I chase at my local grassroots track almost every weekend. Chasing newbie drifters is a lot harder than "pros". But I love getting footage of the newbies because they can learn from the footage. I fly at Apple Valley Speedway in SOCAL.
It’s cool to hear someone else talk about the struggles of chasing drift cars. It’s because of you I didn’t freak out the first time I got caught in a cars wash. You talked about it in a video or podcast or something. Keep these up.
8:7 with GoPro 12 log going forward is a game changer. That's all I run now. I fly at 30 fps at 180 shutter most of the time. 24 just doesn't look the best with chasing the drivers I get to fly behind and the tracks I frequent. I will fly a couple packs in 60 and 120 even just for variety sometimes because I'm capturing a variety of footage for events, not just FPV. I appreciate this breakdown and appreciate the idea for a new video this upcoming drift season.
I agree. But I’ve messed up some footage with log cause I had the settings a little wrong. I still just usually run flat unless someone asks me for log
@@MrSteeleFPV I and I think everyone else here, would love to see a video about your GoPro settings!! Also I wonder what are your thoughts on the new Dji Action 4? I just got it and I think image wise is great. The only downside is that you cant use Reelsteady, but Gyro flow which is a bit more complicated to get into.
Do you think is necessary 180 deg shutter? I feel 10x better video with more shutter, low shutter is cinematic ok but its quite all blurred around and chasing seems not that smooth..
Thanks for the insight to your process! Really liking these new dissection bits you’re making. Super helpful getting your perspective as a top tier professional FPV pilot.
I love your view (share your tips and tricks) the fact is the personality of the pilot shows in the flying we all have something to offer the skills for this are so niche we can only get better
I started FPV 1.5 years ago and you were one of the first pilots i was introduced to online. next weekend i'll be filming my first drift event and couldn't be more excited.
That's a good point about amateur drivers being less consistent than pros. I notice this with mx riders in a very big way. Thanks for the dissections man ,these are sick af
Hey man I appreciate you putting this out and sharing tips. I've been considering getting my 107 so I can do this kind of stuff without breaking any rules lol. Can't wait to see more!
Really sound info man! I agree with everything! especially chasing good drivers, the more you trust them the closer you can get. I’ve had a FPV break..not through choice, I hope to get back to the drifting this year! I need to up my camera tilt..what’s your go to tilt for drifting? No need for sun protection here in 🏴 🤣🤣
@Mr Steele what are your opinions on practicing in Liftoff Slipstream mode? I spend hours a day chasing and I feel like I'm getting the basics and lots of chase time but I'm not sure how it will transfer to reality. This video is perfectly timed for me lol
I haven't filmed a drift yet, but I've filmed rally cars (so fun!), paragliders, dirt bikes, kiteboarders, all types of things. I almost always fly 8x7 so I can post to my YT channel and socials with the same clip. It would be cool if you could film 4k120 in 8x7, but 4k60 is good enough for most occasions.
Big thnx for the inside!! Not done chasing driftcars or something like that. Did a bit chasing bmx/MTB on a pumptrack. Going to do some more of that and try to do MX wen the weather gets better here in 🇳🇱. Think the same apply’s to that as chasing driftcars. Would like to see a video of your cars to. Good to see you back and in this kinda mood. Keep it up!!!
