Neon tetras have a host of health issues that cause a short lifespan. The are also notorious fin nippers. The look-alike cardinal tetra doesn’t have health issues and is not a fin nipper.
before i get a bunch of neons for my 30gal i wanted to get like 5 or 6 n put em in an 8gal- i just wanna see if they are right for me before getting like 20! but is that okay? cause i know they prefer schools of like 15-20 and obviously that wont fit in a little 8gal
Yes 5 or 6 in an 8gal is fine as long as there arent other fish in the 8gal. Make sure that you have adequate filtration too, and its always best to have live plants to help with the nitrogen cycle. Good luck! They are a great fish!
Hang on filters work fine, just make sure that the intake won't allow babies to get sucked in. We also always advise it is better to have plants when trying to raise fry. It will give them places to hide.
