Speak of the devil! Absolutely love this game. Border Down is the spiritual sequel to it and is way more of a “memorizer” than this. You can get more out of this game sooner, which might be part of the reason why you enjoyed it more. Some of the reasons you stated are why I also enjoy this more than Border Down. Another great review!

I felt the same way i never thought the graphics were anything special. But i love the style they used it ess diverse a little bit of everything..

A great shmup that I recently got into. I've been going back & forth between Metal Black & Hyper Duel on Saturn. I know it was re-released by city connect on Xbox but I haven't picked it up yet since most city connect ports are plagued with lag. I'd love to see Hyper Duel get a release on current gen consoles. I'd like it even more so if M2 did it instead of city connect. Great video by the way. I really enjoyed it.

Sega Saturn Galaxy Force II was NOT handled by an internal Sega Japanese team nor any other contract Japanese dev team, it was outsourced to a Western game dev because of Sega of America's pressure in the 90s on Sega headquarters Japan to kill off Sega Saturn and make next gen hardware prematurely.
Note that the western game dev was fairly decent if not mediocre in their other Sega Saturn arcade conversions that were 3d graphics.
during 1997 most of Sega Japanese resources were being diverted into the next gen so that was also part of the pressure coming from the 90s Sega of America management lording over the parent branch.
Also note that in terms of hardware the Sega Saturn was more than capable of handling a better than arcade perfect conversion of GFII but it is always up to the contracted dev team. Iirc the arcade hardware ran using dual 68000 CPUs and although this does not tell the full story, a single Super Hitachi 2 or SH2 is more computationally powerful, faster, etc than the dual 68000 and then the Sega Saturn has dual SH2s which again is at the discretion and effort of the dev teams hired because VDP1 and VDP2 just easily handle the arcade graphics under a better dev team
And it does hurt that they messed up the sound... again the original arcade sound was excellent for 80s hardware so the 1994 tech Sega Saturn sound processors should be accurate and clear, instead... you know...
btw not sure but I believe its Appalosa or something who handled Manx TT Superbike and House of the Dead on Sega Saturn and they did a decent Wipeout port on Saturn so in theory they should have been better but those mentioned efforts are mediocre at best on games of much higher quality.
