    Hi, could I recommend watching Katrina from lifting pins and needles and Whitney from tomkat stitchery as a resource for techniques, they are a wealth of knowledge which will give you skills to override poor pattern instructions. I've been sewing for 50+ years, sewing becomes instinctive when you understand good technique.I enjoy your videos and love your passion and enthusiasm, keep up your excellent channel. Remember Sizing on patterns is only a cutting line.

    Very informative vid. You are correct on the McCalls pattern that you’ve made a couple of times..the neckline instructions are terrible. I spent too much time trying to figure it out. I finally just winged it. As far as Tillie and the Buttons. You are right on point. I have tried quite a few of her patterns, purchased two of her books, and EVERY single item I’ve tried making has turned into a complete loss. They are just terrible, terrible. I tried adjusting them, redrafting and still no success. I believe my frame is “normal”. I have been so disheartened because I purchased her patterns and books because so many you tubers praised them. I believe you’re about the only one with an honest opinion. As far as the sewing magazines, I have found them to be too loaded of ads, and very little of sewing information, plus quite spendy ..I live in Washington State.

      Thank you for watching and for your comments ! They really are awful instructions so I did the same and just made it up as I went along - so glad its not just me 😂 Its a shame because I know so many people like TATB but they just don't work for a lot of body types and I feel like there is a pressure to like them!

    I made a couple of indigo and the lyra by TATB. Honestly, I'm a 12 on the bust and waist and a 14 on the hips. On both patterns I ended up with issues on the bust (I'm a standard Bcup), shoulders and sleeves. At this stage I realised the prablem is definetly in the pattern drawing and size proportions. I understand though why the young beginner sewing community (I've only been sewing for 1 year now) love these patterns: they are trendy, relatively simple and explanations are very good with plenty of video tutorial....

      Thanks for watching 😊 Agreed, I absolutely understand why they are popular but I just think they aren't the best fit for a lot of bodies which is a shame!

      @@SoWhatIfISew fully agree, I'm experimenting various designers and designs and bit by bit finding out what fit and suits my shape. The problem is that then you tend to always repeat the sane pattern. Thanks God there are so many different fabrics to spend on🤣!

    Re pattern sizing: I compared McCall's M8067 that I got with 'LoveSewing' earlier this year with a 50 year old Simplicity pattern (9143). Bust and hip measurements are identical and McCall's waists are slightly larger. Size 14 is bust 36ins (92cm) and hips 38ins (97cm). A quick check of online size charts shows that these measurements are around size 10 at Zara, between 10 and 12 at New Look, around size 12 at Next and just under size 12 at M&S and H&M. Someone else commented that maybe the pattern companies use American sizing, but these are normally about two sizes small than UK sizing e.g. UK size 12 is US size 8. As somebody else pointed out, clothing manufacturers have adjusted their sizes but the big four pattern manufacturers have been using the same sizes for decades.

      That’s such a good point, high street sizes fluctuate constantly so it’s likely the big four pattern sizing has remained the same for a while. However I would still question how size inclusive it is in the modern day!

    Hay Jess, great video as always :) I get the sewing magazines as well. I have made the B6657 view C & it came out all ok :) I know what you mean about sizing & instructions, sometimes I wonder who does them all originally, as their way of thinking is a little boggling :) Thanku 'sew' much for sharing. xx

    Hi, great video thanks. Big 4 pattern sizes are traditional sizes which date back years and years. The shops changed their sizes at some point which has been nicknamed vanity sizing!! The pattern companies didn’t fall in line with this (as far as I am aware).

    I know exactly what you mean about the sizing. If I buy a garment in the store I buy a size 16 but when I saw one of the big four patterns I usually am a 20 to 22. I tell new sores that if the number bothers you take a black marker and mark out the number that way you don't even have to look at it.

      Absolutely love this, cutting out size labels is the way to go! As long as you are happy in a garment thats what matters

    Would love a comparison of sewing magazines. Tempted by the Butterick B6657 as I hate having to do an FBA on every pattern.

    Hi Jess, I’m new to your channel. Thanks for the vlog. I too get Love sewing magazine - in fact I get Sew and Simply Sewing too!! I like the content in Love Sewing probably the best. I’ll be interested to see what you think of the others. You are much younger then me (I’m 62) so may be that will be a factor. But i too don’t like frumpy stuff and like to think I stay on trend! I love your enthusiasm. A suggestion for producing a video: holding the pattern to the camera was obviously difficult to keep it still and so difficult for us to see it clearly. If you had put the pattern flat on a table with camera down it may have worked better.

    Lovely pattern recommendations; I’ve been subscribed to simply sewing for a while and have been thinking of switching to something else now.
    I heard (don’t know whether this is accurate) that the big four patterns are based around American sizing and not UK sizing which would explain why they seem to come up so small (I’m a uk 12ish and always end up making a 16 in the big four)

    • @SoWhatIfISew
      @SoWhatIfISew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a really good point, I wonder if it is American sizing! Thanks for watching 😊

      So my glasses are from mulberry and i get my lenses thinned twice so that they fit in the frame because my eyesight is appalling!
