I have been a major Sonic fan since the '90s. I'm a huge fan of Tails and yes you can play alone as him. I used to play Tails over and over again and I never got tired of the Sonic games. I could play them over and over even now. I remember when Sonic 3 and Knuckles came out I walked all the way to the mall to get it which was quite a walk for me about an hour. I had saved up my money all throughout the summer as a young teen and I couldn't wait to get that game. I also got a Tails plush with the reservation! The guy at the GameStop was so nice and he was like hey do you know we have plushies too? I just about freaked out when he said he still had some of them left for Tails. I wonder even now what happened to that plush? LOL I grew up in the 80s so all of this stuff is big and nostalgic to me including the old Mario games. I absolutely love being able to play all the Sonic games on my new Nintendo switch lite. I hadn't played games for a long time and then I was too tempted to buy that little handheld system lol. I'm also a major Kirby fan. Do you like Kirby games? Oh another game that was back from the day it was the Pikmin games! And now I reserved a copy of Pikmin 4 lol.
Could you play Sonic CD and S3&K in Sonic Origins? It has opening cinematics and another one in the post credit scenes. In the post credit scene of Sonic 2 they show an animation of the Death Egg falling to angel island (The Island where S3&K takes place)
If you're going to play Sonic 3 Knuckles you should do the true ending. the true end of this game is achieved by getting the Chaos Emeralds or also with the Super Emeralds

That IS Mecha Sonic, just a different model. Sonic CD takes place before Sonic 2, so it's likely that since Metal was so easily beaten, Eggman wanted to make a stronger version, and the version in 2 is a prototype of the one in Sonic 3.
