    it is so normal to need to be by yourself sometimes. I'm guessing you are an introvert - it doesn't mean you don't like people - or that you don't like being around them - it means that you get energy from alone time - and that is so recognizable and normal to those of us who feel the same.

    You’re not doing Mt. Whitney it is what it is! The mountain will always be there and as you mentioned, your journey and goal is to complete the PCT. JMT 2025 is a great idea! Keep crushing your miles and goal and enjoy the moment. 🤙🏽

    Good morning, Julianne. Gosh, what a beautiful trail today. And the views were outstanding, especially at the end. It was great to wake up to that the next morning, I bet. Hope you filmed it in the morning light. I don't think I would try to climb Mt Whitney right now. I'd wait til there's not so much snow up there. Whatever you decide will be the right decision for you and your tramily. You need to be alone to recharge your batteries. Tho being around others is fun and enjoyable, plus you love them, people are draining. You get to the place where you have no more to give, so you withdraw for a period. The length of time you need to recharge varies with each person and the particular situation. Then you can come back refreshed, recharged, and ready to give your all to the group again. Try not to feel guilty, they seem to understand that it is no reflection on them, but rather your need to take care of yourself. Hope that makes sense. Take care. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.

    It was fun watching you hike some of the same places on this day that we hiked when we did Whitney last year. We even camped in the same spot where you had a marmot friend hanging out! We saw somebody airlifted out that evening. Boo!
    If you hike the JMT going south to north, you will do the harder climb up Whitney (~6 miles and 6000’ of climbing.) If you go the other way then you finish at Whitney and climb the easier side. The easier side is what you would do from the PCT, but with all the snow it isn’t so easy. It was tricky enough last year with the record snow!

    No need to apologize for not doing Whitney! It's YOUR HIKE! Hike it how you want to hike it! We're just along for the ride. 🙂 And I need a lot of alone time, too. The extraverts don't get it LOL.

    ... For me hiking (backpacking) solo is all about being one with nature and the environment ... as said ,a good tramily totally understands, whether all want the same alone time ,here and there , or not .... But definitely on the tough parts of any trail ,, there is safety in numbers ....
    .. Do you watch other PCT video's ,, Park Rangers know things about the area and don't talk .... the backpacks and NO hikers ,, Aliens ?? ,, Cartel ?? ,, Sasquatch ?? ..... the smell of BBQ high up on a mountain ,, ???? ,,, Lucy ,What's for dinner ?? ......
    .. Totally agree on choice made to not do Whitney now .... all your points were very valid ...

    So on the PCT you get what, like 4 days when all the snow has melted? Crazy how much snow is still on the ground but then I live on the east coast in the Appalachian foothill so that's my gauge for snow. Beautiful but makes me think about being cold.

    Julianne, you like many would be considered an introvert. You charge your batteries when you are alone. Being with others drains you of energy. Yet, being female, you are more socially natured. Nothing wrong with that at all. It is just who you are. Seek the right balance and you will be content.

    See the positive things. No avalanche so far and although your group was obviously observed by bears, you are still not on the menu at a bear restaurant. No lunatic cows, no fire. With some luck you can even spot a bald eagle in the sierras, who knows. While I was on top of Mt. W it is not that spectacular as there is basically an autobahn going up there. With snow it can be stupid and it can be extremely dangerous in thunderstorms. And as a viewer of this channel I am not interested in you doing foolish things since we all like your videos and if you die in a stupid accident there would be no more. So thank you for keeping your viewers in mind. There are many who keep their friendship for decades after having hiked together for weeks, so no panic, there is quite a bit to hike after the sierras.

    It's your hike. Hike your own hike my friend! Cool you mentioned Jupiter Hikes. I was driving through Julian a few years ago and happened to pick him up and give him a ride to San Diego. He had some great stories. I haven't used waterproof socks, but a friend of mine explained that, when you do a "river crossing" you take off your socks, take the insoles out of your shoes and cross the water with your shoes on. Once on the other side, you dry your feet, put on your waterproof socks, put the insoles back in your shoes and put on your shoes. The theory is that even though your shoes are wet (and drying throughout the day) your feet will stay dry. Thus, eliminating hot spots and blisters from hiking with wet feet. We all need self-time! Enjoy it!! No guilt. They'll understand. I hope you all decided to do Whitney. The highest peak in the lower 48 states! I've done it 4 times from the Whitney Portal. Love that hike and the challenge. ;) If not, I'm sure you'll be back to do it when you do the JMT. IF you do the JMT SOBO, your end point is on Mount Whitney. Then of course you have to hike out 10 miles. ;p Stay safe and happy trails to you all. :)

    With that little snow around 11,000 feet, travel should be pretty quick. Lots of dry ground there. Unusual. Maybe it was a low snow year in the southern Sierras.

  • @Yetithruhikes
    @Yetithruhikes 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

    1. Don't worry yourself about Mt. Whitney and if others climb it or not. Do your own thing.
    2. It's actually below average snow year in California. Both from resources online and from your vids. In an average snow year, at the end of May, the valley that you camped in would be completely covered in snow.
    3. Your range of emotions about hiking makes sense. Don't feel guilty about them. It's your hike and your right to do what you like. You're not doing anything to hurt anyone else.

    • @RC-qf3mp
      @RC-qf3mp 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmm. There’s a difference between snow that falls down in any given year versus snow that has ACCUMULATED from this year and last year, which has not yet melted. There was a giant snow year LAST year, and not all that snow has melted. Which is why there’s so much snow this year, on the ground, which is all anybody hiking really cares about.

