I just got so much nostalgia from seeing those score machines. Those screens are exactly the same as what used to be in the old bowling alley I bowled in league in up until I was 18. Sadly that bowling alley closed like 15 years ago and finally got torn down last year to be replaced with something else. Sometimes I still have dreams about bowling there.

Didn't see my first "plastic" lanes until I got into a travel league in the early 80's....and we had to bowl at Hanscom AFB in Bedford, MA. Now synthetic lanes are everywhere. Except Saco Vally Sports Center in Fryeburg, ME!! Course it's candlepin....but you should go! Fryeburg is fun, Candlepin is fun, even if does possibly mess up your ten pin shot for a few days.

The blandness of the "wood" made it hard for me to target through my ball path. The material felt like bowling on ice, my ball did not hood as much. Now that I'm older, I struggle with lack of ball speed so the synthetics have helped my current game. But I still miss wood lanes. Approaches are a whole nother story, but I miss those too.
I’m the same way. Learned how to bowl on wooden lanes and have always had trouble adjusting. I did kill it though whenever my high school team visited alleys with wooden lanes.

In the same alley some wood lanes are good while others stink. While synthetic lanes are very consistent and smooth. Synthetic lanes revolutionized the game, which combined with powerful balls gave rise to two handers like Mr. Hanrahan.
Almost everywhere is synthetic now. There aren't even many people left with the equipment and nohow to resurface wood lanes so the few old alleys still around with them tend to be beat all to hell and worn out.
Kicking myself for missing Packy on my home lanes! From my understanding, starlite lanes will be switching to synthetic in a month or two. The wood lanes have reached the end of their serviceability here.
I mainly bowl on wood lanes, because the games are cheaper (Semour Johnson AFB) and because it's about 10 minutes away from where I live. I've found that they are either the easiest lanes to bowl on or the hardest lanes to bowl on, and no one lane is the same one day as it was the day before. I know I'm not nearly as good as I could be (I average about 180 there, but on my synthetic lanes in Raliegh I average 195-200), but it feels like I'm bowling on a 46 ft flat pattern because you cannot miss even a half board if you want to strike
I like wood, I averaged better on wood than synthetic. I also don't like most synthetic approaches either to sticky or slippery, I can't use the shoes with interchangeable soles as I shuffle my feet and the rubber on the push off sole catches.
Wood lanes are the best. I miss them.

the small town i live in still has wooden lanes too! As long as they're oiled properly they're not bad at all

I think the combination for wood Lanes is higher RG weak cover to get through the front and strong core.
