Thank you so much for this. I had a report on SHH protein and I have been looking for the best explanation in Google and TH-cam but yours was the only one that specifically discussed the Sonic type and you explained it so well!! I'm very grateful to you good sir!

Had Moh's surgery today for a basal cell carcinoma (BCC), a superficially tiny lesion that had extended its tentacles much further than I'd imagined. A tiny bump required five samplings before we got negative margins. It left a 3" incision on my face.
My surgeon alluded to the Hedgehog pathway in BCC pathogenesis. It's one of many signaling pathways that gets perverted through mutation, a fact of life and possibly of lifestyle. Dysregulation of my own Hedgehog pathway allowed cells in the basal layer of my skin to become malignant. Signaling gates, normally closed, were opened by the mutation that allowed cancer cells to proliferate.
Even if we patients can grasp the why or how of our cancer, it is stunning to contemplate the complexity of it and the possibilities for cure and prevention that such complexity offers. It may not happen soon enough to benefit us when we are still alive, but will help our progeny.
Of more concern to me is the willful blindness and hosility of the deniers, those who see science as the enemy. The anti-vaxxers and those who would politicize human biology and its meaning for our lives and very survival.

    This was sooooo helpful!
I'm doing a review of some papers on stem cells differentiation for uni, and the papers didn't explain the mechanisms very well at all. This is really great! Thanks so much!!!

Isn't it weird that Hedgehog inhibits patched, when hedgehogs are patched rather than smooth?

The color for pre-HH, HH1, and HH2 suck. Please consider using a readable combination next time.
