Where do the animals come from?
Both buffaloes slaughterhouses procure their supply from allover the country, mostly from Punjab and UpperSindh, which arrive in trucks carrying up to 35 cowsand buffaloes at a time. Within walking distance fromthe Landhi abattoir is the Perhi Ground where theanimals exchange hands from the vendors to thetraders who buy the stock to be slaughtered. Themarket is set up twice every 24 hours - in theevening before the night shift and early in themorning for the day shift. The traders who buy theseanimals then hand them over to the local marshalswho look after the animals until the gates of thekamaila open.
The nearby cattle farms also sell their animals at thePerhi. "if a buffalo or cow gives milk [whose marketvalue is] less than its daily food expenditure, it mustgo to the slaughterhouse"' explains Muhammad Moosa, a resident of Sajawal who works at a cattlfarm near the abattoir. Moosa and his three other
colleagues milk 300 cows and buffaloes at the farthree times a day. "The owner cannot afford to keethe animal if its milk production drops. n It just has 1go, he says.
Slaughter and examination
When the gates are opened, people take their animalsinside the buffalo slaughterhouse after paying thegovernment-prescribed fee of Rs65 for each buffaloand cow and Rs13 for goats and sheep. "Althoughhealthy animals are slaughtered in the kamaila, thereshould be some veterinary doctors to examine theanimals,' suggests Mohammad Ahsan, who gets fivebuffalos slaughtered daily. A medical examination ofanimals and meat is a pre-requisite according to theKMC by-laws. However, Dr Ali shares that there areonly two doctors stationed at the city abattoir inLandhi - one for each shift - whereas there shouldbe at least 12 of them. There is no post-slaughterexamination of the animals either. Similarly, sincethere is no buffalo laboratory at the slaughterhouse, the vetstake liver and blood samples of randomly selectedanimals for examination at the laboratory in Bhainscolony during the outbreak of a virulent disease.

Thepipes have strong iron hooks on which legs are hungto be washed. The KMC provides an annual licence tobutchers for a nominal fee of Rs100, most of whomhave acquired the skill from their forefathers. Thekamaildar charges Rs200 per cow or buffalo, a pricethat can be reduced to Rs150, depending on thenumber of animals that are to be slaughtered
