I always thought the reason the Wizarding World still uses gold as its primary currency instead of transitioning into fiat money is because gold has special properties that makes it immune to the effects of certain types of magic. Apart from the Philosopher's Stone that can transfigure other objects into gold, you likely cannot use a duplicating spell on a gold ingot or galleon, making the mineral an ideal safeguard against counterfeiting.

One thing that they probably do not know is that they can use magic to grow trees since that's where most paper comes from. Wizards and witches that specialize in Herbology and earth magic can use their magic for tree farming in the muggle world by making paper.

I feel like one method to become rich in the Wizarding World would be to breed Occamys. Their egg shells are made of pure silver. Newt even gave Jacob the egg shells of his Occamy and they were enough for him to startup his bakery store. Just imagine a farm that breeds Occamys for their silver eggs. Such an enterprise could make one very wealthy.

Simple answer; because it would completely collapse the economy.
Besides the great example of post WWI Germany we’re so much money was printed it was devalued to the point of being used as wallpaper.
A similar thing happened in Spain much earlier. After Spain conquered much of Latin America so much gold was shipped back and added into the currency that it tanked the value of gold and almost collapsed the Spanish economy. What makes something hold a value in terms of currency is durability, malleability (ease in which it can be turned into hard currency) and lack of availability.

I'd have to assume the Ministry has some ability to control the money supply and there must be some anti-counterfeit charms and laws pertaining to Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts. We actually know Galleons have serial numbers because the fake Galleons the DA used were enchanted to be able have the date and time of the next meeting in the place of the serial numbers

  • @barbiquearea
    @barbiquearea ปีที่แล้ว +6

I have often wondered how much gold there actually is in a single galleon? They surely cannot be 100% pure gold. The thing is gold is a very soft metal and in the past, especially in Britain during the Victorian era coin clipping was pretty rampant, as people would clip off the edges of their gold sovereigns. This debased the value of the coins but usually people were unsuspecting enough to not notice they were being paid with coins that have their edges removed, and the clippings would get sold off for extra profit. I imagine galleons must have charms placed on them to make them more durable and therefore immune to clipping with added safeguards in place if anyone tries to debase them.

I want to say that he kept the books simply so they where not available to students, I doubt he would expect a student to know of them to even summon them.

There is an Anti-Theft Charm, which is commonly used by wizards and witches who own shops and the charm is placed on everything that is buyable to keep it from being stolen from whomever without paying. So when somebody buys something from wherever, the spell is broken because it was legally bought and paid for, and is now owned by the buyer.

You see what I wonder- Do witches and wizards has an X amount of times/number that they can multiple by. Because if not then the way to be rich is not that complicated. Also another idea- Gamp's law applies to wizarding Britain and Ireland, but it's not a global law and in France for example it could be they don't have such a law. So become a rich witch/wizard in a different country. Then move to the UK if you want with your already existing wealth. That is a breach in the weird laws. And when you talked about transfiguration I thought of stones-loafs of bread (Yes I know the mythological story).

And I definitely agree with your point about the Magical economy and that simply making gold out of thin air or transfiguring it out of something else would completely destroy it. So perhaps it's not that they can't create gold themselves but that It's illegal and they're told that they can it's kind of like how magical it in Britain and Simon Lee all of magical Europe believes that complex magic cannot be done without a wound yet we know that's not true because most of the magical world across the planet in fact does wandless magic. However the ministry of magic constantly reinforces this notion over the centuries most likely that Complex magic cannot be done without a wand. And now it has become a cemented belief and obviously that belief is only reinforced because it makes it easier to control the population and it makes it easier for the magical law enforcement to do their job since it can simply check a one to see the The recent spells that have been used, something that is probably far more difficult to do in the rest of the magical world.

It's hard to justify why this wouldn't work. Magical worlds should have recognizable rules, even if they aren't the rules of our reality. And if it is true that magic can't create gold (except through the philosopher stone maybe), where did the wizard gold come from? From mundane gold mines? Does the wizarding world have that much of a connection to the mundane world? How do they even buy their houses if they are in or adjacent to wizarding areas? None of it makes sense because there is no worldbuilding associated with connections to the mundane world. When bad wizards do things that show up visibly in the mundane world, the mundane world would respond with air to ground hellfire missiles, not cowering in their homes hoping the good wizards win. Yes the wizards are hiding, but they're not hiding ENOUGH. You can do some considerable damage with wands but probably not as much as getting shot with a .50 machine gun or a helicopter gunship. To enjoy this stuff, you kind have to turn your brain off. Otherwise the child endangerment of Hogwarts would just bring you totally out of the fiction.

Creating money given what money actually is, should actually be very easy. Is just one of those case where just because you can does not means you should. Money can be anything that we attach value too and its not limited to gold. So you can not make gold then make something else sell that and you got money. Just make paper money that no one can tell the difference between it and the real deal.
If you can not make food then why not start with the ingredient only instead as that still considered food in it own right.