I did everything backwards.. Started Road-racing in the late 90's.. did that for about 8 years(SCCA, NASA, Hyper-Fest, Honda-Challenge Series) and then had a bad accident which took me out of it due to neck injuries. I was also deep into photography at the time, so I came back with my own motorsports photography business, because I needed to be back at the track around the cars and the drivers.. kinda gets in your blood. Plus, there's nothing like the experience from the driver's seat to really give you the eye for where the car is going and how it's going to behave.. makes for some great shots. Had a car flip in the air one time at Summit Point, rolled twice and then came down on it's roof about 30 ft from me. Everybody was like, Dude! Why didn't you run! Just shrugged.. I was getting the shots, and I knew how far it was gonna go, based on the speed and angle it left the track. This was all before drones were a thing(2003ish-2008ish). If I had known I would get into drones I might have kept the business, but I needed to put my engineering degree to use in order to raise a family. So now, full circle, I'm into this ish and thanks for all your tips and breakdowns. Maybe I'll get back out to the track at some point. I've raced at all the east coast tracks so it would be cool to come back and fly some of them. Been following you since 2014.. keep doing what you do! 👍
My GoPro settings I usually lock the ISO to conditions. Then leave shutter in auto to protect against clouds. 4k 60 fps in shoot most. If there’s lots of smoke 30 frames for the motion blur. All depends on how the cars are running.
been practicing backwards shots in assetto and with rc cars and its funny how its way easier from one side than the other lol, almost as with goofy and regular, it happens with so many moves
It's too bad Gridlife didn't come back to CO last year, would've been awesome to meet you. If you ever wanted to come back to CO check out the Slush Motorsports events. We'd love to have you back out!
@@MrSteeleFPV Thanks man! Thankfully it's warming back up today. There was also Ascend last year that took the place of Gridlife. Basically the same thing, just a different name.
Great video man!! Love the talking format, and hearing your take on everything ,super informative! Can't wait to see more like this especially your car collection and Mount Everest.. I usually lock all my settings in where nothing is auto and I have under exposed and overexposed some things lol I might try the auto shutter at the next event If there's clouds in the sky. Keep up the good work man!
2 questions how do you go about getting notified about these drift events and how does it go with being authorised to fly with the cars? Great video too was fun to watch 👍
Rad, thanks. Auto shutter speed will probably mess with the look of the video in terms of motion blur. It may look more cinematic to stick it to the 180 degree shutter angle rule of doubling your shutter speed to whatever frame rate you're shooting at.
Love this style of behind the scenes video. What angle {roughly} is your drone camera? I'm pretty sure you've mentioned it in another video but I was wondering if it's the same when following drift cars.
As a new pilot I'm always looking for ways that professionals capture their footage. I've been curious about the use of head tracking gimbals for following athletes and if you've had any experience filming with them and your thoughts on them. I've really enjoyed seeing the results that GabFPV has gotten with them but am totally unsure if I should attempt to learn how to use them or install one on my drone.
Love these videos! Maybe you can make a video explaining where you're standing for like mid range complicated, flights with lots of objects in between sections? I mean the video where you flew in Turkey where you did that one shot was really interesting seeing where you were standing. I'd love to get a better insight in that. Idk just an idea
Have you flown Everest when you’ve been up there or was it just the thing around the basecamp? Which was dope, don’t get it wrong. I was just waiting for such a thing that days and it never came, just curious. ✌🏻
How many batteries get you through a day of filming in such drift event. Do you constantly charge batteries throughout the day or you always bring enough to last you all day without re-charging them?
Hey Steele, I’ve got a couple questions regarding what drones you choose to fly on the tracks and the regulation around that. Do you only fly at Canadian tracks?
Thanks man do you have any advise for me on flying a go pro 12 chasing oval dirt track cars? I'm in hawaii and usually have a bright sun and fast moving cloud cover to work with. Is there a decent go pro formula that fits those conditions? As far as a certain ND filter? I like the auto features but I can't get consistent film so far. I flew with no go pro for years so I'm a noob 😂 any advice would help. Man dirt sux! As far as follow footage. I'm always tryna dodge mud chunks and dust rooster tails. 😅
Try checking with a local track that has gas’s roots drifting. See if they will let you fly there. I always start with what you can provide rather than what they can provide you. Offer to give the footage to the venue for free and share with drivers etc. always helps you get your foot in the door
@@MrSteeleFPV Ok thank you so much! I was searching an answer for this like for 3 months, but never thought of that. I was thinking that i would probably need to have a license or a contract with a teem. You are a real one, thanks!
