- Hello everyone :) I am going to bring you along today while I create some stencils, and let you know some of the things I learned along the way :) tfw, and I hope you all have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I created this video with the TH-cam Video Editor ( / editor ) - ตลก
I love the idea of using the plastic dividers as stencils and having the paper of what the stencil looks like stored with it. I also love keeping the paper template design you used to draw out what ended up being cut. The idea of putting the paper under glass and cutting on the glass is brilliant! So much goodness was packed into this video.
I in no way intend to sound off putting; that said, I kinda wish I lived close enough to you and all my favorite crafters so we can craft together and when I’m stuck for ideas (or have too many) and don’t know where to start I could just mosey on over to one of your houses to make something with you. 💖

I know this is an older video, but I did feel compelled to let Utube know how much I loved it; it is not old to me. I have something like your tool with all kinds of tips. I found it while cleaning my mom's house after her passing. So now I know what and how to use some of the tips. I am quite excited. I haven't made many stencils because cutting all the curves with a craft knife is just not in my cup of patience. I am so excited to know how to use my fancy tool! Thank you Amy. I, like so many other viewers were looking for ideas on how to make stencils without expensive materials and while I found a few ideas, I have to say yours is the best. Also it was not until you said that you keep your stencils in a binder that I remembered I have a ton of store bought ones that I put in a binder years ago. So now all I need is the cutter. ( I have a craft knife but want a cutter too) Thanks so much.

Thank you so much! I was trying to use the heavier weight plastic for the same reasons you mentioned (lots of ragged mess), so I am glad to know that the thinner plastic works well.

+myserenitycrafts Hi Sara :) Thank you so much for the nice comment :) You will have to let everyone know how the fuse tool works for this :) It is quite a bit cooler, so if it works, it would give you more working time without any extra melted spots. If you stop with this one you have a hole where you stop, but if you keep moving or lift it off the plastic, it works great :) tfw, and Have an Outstanding Day :) amy

This is so cool...thanks Amy, I didn't know you could buy a stencil cutter tool, never heard of them before, looks a pretty handy bit of kit though, probably won't be available in the uk but still good to know you can make your own with a wood burner tool...think I have one of those somewhere but it's only a really cheap one so may not work so good for this. Thanks for the great stencil tutorial! This topic came up in a discussion with my sister and I (crafter, artist extraordinaire (my sister.)) I have the versa tool (solder iron/wood burner/hot knife/cutter tool) and my family got me a Silhouette cutter for Christmas, which I haven't gotten to set up due to son's and personal health. This video makes the stencil cutting process seem easier, and fairly immediate results for simple ideas. I could do them faster your way. I got about 7 tips for my versa tool, but not this curved stencil cutter. I need to find one. I do use the heated exacto knife though.
Time to get my Silhouette set up though. I have intricate patterns floating in my head I need to get digital, and press a button to cut. Thanks!
PS: What programs do you recommend for designing things like mandalas, borders, etc? Thanks again!

Hello Sandi :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I use the Plaid stencil cutter, and it works well :) The only thing I would suggest is to not use a wood burner to try and cut stencils, they are too hot :) I also use an razor knife to cut stencils and that works well too, I have a video on that also :) tfw, and Have an Outstanding Day :) amy

Hi Amy that tool looks very similar to the fuse tool , i wonder if the pointy tool on that would do this. Very clever idea TFS Hugs Sue
+JustSue Au Hi Sue :) I don't have the fuse tool, so I am not sure. I do thing the fuse tool is a lot cooler in temperature but I think it would still melt through the plastic if you just went a little slower :) If you have a fuse and try it, you should let us all know how it worked :) Tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Ok Amy, I got one of the stencil cutters, and did not have good success. So I have been cutting with a knife. I need to try the stencil cutter again.

Hello Tina :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) If you dont have glass, you can put a cutting board underneath, and cut the plastic right on top of the paper. The cutter glides on the glass better than the paper, but it still works fine :) just make sure you do not leave the cutter sitting on the paper :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy

i think i really need this burn cutter! i can trace my number stencils & cut out portraits with ease. i bet it will cut right through soft flexible polypropylene ground liner or thin shower pan liner. Hope it doesnt warp the matterial to bad on me. easiest i found a knife will cut.