The wizard economy would be based on Gobline Gold, which, one could easily assume is an alloy not pure gold. And since wizards dont know the secretes of goblin metal working , its logical to assume that at some point in hystory they came to an agreement and Gringotts was built. Otherwise any first year student could hop on a broom, fly near a muggle gold mine and use the summoning Charm Accio and instantly be rich. This is also further supported with gobline philosophy on ownership. All money being used and housed in the banks of Gringotts belongs to the Goblines, they simple let Wizards use it in the buying and selling of goods and services.( But it all eventually comes back to them) ... Which if you think about it .. could indicate a Long drawn out plot by goblins after the great gobline rebelion / war . They have , or will in time essentually have wizard kind enslaved to them through their finacial superiority , the same as we are today to those who control our currency.
Which is I think what JK was implying when she created the goblines money system in her books and how they reflect the stereo type of our jewish bankers.

I'm sure gold xan be made by magic, however like Dumbledore said. All magic leaves traces, and so whether it's conjured gold or tranfigured gold. Magicals would know its been created through magic. And while Transfiguration can be permanent, it can be easily undone through Untranfiguration. This Might be why gold created through the philosopher stone is the only exception because things alter through the philosopher's stone can't be undone with entrance regulation there'd have to be altered all over again by the philosopher stone in order to return to their original form or something else. Or since the philosopher's stone is simply so incredibly rare that there's only one in existence and only one man that knows how to create it they made an exception for gold created using it. So perhaps it's not so much that magic can't create gold but with a didn't money created through magic would not have any value. This is the only thing that I can think of that makes sense to JK Rowland saying magic can't create money because she's pretty much established that the magic in Harry Potter can literally do anything the only limitation is on the wizard or witch or other sentient magical being to figure out how to use matter to do what they want. After all Madrid can give one immortality or allow them to literally alter reality in a variety of ways at the most basic fundamental level I really don't see why critten gold would be difficult. Plus the term of money is so vague because can wizards not create gold would they be unable to create muggle money. It's like the limitation of not being able to create food out of thin air that seems to be the key fact that there wizard and witches may not be able to carry food out of thin air but I'm sure they would be able to create food using existing matter or using the molecules around them to create food.

I believe it would be best to add real money that won't disappear. So you could do a super large amount a few times, especially if you change your appearance.

I haven't read every Pottermore or wizarding world canon. I have only read the books and listen to Harry Potter lore in amazing channels like these and I find very odd that every host of the channels can't really find logic in the fact that wizards can't magically reproduce money or food . To me is makes total sense as it is known that nobody can recreate gold (or any precious metals or stones), the deed is 'humanly impossible'. One would think "but magic then?" And yeah, makes sense magic is more powerful than human inventions, BUT, I'll explain why it all makes sense to me.
First of all, magic is not a 'godlike' power that can recreate things at will; magic is the hability of a 'magic born human' to be able to manipulate some or most laws of physics and chemistry in a way that is advantageous (ex. Transfiguration, summoning objects out of thin air, expand spaces, concield spaces, enter into minds with ones mind ("mind reading"), making things dissapear, duplicate objects, temporarily change the physics of things (petrificus totalus), making things fly... You name it. It is all done in a specific way, if not, the charm or spell won't work in the desire manner. So it not at the will of the wizard, it is at the will of the laws of physics and chemistry, how a wizard is able to manipulate them in the correct way so the magic is able to work properly.
With this been said, and it is why, reproducing food or money is not possible by the Gamp's law. Because the principle is that, food is perishable and the duplication charm just makes a copy but is a superfluous copy, like, let's say, a hologram. And as Dean explained, transfiguration won't work, simply becase food is a good that is meant to provide life and health to the consumer. (Maybe, if you see this through logic, is possible to make a transfiguration or duplicating charm to food, but the results are bad for the person, and the altered food harms the consumer and it's why it has been prohibited by Camp).
And gold. Like Dean also said, wizarding money is like any other currency, that is illegal to reproduce without the permission of the ministry of magic and gringots. So it probably goes through examination, because it's made with goblin's metals and they recognize it right away if the metal is goblin's metal. This is this. But let's also add the fact that recreating gold isn't possible without the philosopher's stone, which was made by Nicolas Flamel.
So, yeah, if a wizard can't make gold with magic and has no philosopher's stone, then is imposible to enrich one self with fake gold becase it will have to go through the gringots' golblins verification and they will know is a fake.
The only way a wizard can be rich is either if they have a lot of gold and they sell it for galleons.
So it makes sense that if a wizard doesn't have a good salary, they can't duplicate money or food, becase magic also has its limits.
Same as magic can't bring people back after they die.

I mean the reason is that JkR didn't think it trough for a children's story.
But maybe the reason is that trying to swindle Gobblins for money is considered moral taboo as something the lowliest of low petty criminals would do. It is unbecoming of a wizard, any wizard, so they just never think about how to get around the law to get more money. Instead, they rely on legitimate ways of earning money.

I always thought that replicating a gold coin 🪙 would cut its value in half, then copying either one would cut that too, while the other is the same. Transfiguration may not conjure things from nothingness, but I even thought of simply “turning” thin air itself into something would work. Magic in HP seems to follow the Law of Conservation of Mass. Nothing vanishes into oblivion, nothing goes to waste, and something can’t come from “nothing”.
