I was working on the sports desk of a daily newspaper the night this game was played. We were waiting for the outcome so we could finish the section, watching it on TV from our office. It had to go in because it was college football history if UVA won--FSU's first loss in ACC play. I came up with the headline for the story when we got it over the wire: "Cavs Stop The Chop".
I have to change my comment this game is no longer my greatest memory in Scott Stadium it’s number 2 rushing the field win we beat tech last Friday for first Time in 16 years was the best 3 generations of UVA fans my dad me who have seen tech lose before and my 18 year old brother and 12 year old son who both have not untill Friday it will forever be my favorite game I know they might win bigger and better games but nothing will top the feeling of rushing the field with my whole family
I was there on the hill, 21yrs old, Greatest sports memory in my life! Stormed the field, helped take down the goal post, got hammered drunk and fell off a second story balcony. Good times!
Even though they lost this game it made me a Bobby Bowden fan and ultimately a FSU fan. The last play of the game to have the nuts to do a direct snap 7-8 yards out. Even though they lost I followed Bowden from this point on. Rest easy sir and thanks for the memories.
UVA back on the rise though Mendenhall is changing the face of that program Florida state on the other hand I have zero clue wtf they are doing they were literally winning are in talks of national championships not too long ago they fell quick
I remember watching this on a Thursday night after football practice, I was in 8th grade. I had to beg my Dad to let me stay up and watch the entire game. Was the first time I fell in love with College Football...Been a Hoos fan ever since though its been tough to watch as a UVA fan during the Groh years...But man its crazy how this game takes me back to my youth...time goes by fast....WahooWah
maluman82 Greatest time to be a Hoo fan was the Welsh years. Always lead a talented, competitive team who played hard, disciplined football and were ALWAYS prepared. Great times....hopefully BM can ressurrect that era and push it to even greater heights.
RIP Coach Welsh. This was the greatest sporting experience I've ever had, by far. The stands were electric, and the team was incredible. I remember watching the final play like it was in slow motion.
This is painful to watch. Haven't seen this since the day it happened. Looking at the replays, FSU made a LOT of mistakes that night... totally unfitting for a team that started the season #1. I remember 3:02... 4th and 1 and we call a halfback pass? Also, at 8:38 you can see Kanell had 2 open receivers but wanted to win the game with 2:45 left. I can go on but damn, we made too many mistakes that night. Jeff Bowden sneak into this one?
This Virginia team beat FSU and Georgia in same year those were the days but it’s 1,000 precent George’s fault UVA didn’t get Vick and that caused a lot of rough years for UVA VT recruiting skyrocketed
I remember the finish very well! I was in Air Force in South Korea stationed at Kunsan AB. And it was already Friday morning and I was watching it at work we just happen to not be very busy that day. As I was watching I was waiting for the collapse just like they did against Michigan earlier in the season after being up 21-0. But as the game went along and I saw how well the defense held FSU in check and it got close I started to really pay attention. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
i was at that game and on the field afterward. unfortunately i was too young to really appreciate what was happening, but my mom and dad were going absolutely crazy with joy so i knew it was huge. god i love UVA football.
I can still see myself in the crowd coming on the field - we were the second row behind the bench and got on the field right away. Bumped into Bowden on the way, and then I learned that once you're in a crowd like that you can't get out. I also remember jumping up and getting a bear hug from Doug Karczewski, which was very cool. Eventually got back to Copeley completely exhausted and hoarse - best time I ever had in my life!
Terrell Holland Have to disagree. That 1991 team will always go down as the most talented, most successful UVA team. That's the year I became a die-hard Hoo football fanatic and really got into college football.
Super Min Yes I am! Sure we lost some really good players in Blanding, Kiser, Brown, and Benkert. But I think overall, our talent level is the best it's been in awhile. We finally have a mobile QB that aligns with how Anae wants to play. The O-Line is young but should be improved. I think we have two of the best wideouts in the ACC in OZ and Reed. I'm expecting Jordan Mack to take the next step@ILB and Chris Peace is a All-ACC type of player@OLB. And I think we have one of the most talented, deepest secondaries in the entire country. Only question is D-Line which will be hurting as far as depth but have a pair of guys I'm really high on in Alonso and Hanback. And not to mention, a incoming I think could surprise ppl in Redmond. Of course we have to see how all this plays out over the course of a season but I really think the team and the schedule should line-up well to get us back to bowling this year.
