I’m enjoying seeing an old slant turn still operating. We had a slant turn 28n atc which was our first mazak. It was very worn out and tools kept getting jammed and we scrapped it. We now have 3 sqt’s of varying size and an old integrex35y. I got a soft spot for the old mazaks.
The tools getting jammed is due to the rubber bushings getting worn out in the tool chain. I replaced the bushings with a short section of metric tubing from McMaster Carr and the tool changer works fine now.
@@mazatroltipsandtricks6816 the tools getting jammed was only one of many issues that poor old girl had. She had been around the block a few times. We stripped it to a bare casting and even with the amount of work that thing had done they ways looked pretty good.

I've noticed on Mazatrol it alarms out on the roughing cycle when trying to turn a taper from small at the front to big at the back using the same tool to rough & finish as you had programmed in your video ,but would do it the other way from big at the front to small at the back . Have you experienced that ?
Sometimes you need to make the taper shorter on Z length and then give it a horizontal line about .050 to .100 long to eliminate the error. This happens more often if you have a radius at the end of the taper.
@@mazatroltipsandtricks6816 i have found if you copy the block of program down ,then only put the taper on the second block only using the finishing tool ,this works as well . So you rough turn it programmed without a taper ,then program the taper & only use the finish tool ,that's the method that served me well over the years .
This solution does not work on our machine .. T32B So disappointed! Some programs work fine (just start from current position) and for others it return to tool change position and then crash into tailstock. Any parameter that can have an effect?
Hi Phil! Love all your videos. Gained lots of knowledge from them. I’m having trouble trying to use the sub spindle on my ‘94 SQT18ms as a tailstock. If I move the B axis off it’s home position I am not able to move the X or Z axis. I get an axis move misoperation alarm. Wondering if you can give any help? Thanks!
We have a sqt10ms, u will not be able to use the sub as a tail stock unless it has a specific option as the servo will overload. However saying that our machine will run the program with sub spindle off home position so that problem may be a parameter.
Go into the TPC screen on that process and select manual for tool approach for roughing and finishing tool and add a relay point so the tool will clear the tailstock. The old T2 and T3 control didn't have TPC Function
Hey guys I'm on a T3 control panel and I am from fanuc machines where I usually have a feed override switch I can turn up and down when running through programs and can turn down rapid speeds, on the mazak I'm on I don't have these I just have feed and spindle up down buttons is there a way to safely run through programs?
@@mazatroltipsandtricks6816 I also have an issue with chuck barriers I watched your video but couldn't find a solution, I set my chuck barrier on the face off my jaws so I can't go into the jaws, but when I try to take machine back go home position it alarms out about 2 inch from face of job saying chuck barrier alarm
Sounds like you need to restart the program from the middle of the program. Look up my video on Demo Part 3. At the end of the video, I show you how to rerun an individual process.
Hello Phil and guys. Thanks for so useful videos. I have a little problem. We have a used Mazak SQT15S Mazatrol T plus. I have the folow task to write makroprogramm in ISO code. For example "N10 G0 X[2+2]" it understund (it goes in X4). But "N10 G0 X[8*sin[30]]" it shows mistake "707 illegale format". The same with "cos", GOTO, WHILE, IF operands. And i can't use variables. For example "#1=5" is the same 707 mistake .May be anybody know how to solve this.
@@mazatroltipsandtricks6816 I "solved" the problem. Left button menu/DIAGNOS/VERSION/OPTION... You'll see a menu with supported functions. My CNC dosen't support macro :(
I think it's safer to manually set approach and escape points using TPC as that's what they are used for. Your way feels more "hacky" than anything. To me at least.
There is no TPC on the T2 or T3 control I am using so I either have to do it this way or adjust the tool change position which is problematic if you have several tools with different Z length geometries. Yeah its hacky but very effective. I never have a problem doing it this way. It just adds a few extra rapid motions to the program.
You forgot to tell the machine that you will use the tailstock. If you don't tell the machine this it will 100% crash. If you tell that you will use it, it will stop in tailstock-barrier (unless you use "barrier cancel") or increase diameter, in heading of program, to bigger then the diameter of tailstock-center. Using a tailstock in automatic is very easy. On this machine you make a manual program that puts the Z-axis at the connection-position of tailstock-body, connects it, moves it forward to the correct position, disconnects it and moves the tailstock-cylinder (with centre) forwards. There will be M-codes for connecting/disconnecting tailstock-body and extend/retract of tailstock-cylinder. Set the sensors at the same position at all times and just let the centre have the same extension all the time makes it easier. On the motordriven tailstocks, make a manual program. Place the Z-axis in a given position, M-code for tailstock movement forward and then tailstock-cylinder movement forward (when tailstock-body is in correct position). When finished machining do the same again. Z-axis into position, M01/M05, measure workpiece if necessary, tailstock-cylinder retract and then tailstock-body retract. Best thing is to move it all the way back to home/rear position. Have you tried to set chuck-barrier Z to a fixed value? Chuck-barrier X is always outer diameter of chuck and Z is always end-face of chuck. Jaw-size are set from end-face of chuck. If you make two programs where program 1 makes all the machining of end-face (end-facing and making a centre-hole) and let the machine know that you don't use the tailstock. On program 2 you let the machine know that you use the tailstock, but leave out the end-face and centre-hole machining. Use the same zero-point on both programs, let the first program change to program 2 and let program 2 start automatic when program 1 is finished. In program 2 you let the program change to 1 when finished, but tell the machine to not start program 1.
Thank you for that write up. Very informative. On the older control, the machine would still try to dive into the tailstock but will stop if it hits the barrier. It still will not run the part though. I may make another tailstock video in the future with going through everything but this was for beginner level.
