Johnny Marr was right when he said that Morrissey is the most hilarious man in the world. He has such a unique, intelligent, sarcastic sense of humour that he doesn't show quite often, which is certainly a shame. I actually laughed more with his interview that with any comedy movie, and i don't think his opaque, funny character is really appreciated
I loved The Smiths, I bought all the records and saw them at Derby Assembly Rooms, when Whistle Test filmed it. They were magnificent. Since he went solo, he's crawled so far up his own ring piece that he's become unbearable. He sits in LA, in his ivory tower, pontificating his bile to his sycophantic followers and they lap it up like ambrosia. I can't listen to The Smiths these days. Thankfully, the real genius behind the band, Johnny Marr, has a decent "ex Smiths" body of work for me to still appreciate the thing that attracted me to the band in the first place. The music.
I was just watching a documentary about Lemmy from Motorhead before I watched this.. and I can't exactly put my finger on it, but Lemmy and Morrissey are exact opposites, yet they made THEMSELVES into Icons in the music industry by being honest, loyal to the fans of their music and never once selling out. They are both honest (was in Lemmys case RIP) .. Not many Stars of today do things their way.. but these two did.
It really is his best solo record - I loved the Smiths, never could get through an entire Moz solo record until this one which I wore out at the time. And he was so thin and fit looking still.
Personally. I thought this whole show was brilliant. J ROSS has a real knack with people. So funny. We are the quarry, has been up there in my top 10 albums since its release . Fantastic album.
Ross was hilarious and brought our a funny side of Morrissey you rarely see. Pre interview, the line about importing drizzle from Machester to California made me spit out my tea! 😂😂😂
Only came to really appreciate The Smiths a few years ago. Now I really appreciate Morrissey for his love of animals and lack of BS about humans (I hate most of us too). Most of all I love his lyrics, they are so descriptive and remind me of Alan Bennett.
Morrissey is such an interesting man. Such compassion and dislike of people at the same time. I really wish him inner peace and happiness in this world that he finds much not to like.
For me as a German that is _the_i ncarnation of _Englishness_ or shall I say _Britishness:_ The extraordinaire humour, the style, the taste, the music, the politeness in conversation. But nowadays I understand that is not regular or common in British TV anymore...?
Remember this when first broadcast 2004, joking that he must've had a bacon sandwich before he went on. Rare inteview even then, before his sublime someback. Thanks for staying true, Morrissey
JR handles this very well. I think he knew it was going to be very dry unless he quickfire questions. Mozza is not much of a talker and and a very awkward interviewee.
and he sings like him... just a little bit 😊 hey wait a minute... the first time I became aware of Mozz was that video where he went to INDIANA - home of James Dean & Jim Nabors 😮 😂 🎉
This is from 2004 and Dale died in 2018 and Morrissey is absolutely knackered these days. We are all getting old people like it or not 😢 Especially vegetarians 😂
Never saw Ross before. This certainly was a peculiar line of questioning. Putting myself in his place, there are a thousand questions I would have wanted to ask Morrissey instead of this foolishness.
This big Morrissey fan is confused. He said "I miss British people" and later "I don't like people, to be honest." When the great Morrissey said he doesn’t want to be called Steven, it was the perfect time for the host to ask him why then it was OK for the great Sandie Shaw to release her song “Steven (You Don’t Eat Meat.)” Why wasn’t the host educated enough to do so? Twice I bought “You are the Quarry” and twice It wouldn’t play on any of my CD players. Perhaps that British pressing the host held was different, but I haven’t found one here in California.
Simple! He doesn't like people (neither do I). But, if he has to be around them conversing, then he'd prefer they be British like himself (rather than American, where he lives most of the time). Since at least then, they would have more in common culturally. As to why he then chooses to live in a place like America, it likely gives him more excuses not to go out and socialise with others. Whereas, if he lived in Britain, where he knows a lot more people/family, etc. He'd face more pressure to meet up or attend family functions, etc. It's basically, how unsociable introverted personalities are.
@@Music-tg5is Thanks, your explanations make sense. I was puzzled because I tend to be a very literal thinker so I didn't know why he didn't add "except for British" near the end. Although now thinking about it, I suppose doing so would have led some to accuse him of being racist, and he doesn't need any more of that. But I don't think preferring to be around a certain type of people makes someone racist against the others, not intentionally anyway. I'm still wondering about the Sandie song and defective CDs issue, though. Have a nice day.
One gets the impression that Morrisseys aura made Johnny Marr into a great guitarist. For a non musician he certainly understands guitar sounds and textures.
Every week, mercy would get drizzle from Manchester & straight Rhein poured down on Him down from the Oregon skies. Thank Yah, Thank Yah, Thank Yah ABSOLUTELY FABULOUSLY Je, for brightening My Rhein because I AM old(er, & I AM not yet a was...)!!!
The second Morrissey opens his mouth, the world is in the presence of a human on another level. The lens through which Morrissey is able to read (in milliseconds) the hypocrisy of the poor humour offered up by Jonathan Ross, is evident. The incongruence on Morrisey's face, at every bad taste joke (i.e. the incessant jokes Ross makes about vegetarianism and his truly cringeworthy version of 'pop' interviewing that we had to endure during this 90's) is handled with aplomb. Above all, it is his humility (I.e. his embarrassment that he must 'pity' Ross so many times in a row during his pitiful questions) that makes Morrissey so obviously above Jonathan Ross in this interview.
Ross is just awful, isn’t he ? Ladies and gentlemen……Mawsey. I genuinely expected Morrissey to leave half way through, Bee Gees style ! A great rendition of Every Day is Like Sunday, I bet Morrissey couldn’t wait to get off that sofa and back to the band. A great man indeed.

True, the combination with Jonathan Ross is a gift though.
Not agreeing with Morrissey on his animal views he can move on.

He’s an eccentric ol’ character for sure .. but presents as seriously uncomfortable being interviewed.
He's weird AF
14 May 2004. Fuck me, this is nearly 20 years old!
Commenting so you come back it’s been 20 year!
I know..
"He has drizzel flown over from Manchester" and "cheer himself down" are genuine morrissey-sounding jokes
Cheer himself down was extremely clever
The funniest line. Even Morrissey couldn't hold back the laughter, though you can see he tries to hold back.
Morrissey keeps it real.. Period.
Really pretentious.
Haha.. true but their music was deserving of merit… for the time he was a unique character.
him saying "there is no Mozza charm" is charming !
Outstanding
⭐️✨️✨️ Morrissey is so real ✨️✨️⭐️
Do you miss England when you're not here? Yes, and even when I am here...
He's spot on with that!
So happy I came across this, I remember watching it when it first aired and I enjoyed Morrissey's interview just as much now as then, thanks ❤
Ross & Morrissey at their best . This is what a chat show should be
Oh my goodness "DENO" Morrissey Drummer at the time got a wonderful a reaction. Love it. After all those years. Love ~it. DENO. We love you

Very natural and honest lyricist without American cliches.

Get rid of Labour & Tories is probably one of the best lines I've heard in lyrics, liked that (:
He got out of Morrissy more than anyone! Good!
I kinda relate to him, I hate people and I really only have 3 friends.
38:18 The interview starts. Host sounds like a needy guy trying to be friends with Mors. I like Mors's honesty for the instant answer.
It’s called irony
