Dyeing Silk With Alcohol Ink

- In this fun TH-cam LIVE, Nancy shows how to use alcohol inks to dye silk. You can create some beautiful patterns. Nancy used Yupo paper to make some designs. She moves next to a silk scarf from Jacquard that already has a rolled finished hem. Fold the scarf several times. Use Ranger alcohol inks or Copic alcohol ink refills plus isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle and a paintbrush. Drip or squirt ink in different patterns on the silk. You can use the different alcohol inks from all the companies that make them to add additional colors. Once you have all the colors you want on the silk, spray with the isopropyl alcohol to blend the colors. Use the paintbrush end to move the ink into areas of the scarf without ink. Add ink as needed and move around with the paintbrush end. Leave on your surface to dry. Heat set with your iron and wash.

I have done alot of silk painting. Silk painting has been around a long time. For many years. I have done men's silk ties and also scarves. I used Jaquard silk paints.

I just by chance found this video. I have a beautiful white 100% silk blouse that has turned slightly yellow, and I just hate to throw it away. So I am going to use my alcohol inks and create a unique blouse! Thank you so much for this video for taking the time to make it and teach us! Cross your fingers my blouse turns out good. Have you washed any of the silk after it has been inked?
I am thinking I will dilute some of the ink colors to create a softer effect!
Hi Terry, yes i did wash the scarves after they were dies with just water, didn't use soap. I would let the blouse dry for at least 48 hours before rinsing it with water then it should be stable. I have never done this with a garment but i could give washing the scarves i did with a mild soap and let you know what happen :)

Hi. Thank you for your clear instructions! I just have a question. Some people soak their scarves in water and vinegar to set the color. I noticed you did not. Is it really necessary? Will the iron heat set it?
Yes you can! I have found that overtime becomes very permanent, but he’s setting is all that I’ve ever done. What soaking it certainly can’t heard it.😀

Not really, the new alcohol would just blead into the marker alcohol - I am planning a video using resist on an scarf with ink soon :)
Can the silk scarf be hand washed without the colors running?
It will run the first time and after just a slight amount.

which silk should be used for inks?
Thanks for watching but honestly I'm not sure, I have only used it 100% silk and cotton. I do think it would work on any natural fiber.
Very nice video, thank you! I tried the same method on 100% pure silk chiffon with Rangers alcohol ink. Same way, how you did it. Let it dry. Washed it with hot soapy water in the sink and guess what happened... all the colors came off of the silk!!! I don't know what did I wrong, but I'm very frustrated right now... :(
I wonder if you heat set and waited the 48 hours to wash it? Very interested in if you did those steps.
Please say how to fix the colours.

Hi Nancy, Yes you can dye cotton with the ink also but because the cotton takes so much more to actually work it makes more since to use other dyes or paints. It works so well on silk because the silk is so fine and that makes the ink flow so beautiful. But I say give it a try, you never know what might happen :)
It’s actually quite affordable to use alcohol inks for this. A few drops goes a LONG way. No need to do a big bottle squeeze. Think drops! 💦
Do you dry this then soak in something to keep the color from running while washing.
They color won’t run. It’s permanent once dry by air 🙂
So so beautiful! Being that Rubbing Alcohol is a bit of a challenge to find now.. do you hv any other alternatives to alcohol to set the ink? Ty and yes your correct I’m binge watching today on this technique. Never heard of it until last week!😁😁😁♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for watching! Sorry, but I only know that the alcohol work, drinking alcohol isn't nearly as strong so i don't think it would work, at least not like the 91% kind.
Some people use Everclear. It has a high alcohol content. Find it at a liquor store. It does behave a little differently than isopropyl alcohol. I’d test it on a scrap first.

I don't know, sorry - I have never tried it - personally I will try anything at least once just to find out :)
You can if you don’t intend to use the scarf layer. I have wrapped tumblers in silk. You need to be sure to seal it very well with mod podge or you get what’s called “oil slicks.” But the epoxy will stiffen your fabric. So it be aimed an art piece.
So it does work on cotton too right?
It will dye cotton but it takes “tons” to color cotton because of the fiber
Hi Nancy! I love your videos and watch them all. I am interested in using this technique to make variegated ribbons to use on my projects. Any suggestions? I saw a Pfaff video showing ribbon stitches on a creative icon and I am hooked but want variegated ribbons and can’t find them! Any help would be much appreciated! I found a work around buying that expensive machine and am now more determined to add these ribbons to my supplies….
Great idea! You absolutely can use the inks to color silk ribbons. Another option would be Jacquards Dye-Na-Flow paint - it is fabulous and is just another option to get what you are looking for. Can't wait to see what you make!

Hi Nancy 😀. Let it set for 24-48 hours. Heat set it on silk setting then rinse out with cold water. Some ink will come out but not much. Have a Merry Christmas😀

Any thing is possible. I am not sure how the ink will spread on a georgette but I'm sure it will look cool :)

Excellent video but the volume is a bit too low.
instead of Spraying alcohol... you could also use the Squirt bottle of Blending Solution... less goes into the air to breathe.
I looked up material costs on making a scarf. I calculated $46 is that correct?
You can get silk scarves for anywhere from $5-$10 depending on the size you are looking for so no, I think the $46 is a bit hi :) - Nancy
Isn't alcohol damaging to silk?
No it's not. The alcohol evaporates quickly so it doesn't do any damage.

You don't have to heat set alcohol ink. You just let it dry and then rinse it in cold water.

Hi Carolyn, that's just me - this is how my studio is and it is in a basement :) - it's funny though, when I was watching the video even I though "boy that's a mess" and I am considering straightening it up - but I can't hold my breath on that, i have too much to do :)
