My wife said, "Hey, there's a movie about elephants!" She found out about it on Facebook. If it's on Facebook, it's true. So we went to see Gunda. She kept waiting for the elephants. I figured out early that it was an unusual documentary and just got into it. It didn't have the usual elements of a great movie - car chases and kung fu - but I must say that I enjoyed it very much. I'm glad we went to see it.

This is an interesting aproach. To someone that grew near a farm (my grandmother had one) this kind of image is very familiar. However the new generations obsviously don t have a clear vision about the animals we eat every day. They re only products in a shelf. And they of course are much more than that.

I was thinking same thing, i remember working on a farm and filming "a day in the life of a pig" just for fun and it looks like this movie. I have to watch this film still to see if there is more to it, but part of me thinks people are calling this "mesmerizing" because they are so disconnected from nature. almost as if we fetishize it.

Joaquim Phoenix narrated a 2005 documentary entitled Earthlings, about humanity's misuse of animals as pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research. Also I would call attention to the book by Nathan Lents, entitled Not so Different: Finding Human Nature in Animals, which focuses on both animal intelligence and emotion. Lents is a biologist who teaches at John Jay College (CUNY).

nothing to love! they pretend it's such an amazing and beautiful movie about animals like we've never seen, but it turns out that everybody that made this movie must be a total psychopath. showing the beauty of gunda and her being such a wonderful mum, only then to have the men take all of her babies away, leaving her so distraught, desperately looking for them not understanding what had just happened, while they are filming her grieve!! how mean is that??!? they knew from the beginning that they were going to break this mother's heart and did it anyway. this is a horrible, horrible movie and i have lost all respect for mr phoenix for him to expose gunda in such a sad, sad way.

Whaaat? You know this is a documentary filmed on a farm right? The film maker didnt take the piglets away, he simply documented what goes on in pretty much every farm where animals are being raised for meat and biproducts. I really hope that youre at the very least a vegetarian if youre so bothered by what you saw in this film.

Nope, that ain't it. More like "know the animals You turn into Your food personally and do not buy alienated pork/veal/beef/chicken off a profit-oriented industrial complex".
The problem isn't a moderate use of meat and meat-products for human protein supply.
The problem is how alienated people, estranged from their basic needs and willfully deteriorated down to "consumers", do not know what it means to cherish their farm animals, to slaughter, completely process and likewise cherish the products those animals give them.

    • @karenlm9062
      @karenlm9062 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I understand vegan and all, but honestly, being vegetarian ensures the survival of those farm animals. If no one ate dairy products the general public isn't going to just raise pigs, goats, chickens and cows as pets (beyond sanctuaries). They would have to be fixed too to stop over-population. It's important to see their value, but know these are fully domesticated animals that would not survive on their own. It takes an effort to find a non-slaughtering means for raising, caring, and protecting them.

I was thinking the same thing, whats going to happen to all those little piglets? Maybe JP is hoping that showing the idealistic lives of other animals will change peoples careless food choices, but humans are generally scum for the most part where they'll fawn over feeding a baby lamb with one hand and eat its corpse with the other.

2 months after I left my original comment and Gunda is in the news. Lots of reviews, high praise and buzz about it being an Oscar contender. I've watched the trailer many times. I still haven't seen it though. It's still not available on any of the 3 main streaming services I subscribe to. I did dome searching though and actually found a streaming sight that offered it for free. Nothing to it. I clicked on the button and was taken directly to the site. I watched the first few minutes of the film but then it stopped and I was directed to a paywall page where I had to create an account and pay a small one time subscription fee that would be refunded if I canceled my account within 30 days. I went ahead and did so, then went back to the movie. It wasn't there anymore. I searched their catalog of films, it definitely wasn't there. They'd actually lured me into a scam using Gunda as bait. I looked at the fine print of what I'd signed up for and naturally discovered that if I didn't cancel my subscription, not only would my activation fee not be returned but there would be a substantial recurring monthly fee. I'd used my bank debit card to pay so I was concerned. Aside from being disappointed about not being able to watch the rest of the movie, as might be expected I naturally discovered that it's very difficult to cancel a subscription. I had to jump through a bunch of virtual hoops and go down many blind alleys only to finally discover that I had to call a number and speak to someone in Bulgaria to cancel my account and get the refund. I managed to accomplish this, but I had to jump through more hoops first. The customer service woman I eventually spoke with asked me why I'd decided to cancel my account. I told her why and I think she could hear the irritation in my voice. I made it clear that I thought they were a scam site and I didn't trust them, especially with any of my financial information. She got all stuffy and huffy with me then, proclaiming; "We're an honest business and provide a legitimate service". Yeah...Right ...My point in all this is that I don't understand why Gunda is so inaccessible. Did someone drop the distribution ball on this?

It is from a pig farm in Norway. The mother of Gunda died giving birth and Gunda was the sole surviver. The owner of the farm become the "mother" for piglet.Gunda spent most of her childhood believing she was a dog as her playmates were two sheep dogs.
When she started as teen ager to plow the lawn she was put together with the rest of the pigs on the farm.
It is important for the owner to give the animals as good and "natural" life as possible the relative short time they stay with us.
You can keep the use of antibiotic to a minimum if the animals can move around. Win,Win.
Norway and Island are the countries with the lowest use of antibiotic in farming

The menacing problem throughout is the bloody *_mission_* hardboiled vegans tend to make of their personal leanings when it comes to edibles.
If those vegan people wouldn't try so bloody hard to force anyone and everyone into immediately taking part in their personal, deviant way of classifying food in "halal" and "haram" respectively "kosher" and "tref", veganism could and would go by "just another ideological excentricism".
The dogmatic missionary fervor, though, every other vegan preaches down on normal eaters with, does make vegans and their deviant religion bearable at all only with the help of a good portion of dark, counteroffensive humour on the normal eater's sides.

Lost quite a bit of respect for Joaquin Phoenix when he implied in his oscar speech that producing dairy products is stealing milk from calves.

@@q9c9pilrandagio5 Neither of you knowing that cows have been bred to produce much more milk than their calves would ever consume seems to be the truth. Cattle may be subject to abuse, but calves don't suffer due to a lack of milk.

@@monsterlair You agree diary cows are abused, yet you lost respect for Joaquin for pointing that out? I'm confused. Also, male calves are often killed on the farm or sent to a slaughterhouse for veal. Female calves will suffer the same fate as their mother.
