  • The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a French multirole, single-engine fourth-generation jet fighter manufactured by Dassault Aviation. It was designed in the late 1970s as a lightweight fighter to replace the Mirage III for the French Air Force (Armée de l'Air). The Mirage 2000 evolved into a multirole aircraft with several variants developed, with sales to a number of nations. It was later developed into the Mirage 2000N and 2000D strike variants, the improved Mirage 2000-5 and several export variants. Over 600 aircraft were built and it has been in service with nine nations.

I highly recommend DCS Mirage. The training missions are really well done and they merge nicely with the campaign that is included with the module. The fact that your commander speaks with a French accent really adds to the feeling of being a real Mirage fighter pilot. There are some bugs but they are not show-stoppers in my opinion.

One of the big selling points for the M53 is that it's the first french fighter engine with a FADEC. The test pilots were aparently fawning all over it, since it vastly reduced pilot workload, and much much improved start up time and procedure.
Fun story, the ground support 2000 D should never have existed. It was developed in emergency from the nuclear 2000N to fill in for the delayed rafale.
Also, only the 2000-9 (not in french service...) is really multirole. Yes there are variants for air combat (2000-C) ground support (2000-D), nuclear strike (2000-N) and badass air combat (2000-5) but each airframe cannot do anything else than its designated mission.
If you want true multirole in french service, see rafale.

When the French designed the plane, they didn´t know how big of an impact it would impact. Israel was a perfect example of such, Mirage fighter-bombers destroyed entire Air Forces in a matter of hours, they teared the Arabian skies in suport of ther troops performing thousands of sorties helping wining wars countless times over. In South Africa, they countered the communism forces of Angola and Cuba with extreme eficiency helping defend the country. Today, the Mirage continues to serve as a bigger brother in the French Air Force where it also performed several combat missions. The Mirage is trully an extraordinary fighter that shaped the face of air combat for ever

  • @thomasborgsmidt9801
    @thomasborgsmidt9801 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The main design decision that parts the Mirage 2000 from the F-16 is: F-16 used BOTH a new engine AND relaxed stability. The french decided to opt for just the relaxed stability - considering the Snecma M53 as quite ambitious enough over the Atar on the F1.
The more daring approach of the F-16 could have gone wrong, hence GD was prepared to "derelax" the stability by moving the wing forward one frame on the fuselage. Indeed the first batch of F-16's was too reactive and needed a larger tail to keep things in control.
The F-16 also opted for a much simpler airintake which limited max. speed.
The french obviously thought the semicircular intake as a well understood technology.
So the french did was to suit the airframe to the engine (which you allways do). I consider the discussion of one versus two engines as a bit of a throwback to the first jet engines when engines were a lot less reliable.
The Mirage 2000 is/was not the absolute cutting edge, but it was the bet, that contained fewer risks.
In the event: Few of the F-16's fly/flew as airdefence/airsuperiority - most of them are bombtrucks - and capable trucks.
The Mirage 2000 is predictably short on range, hence the refuelling probe. But again: In this day and age the F-16 is also short on range.
The present demands range and deployability - preferably without airial refuelling - hence my argument for the F-35 for Canada. Canada is NOT going to have an aircraft carrier. Why? Because Canada does not NEED an aircraft carrier.
It is much cheaper and easier to come to terms with Nato allies that can provide adequate ground facilities so you have the capability but not the cost.

      I disagree with the comments:
      1) For Canada it means that the same aircraft can perform both air defence and and ground attack (if any idiot should be stupid enough to invade Nunavut) - and it allows Canada to give and recieve reinforcements - and have fewer air stations.
      2) If you see the Norwegean F-16's recieving refuelling from the dutch tankers in Trident Juncture 2018: Despite having large external tanks the F-16's are really short on range with any significant load.
      3) As to the European scenario: Well the point is that hostile aircraft should have died long before reaching Danish/German or whatever airspace. You forget the airspace over Sweden and Finland.
I have surmised that under Trident Juncture there is a Danish Frigate in the sea between Sweden and Finland - just in case the Russians should do anything stupid.
Point being: In a crowded airspace you have a line of air defence missiles first to cause losses and break up any form of enemy formation.
If Stockholm is to be nuked - well, the prevailing wind is westerly, so who cares?
      4) What aircraft of Russian extraction is going into a dogfight with the F-35? Over Nunavut??? or Northern Alberta for that matter.
I'm not saying the Typhoon could not do the job for Canada; but I am saying it will be a lot more hazzle and workarounds.
The whole issue with the F/A-18 for Canada is more an issue with the USMC that badly needs a replacement for the early versions of the F/A-18. Not so much because of age; but because anti-ship missiles make the carriers withdraw further from the coast. The early F/A-18 has issues with spare parts and readiness; but that is hardly the main reason.

It's a lovely plane indeed and yes, if you hadn't by now, do try it in DCS, it's one the more user friendly jets that is (relatively) fully modeled there. Now for some minor corrections, i don't think the M2000 can be considered a true air superiority fighter, as it's range and payload is relatively low for that role. It is however a great light weight fighter and point defense interceptor, and i must stress again, truly a beautiful piece of art. Had the French never made the Rafale, this would have been by far my favorite European fighter jet.

Another good video Mats. One thing I noticed is the hard-point configuration on the plane. The four points where the wings meet the fuselage near the leading and trailing edges of the wings must be a natural spot for delta wing aircraft. I recall that even the B-58 Hustler, a plane 20 years older than the Mirage 2000, was retrofitted with hardpoints in those exact spots. The Huslter was a delta wing bomber, and when the USAF started building smaller nuclear bombs like the B61, the Hustler needed this modification in order to drop them. Funny how these features could be carried forward into newer and smaller designs.