Would it be easier and faster to copy the image on the transparency with an inkjet or laser printer depending on the film used? I use this method rather than tracing cause it's like drawing it twice. Just wondering. Sam
Hello Sam :) I am not sure if my printer would print on plastic, but you could try it and see if it works for you :) I put the drawing under a piece of glass and put my plastic on top of the glass so I don't have to trace it on my plastic, and I won't have the black lines on my plastic when I am done, because I never stay on the lines exactly, lol :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy

Thanks for this video, but isn't there a way to be able to save & reuse the stencil that you took the dragon flies from? Is there a way for the loose pieces to be put back together for that outer stencil to be usable? What type of plastic sheeting is this?

Cuz i was thinkin of gettin a pic frame from the dollar tree&use that but i dont think that would work lol
It is a 1/4 inch piece of glass with sanded edges, I got at a thrift store. I think it came off a glass top end table :) The glass from a picture frame would probable be too thin, and the edges would be sharp, but you can try it and be very careful not to break it. tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy

This cutter machine can I use it to make stencil on mdf wood or plastic only?
Hello Sara :) This stencil cutter is not hot enough to use as a wood burner, you would have to get a tool that says wood burner on the package :) A wood burning tool is to hot to cut thin plastic for a stencil, because it melts it too fast. Hello Sara :) This cutter would work for plastic, and fun foam, but it doesn't cut paper, and I don't think it would cut felt either. The hotter wood burner might cut paper and felt, but I think you could risk starting a fire with that tool and those items. I would use a die cutting machine or scissors to cut paper and felt :) I hope that helps :) and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy

Hello Kim :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) You can buy different kind of tips at the craft stores, but a wood burner get too hot unless it has different settings. This is a stencil cutter, and it is cooler than a wood burner. When I first started I used a wood burner, and it was very frustrating because it would burn holes instead of lines in places, and I would have to try and start over, I never had luck with a wood burner. Hello :) Thank you for the nice comment :) I do not draw that well, it just takes practice, and if you want to draw something on paper and you think you cant draw it by hand, find a picture in a book and trace around it, crafting is supposed to be fun, so find the easiest way to do it and enjoy your crafting :) tfw, and Have an Outstanding Day :) amy

Hello Maryam :) In the USA you can pick them up at Michaels, and the other craft stores probably carry them too :) If you are not in the states, this stencil cutter is made by Plaid, you may be able to look them up online or maybe Ebay. I hope that helps :) tfw, and Have an Outstanding Day :) amy

You may never see this question as this video is from 2016... But do you sell the stencils you cut??? I would purchase a bunch of them!! I just don't have time to try to cut them myself w/ a wedding coming up and handwriting all the invites, plus it's a destination wedding, lots of cost for good old mom! I do believe even though I am very crafty, I couldn't do the awesome job on stencils that you can do... My skills lie in numerous other crafts, not drawing like you can. Anyway, if you see this and can decide if this is something tmyou would do please let me know, thank you for your time !! 😊
Hello Marcella :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Wow, you have a lot on your plate :) Good luck with your daughters wedding, I know how much work that is, I did both of my daughters weddings, and it was exhausting, but so satisfying :) I am sure it will be wonderful :) Yes, I am going to sell some of my stencils after the first of the year :) I have had so many people ask for them but, because with the hand cut stencils they are never exactly the same, and some people don't like that so I have bought a scan and cut to scan my own designs and be able to cut them all the same :) Keep you eyes open for a video in January, probably around the middle of the month :) Thank you for your interest :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy

when i use my stencils the paint smudges!!😒
Hello Christina :) If you are having a problem with your paint smudging, you are using to much. You should try using a makeup sponge and pounce it in the paint then pounce it off a bit before you start pouncing it through your stencil. If you use a brush you also should pounce up and down, if you rub a brush across the stencil the paint will go under the stencil.