    • @Yetithruhikes
      @Yetithruhikes 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RC-qf3mp Of course. But I am looking at ACCUMULATED snow, on trail and close by. Including the vids she is posting and from others. This is a below average TRAIL SNOW year. There isn't a lot of snow this year. It's normal and even a bit lower than average on trail.

    • @RC-qf3mp
      @RC-qf3mp 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Yetithruhikes i just looked up the statistics and terminology. “Snowfall” refers to the precipitation. “Snowpack” refers to the accumulated snow on the ground. So the question is, in any given area, whether snowpack is above or below average, regardless of whether it was an average year for snowfall. By the looks of it, from your observation, there’s less snowpack.

    • @Yetithruhikes
      @Yetithruhikes 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RC-qf3mp Exactly. It's in snowtel, postholer and various vids reporting from trail. Need to also keep in mind that Hikingdancer and her group are hiking in the sierras quite early in the season. The usual (well used to be) Kennedy meadows date is mid June.

Altitude does tricky things and you gotta listen to your body especially when you’re pushing it to the limits everyday. You’re doing great!

    Julianna, there is nothing WRONG with you. The Myers-Briggs concept of introversion (vs. extroversion) involves a tendency to derive energy from time spent alone; time spent around other people may be experienced as emotionally or psychologically draining. These individuals tend to be sensitive to their environments and may even report being easily “over-stimulated” by the amount of sounds, smells, colors, and interactions taking place around them. Yes, there are fewer introverts than extroverts in the USA. That doesn't mean there's something wrong with us. We just need time alone with our thoughts to recharge our batteries.

My first night ever backpacking I was sharing a tent with a friend and she insisted on bringing her toothpaste in (middle school behavior) and a marmot tried to get into our tent in the middle of the night. Roadrunner, don’t feel guilt, part of the journey is found in deep thought and self reflection. If you want to bounce those thoughts off of the rest of the tramily later you can. Or not. You are so fortunate to have found so many genuine people in such a short time reflects the nature of the trail. You can walk by yourself and discover what you are lookin for within you. You regroup in the evening share a meal and companionship. I am sure all in the tramily feel the same way. There are times to be “ selfish “ and think about yourself and discover what lies within. In other words , Don’t Worry About It. Stay safe and hike on.

    Definitely the right decision on Whitney! Most of us who live here in California don't really take our Sierra backpacking adventures until July and August. In low snow years, maybe mid-June. Many of the car camping campgrounds aren't even open yet. Oh, and the critter you saw was a marmot, and they are definitely experts at stealing food from hikers. Watch your packs! You'll find that the bear cans (which I always carry in the Sierra, required or not...fed bear is a dead bear) are going to be much more useful against the rodents getting into your food. Good luck with Forester!

    Don't feel bad about it. It's not worth dieing for likes and clicks.... im glad yourwith great people. Im love seeing everyone from different views on there channels I'm just absolutely blown away how much different the PTC is from the A.T 😮... you have some introvert in you nothing wrong with that. I think everyone gets like that at some point tho. I know I do everyone needs there alone time to think about things

    Smart move, Whitney can be dangerous in a good year. You need to get the meds soon but so far so good on altitude issues, esp at 11320 feet! 630 is a decent start but I recall earlier you did a 430AM start so the snow was still hard. So I assume this isn’t as bad or you feel more comfortable from experience.

    Do not feel guilty! You are a great part of the tramily! This is a physical task, as well as a mental task! Take the time to please your soul! I love your content. KEEP DANCIN'

    Elevation sickness is not too good. It can easily spiral out of control. Dehydration will catch you. Headaches also.
    Be careful. Don't fool around with it.

    Sometimes you need no human stimulation…I live alone in the woods w my dog. I see my son weekly and love being w him too. I love being alone- I need that quiet time too. No apologies.❤️😎⛺️🥾🥾

    Yo do not disappoint! I’m a purist, so if is not on the pct don’t do it! So I would not climb Whitney 💁🏼‍♀️ I support your decision.

    Glad you made the decision to not do Whitney. You will have Forrester and that one is tough. Keep in mind that you will have a much easier time getting a permit for the JMT going from South to North via Cottonwood Pass or Lakes. Cottonwood Lakes is prettier. Going North to South is all about getting permission to leave from Yosemite and that's a tough permit to get. That's why they call it the Golden ticket.

    Good to get in some time by yourself & have such an understanding tramily. Really pretty views today. Whitney can be for another trip & give you something to look forward to. Making good miles! Stay safe. Happy trails! 👣

    Amazing change in snow level, I follow another group about 10 to 15 days ahead of you. A decrease in snow equals higher river levels, be careful! ( I realize by the time you read this you will be through the High Sierras!)

    I’ve watched some Mt Whitney videos. Glad you opted out. Better to attempt when you’re on JMT. Totally understand about wanting/needing time on your own. I think I’m an extroverted introvert, or is it the other way around? 🤪

    Is medication for altitude sickness over the counter or something that can be bought online?
    Maybe Somewhere can share how she gets over any (guilty) feelings when she needs her space.

    We call them trail bandits since below Forester while cleaning up one stole my cup. Let me tell you, they can still run fast with a cup in their mouth. But they are cute.

    No disappointment here. The PCT and you is why I'm here. HYOH. Great Tramily to do this with and I do understand wanting to be alone sometimes. I blamed it on my childhood of being the only kid in the neighboorhood but maybe it's just a personality type.

    Love that you have a tramily that are able to accept your need to hike alone at times without feeling hurt or taking it personally. Introverts like me can understand this need for quiet, alone time to think and recharge. Also love how happy you look when you all get back together. What a great group of people!

    Nothing wrong with wanting to be alone. It is also ok for your tramily current or former not to understand and move on.
