at a store, I could care less if they have a metal ceiling and then when you go to tap your card they switch it to another area as if thats some type of cool play! Seriously disfunctional! Having striaight work goes a long way! The weird additives are unessisary! Awesome video here!!!!!! All those things affect other areas when some people just want to produce quality!
@8:52 editing needs a lesson, that crown molding is not finished and that was a problem, why not some decorative molding on top to finish edges instead of tearing down the molding...too much work
He lost my confidence when he took down the crown molding. This guy must be trying to sell that glue-on crown molding too. What do you do when you want to take it down and paint the ceiling? Yep, tear down the molding again.
Omg I built houses for a living and this was horrible to watch. He was just running up his bill. The crown moulding should have stayed up with just a piece of moulding to cover, if even needed.

I cannot believe y ripped down that real wood molding and glued styrofoam up. I mean cmon u are supposed to be upping the value of your property, not cheapening it. All u had to do was take little care and repaint old stuff.
He really didn’t need to take off the crown molding. Waste of time, increased cost, messy. 1\4 inch inside cove of same material works well, looks great as you can’t really see it. He’s old school, which is fine, just too costly.

why not just use real made in USA tin ceiling tiles? 2' by 2' is about 20 dollars and it s not plastic made in china. mine came from American tin ceilings.
Omg my eye twitched when he broke the crown molding. I reused mines! Saves a ton of money. Just use a little bit of paint to freshen it and voila!
Barbara Tran hi
Oh my goodness YES! Mine too. He basically broke real wood to then put up, what is basically, foam.
i did that exact thing. i had a sand a little bit but saved some bucks. didnt have to worry about fittings etc.
@@carmay3600 seriously what an idiot he would have been better off not even taking down the crown and cutting the tiles to fit

Do these ceiling tiles not cause a fire hazard? I remember the polystyrene ceiling tiles ,in the 70s ,were banned for being a fire hazard .
Amazing, and no risk of fire.

Very impressive look. I've seen the polystyrene crown molding used several times now. Looks so easy to work with. Any tradeoffs from wood or PVC?
Good job! Looks awesome😊

You have to scrape it off with a 4-6 inch putty knife until it's down to the flat ceiling. Then sand the ceiling smooth and wipe dust off.
Same question but was hoping to avoid that scraping work :(