I'm the left DE in the play and I saw the ball come out and hit the ground before crossing the line which is why I pointed it out to the ref. Ball never crossed the plane. The game was 20yrs ago and is history gone by so I'd have no problem admitting if he scored if he had but he didn't.
That was one of the longest four seconds of my life. Having a couple of profs who went to UVA and canceled their classes helped turn it into essentially a four-day weekend at Randolph-Macon, and IIRC a dozen or so of my fellow students decided to make a road trip to Charlottesville that Thursday evening.
@brownhornet22 I realize your comment was three weeks ago, but three weeks later, things are looking pretty good under London. If we have a repeat of this tomorrow, the Hoos will be drastically exceeding all expectations for this year.
I was at the 2017 Rose Bowl with USC beating Penn State 52-49 kicking a field goal to win it with no time left on the clock. I was also at Scott Stadium to see this game. I feel fortunate to have witnessed both games. They were both back-and-forth games. It's a coin toss which was a better game.
No, FSU was #2 coming into that game, we were #24 I think. I too was at that game. Didn't even want to go, thought we had no shot. My roommate dragged me out, and we stood in line for around 2-3 hours so we had great seats right behind the FSU bench. For most of the game we had fun, but didn't get too excited because we knew FSU would take over soon. It wasn't until well into the second half that we started to believe. Tiki and Farrior were monsters in that game.
I just watched the first half of this game on one of the ESPN channels, and had to find out how it ended. This game was lit. Both the Barber bros, Warrick Dunn, James Farrior. And that call at the end is really ballsy. Plus FSU lost. What a game.
I remember watching this as a kid and thinking that last play call was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen, but watching it now, like you said...ballsy, and six inches away from being genius.
Incredible awareness by #37 for UVA. Knocks the ball out before it crosses the plane and then knocks it away a second time as Dunn tries to recover it.
Thank you! Finally someone who can see. I don't know how many times I've heard or read some FSU fanboy say that Dunn scored on that last play. You can clearly see while Dunn's helmet crosses the goal line, the ball never did.
I was just talking to my coworkers about Anthony Pointdexter and how good he was in high school from my area in southern VA. And it was ironic that he made one of the most memorable plays in Cavaliers football history. I was in total shock but very elated and I'll never forget it!
@brownhornet22 Yeah, we def should not have lost to NC State... I was having my doubts at the time, too. We've got two huge tests in front of us, but I think lightening could definitely strike twice with Free Shoes University - go 'Hoos!
This wuz on a Thursday nite around Halloween time. FSU went thru tha ACC for 2 yrs without a conf loss. Virginia gave them that 1st loss. FSU went thru tha conf again without a conf loss & in 97 NC State gave them their 2nd ACC loss
I was there, one of the people who stormed the field at the head of the crowd. I had long blue hair but the video quality is so bad I can't find myself in the video. I had no choice but to run or get trampled by everyone behind me. When I reached the opposite side of the field it turned into a giant mosh pit, so I started climbing the goal post to escape. Someone pulled me down and then everyone started climbing the post. Didn't take long for it to fall down. Walking back to the car I noticed a lot of vandalized vehicles.
This '95 Florida State team was overrated despite all the talent - yes they were preseason #1 and all but they also only played 2 ranked teams the entire season (Virginia and Florida) and lost both games. Then they struggled mightily in the Orange Bowl against a Notre Dame team that was starting a 3rd-string QB, barely pulling out a win as a 14-point favorite. They ran up big scores against a bunch of patsies to make it look like they were better than they really were.
Every defensive player in this game would be ejected in today’s college football for targeting these dudes were knocking shyt loose even the D lineman running plays down from behind
Paul Reid He didn't make the goal line. It was punched out. He recovered the ball with a lot of his body over but he recovered it around his belt area. And it was definitely inside the line. Definitely one of the greatest ACC finishes in history. I have no dog in the hunt, as I'm a UNC fan, with UVA being one of our major rivals. But the call on the field was right. He didn't score.
+Paul Reid Even Warrick Dunn himself didn't dispute the call. The UVA defender knocked the ball out of his hands before he reached the goal line. When he got it back, he was down and the ball wasn't over the line. Virginia deserved the win.

