It's a good track but whoever arranged it doesn't know how to use the SNES sound chip

I guess this version is good in its own right. It sounds pretty good on the b minor (While it's usually on the a minor for most other versions), but the instrumentation is pretty mediocre, especially compared to those other versions (especially the PC-Engine version, which knocks it out of the park).
Still, this was the first version of Valestein's Castle I heard, and while it is far from being my favorite, I have a soft spot for this version.

Having not played a single Ys game as a kid, and coming to these with a fresh ear, I think the hatred on the SNES versions is just that - random Nintendo bashing. Sure, the PC-Engine can spit awesome sounds, and the synth of the Genesis is... iconic, I guess? But for this particular song, I can't see what people find so great about the PC-E version. The drums are loud and obnoxious af, and it completely loses steam as soon as the flute part starts. SNES version any day.

      JESUS this comment section O_O
Anyway, I for one also really like the SNES version of most of the tracks, but it really could've been even better tbh.
Generally speaking, I'd say PCE > Felghana > Sharp X68000 = SNES >>> Mega Drive

This version of the track is accidentally good in its own way. All these awful soundfont choices make the music feels more oppressed rather than being heroic, and there is a tone of being played on medieval/ancient instruments. This is like multiplying a negative number with another negative number.

I've checked out the other versions from other systems and the SNES tracks all sound like they have way more character while the other ones either sound like crappy muffled lofi instruments (PS/CD) or lower bitrate versions of this (NES). Maybe it's just because this is the version I'm most familiar with, idk

Personally I prefer this version over all others. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I don't think so. I feel like a lot of the powerful chords and melodies of SNES song versions become toned down and muted in modernized versions. What gets me about this song is the strong baseline and the very distinctly pronounced melodies that all flow together in a sort of frenzied dance. I just love the sound of many distinct melodies coming together--where you can easily pick out the layers.

@Benjamin Owuye Jagun I actually redid this song on SNES hardware if you're interested. You're right. As immodest as I might sound saying this, the SNES was capable of doing this song far better, and I think my rendition of it is a fair example lol ;) Here's a link, providing the guy whose channel this is doesn't mind me putting it here: th-cam.com/video/aq5Z5Xw-iGM/w-d-xo.html