David Berman brought me here. An MVP of the arts
to the max
Hahaha same.
Tiki Barber and Warrick Dunn were so fast...
Even though they lost this game it made me a Bobby Bowden fan and ultimately a FSU fan. The last play of the game to have the nuts to do a direct snap 7-8 yards out. Even though they lost I followed Bowden from this point on. Rest easy sir and thanks for the memories.
Watching this in 2019. Both programs would kill to have players of this caliber again.
MrBopeel no shit
UVA back on the rise though Mendenhall is changing the face of that program Florida state on the other hand I have zero clue wtf they are doing they were literally winning are in talks of national championships not too long ago they fell quick
I come from the future in 2024, both teams suck balls.
Did u see who helped Dunn up at the end? Tiki. Great sportsmanship

Crazy that Nessler and Danielson are still an announcing team after all these years.
Rest in Peace George Welsh. He brought UVa out of the doldrums of college football.
Under Welsh, Virginia beat a bunch of top-10 teams and was usually ranked.
I cant imagine a final play being closer than that
This is painful to watch. Haven't seen this since the day it happened. Looking at the replays, FSU made a LOT of mistakes that night... totally unfitting for a team that started the season #1. Wow! That is one of the most awesome games I have ever seen on youtube! Nice win Cavs
This Virginia team beat FSU and Georgia in same year those were the days but it’s 1,000 precent George’s fault UVA didn’t get Vick and that caused a lot of rough years for UVA VT recruiting skyrocketed
You know why I love watching old football because they didn’t celebrate after every first down or catch or tackle
Being a Giants and Noles fan i can say that i was ecstatic when we drafted him. Tiki is a BEAST!!!
I remember the finish very well! I was in Air Force in South Korea stationed at Kunsan AB. And it was already Friday morning and I was watching it at work we just happen to not be very busy that day. I remember losing a JV game then getting in a fight and kicking my teammates ass in the locker room only to go home and watch this. Great times.
i was at that game and on the field afterward. unfortunately i was too young to really appreciate what was happening, but my mom and dad were going absolutely crazy with joy so i knew it was huge. god i love UVA football.

People forget this was a pretty damn good Virginia team all our loses were by one score or less
That was the most talented team Uva has ever had.
Terrell Holland

I was lying right there on the field and I can promise you he didn't score
i can promise you you're not looking at it objectively. I just watched it he was in
I'm the left DE in the play and I saw the ball come out and hit the ground before crossing the line which is why I pointed it out to the ref. Ball never crossed the plane. The game was 20yrs ago and is history gone by so I'd have no problem admitting if he scored if he had but he didn't.
95wahoo it appears that he did, i suppose we will have to disagree.
utubeisus Dunn actually admitted that he didnt score, and was one the biggest disappointments of his life
renufus11
No. Dunn has said several times that he DID score and got robbed.
Dunn admitted that he didnt get in

I was there and loved every minute of it
Dunn was in on initial push! ACC refs always hated Noles. Fantastic win for Cavs:)
I was just talking to my coworkers about Anthony Pointdexter and how good he was in high school from my area in southern VA. And it was ironic that he made one of the most memorable plays in Cavaliers football history. I was in total shock but very elated and I'll never forget it!

what was FSU ranked at the time.... 3?
I'm a gator fan and that looked damn close to a td lol
Wat about the 1990 squad??? #1 for 3 straight weeks
Warrick was in the endzone! Haha great game Cavs fans,
I read about the final play in Warrick Dunn's "Running for my life" book. That's why I'm here. Lol.

8:59 MOM - STARVING. SEND COOKIES
Damn just to think that one more game would have only "tied" the record for most conference wins...I would have thought they had it by far

Still a touchdown 28 years later. I remember watching this wen i was 11 and crying after the loss
Virginia made a lot of errors and turnovers. Shouldn’t have even been close. I was so glad they won.
Great game!
@brownhornet22 looking better now !
Who's here after we stopped them on another direct snap?
u right we did i didnt think louisville had all those weapons but we gonna see this year go gators
We got robb that night, plus their program needed the help..... now they have something to talk about 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
anyone else think he fumbled and recovered it in the endzone?
Exactly!
that endzone stop at the end was dirty.
8:52 nice shirt 😂
I still hate the direct snap call, maybe from a few yards out, not 6 yards for fuck's sake.
tiki was a monster
that was beautiful
Well...we kinda won the last meeting...at Doak. But nah wish we were too.
Every defensive player in this game would be ejected in today’s college football for targeting these dudes were knocking shyt loose even the D lineman running plays down from behind
did anyone notice the "free drug zone" fan at 8:51? for a second i thought it was a pro-weed shirt
He was in...
btw im a va tech fan but this was and epic game
we gonna see what happens this year
He should be getting picks
Virginia's entire football history
If they would have had instant replay back then it would have been called a fumble recovered by Florida State short of the goal line
upon review DUNN looked like he scored !
Where's ronde
And then again in 2005
Wide left wide left wide left!!!!! Wahoowa!!!!
Virginia playing with the big boys
No. He clearly did not.
Yes #55
Just like i love seeing UF lose lol
tiki barber was the man in college i love seeing fsu lose lol
1:13 dunn made barber take a seat hahahahah
Scott Stadium hasn't seen a crowd of that size in years.
Dustin Trainer the stadium actually got an upgrade, I'd say it's always that size nowadays
When they got killed by USC, it had a bigger crowd
Whether he was in or not that was a strange play call for that situation. Lol.
what happened in 2012 go gators
KNEE MUST HAVE BEEN DOWN BEFORE BALLL HIT THE GOAL LINE.
I still say FSU was robbed in this game. Dunn was clearly in the end zone
Too bad the ball wasn't. 😏
It was raining, UVA still sucks and always will
You're a moron, Paul.
He def scored on that play
LOL no the ball got punched out a foot away from the goal line
And then he recovered it on the goal line.
Paul Reid
He didn't make the goal line. It was punched out. He recovered the ball with a lot of his body over but he recovered it around his belt area. And it was definitely inside the line. @@greqghtw Which still isn't a touchdown.
