Morrissey - The Solo Years - {Complete Film}

  • {Complete Film}. The solo career of Stephen Patrick Morrissey has, to date, lasted five times as long as that of his former band The Smiths. So while, as with the majority of artists, his most memorable and significant work was created during his first few years in the business, his numerous solo records, issued across three decades, prove that Morrissey was the main creative force in The Smiths, Johnny Marr not having released anything memorable since the split, and the other two not having released anything at all except as session musicians. This film documents Morrissey s solo years and tells the story of this period of his life in vivid detail. Featuring rare footage of Mozzer in performance and in interview, contributions from those who have known him best (including Tom Wilson, Stuart Maconie and numerous others), seldom seen photos, location shoots, news clips and a host of other features. Extras include digital Morrissey discography and Morrissey online quiz.

Our village country pub used to have a jukebox. It was filled with old tunes from the 50s and 60s like “ The Crystal Chandeliers “ and the most modern music was Status Quo or Mungo Jerry but somehow “ Girlfriend in a Coma “ was added to the machine One night I walked into The Three Bells - full of crusty old retired Farmers with their Jack Russells & Collies - to suddenly hear the sound of Morrissey crooning loudly above them all ! Viva Hate and Bona Drag* are both masterpieces. Fantastic pop albums with some of the best lyrics Moz has ever written and some of the most risky and adventurous music...
But songs like Sing your Life, Throwing my arms around Paris, You have killed me, Kiss me a lot, The more you ignore me... are enough to build ANY artist's career... Moz' solo career is epic and legendary.

Johnny Marr is undoubtedly a great guitar player, but as a personal opinion, in music it's the lyrics that runs, and upon that point of view, Morrissey is a gifted. He is really someone out of the ordinary. He's a tremendous song writer. God bless him for what he's already gave us.
As I see it, in music it's all about lyrics. You pass a message whether a personal experience, a caleidoscope view of the (your) world, anyway a message that glues, an 3/4 of the success is there. After that it's just a question of a great music writer.

Don't at all understand Vin's comment near the end when he says Morrissey sounds bored. If I put on a Smith's song say Cemetery Gates, then an early solo like Suedehead, then one of the new songs like Irish Blood English Heart, I don't hear any less commitment or interest in his voice. What is he going on about? Actually, Morrissey seems to have somehow been able to retain an element of genuineness and honesty that makes him as listenable to now as in 1984.

Street is clearly the honest one here. Vini just basically states that he wrote the music and didn't take credit for it (oh, okay), while Street actually gives some specifics, like citing Kate Bush as the influence for the strings in "Angel, Down We Go Together". I've always thought Morrissey should've stuck with him, and that we missed out on some great music. Those singles after The Smiths - "Interesting Drug", LOTFIP, "Suedehead", etc...- classics.

Not sure I agree; what else has Stephen Street written? And I can't see where the motivation would be for VIni to lie. I always wonder about those who seem most vehement.
It's likely that they both had input, and were not able to sort out recognition.
There's such a lack of recognition of Vini Reilly on that album's packaging that I was suspicious at the time of it's release. I worked with record labels not long after that time, and can tell you that people were quite dubious about credits, and much of it was over money. Oh, the days of sales of physical product generating real money ...

Maybe Morrisey did take the piss, and I've heard enough to agree that Reilly is an extremely talent musician in his own right; he's made some fantastic records, and his guitar playing on Viva Hate is great. You are talking specifically about that NME guy's comment, right? People love Morrissey's solo stuff. There's at least four solo albums that I'd rate as good as The Smiths. He's has had a long career, complete with rabid fans. Just 'cause you're not that into it, that doesn't invalidate the guy's point. The Smiths were, what, 83 to 87? There were some low periods over the years, but he's still mostly been huge. What are you disagreeing with?
(And incidentally, both Paul and John made some great solo stuff, stuff people care about quite a bit.)
You are arguing a point the guy didn't even make. He's just saying the Smiths were a short-lived band, compared to Morrissey's long career. That's an empirical fact. He didn't compare the music. But again, Viva Hate, Your Arsenal, Vauxhal, and Quarry are as good as any Smiths record, imo. But that isn't the point.

It wasn't THAT hard to get stuff back then, haha. I was watching it all unfold on MTV's 120 Minutes as it went along. Hell, I wasn't even IN Springfield, I lived in Enon, a village of like 3,000 people between Springfield and Dayton. I had The Stone Roses first album, The Cure discography, the Sundays first album, New Order/Joy Division stuff, Siouxsie, etc. Even Cocteau Twins stuff, Lush, etc. It was all around if you looked.

I believe Stephen Street when he says he wrote the music for the Viva Hate album. I've seen him play guitar onstage for Peter Doherty's solo gig at Camden Roundhouse in 2009, he was good. Graham Coxon played guitar on Pete's solo album but when he couldn't make it to a live show Stephen would fill in for him and he is a good guitarist and it wasn't just songs from Pete's solo album that Stephen played but he played some Babyshambles songs at that gig too.

Crass, not particularly classy...but untrue? How so? Morrissey kept going, making great music. Johnny was a great guitarist and the first in a long line of successful collaborations Morrissey has had. But what has Marr done since? I know he played with Modest Mouse, not on their most successful album, but after. And he did something with The The. But I couldn't name one post-Smiths track of Marr's. Rourke was a great bass player, but come on, that's what he was, a great bass player, adding his contribution to songs written by other people. And ol' Mike can go shit in his hat. He wasn't even a particularly great drummer. I agree the description didn't need to be said, but it's certainly not lies.

Interestingly placed on the timeline, I do think this film is an expansive examination of the impressions of those who had worked with him. But I do think the most illuminating observations come from Tony Wilson. The Smiths songwriting owes it's uniqueness to the LACK of conventional pop songwriting inherent. They simply had not mastered conventional songwriting, except perhaps on a song like "Light". JM and M both like to think they have advanced as songwriters but ofcourse the evidence is refuted by their earlier work. They had a unique writing style. It ensured the records would mostly not become pop classics, like say a Neil Diamond song or whatever. But their style was part of the esoteric, enclosed world which retains an appeal for so many of us. I comb his solo back catalogue with real interest, however. Wrap Your Arms Around Me verbalises emotional pain uniquely. It has indeed proven difficult to find a consistant anchor, judging by the erratic results, and I wonder if he has really blown in it Britain now (2018). He is a complex man isn't he. I wish I could identify myself actually because one of The Smiths is a big fan of my work, and given a chance I know I could make a good record with M.

Brian Eno described his album LC as his favourite piece of music and John Frusciante described him as the greatest guitarist in the world. In 2010 he had a stroke affecting his musical ability. He has worked with dozens of artists and is reverred by many artists. It's easy to mock when you're a talentless, ignorant twat.

@@AnthonyMonaghan well, to be fair, the negativity, I'm fairly certain, was born of his ridiculous claims. He wrote all the songs but didn't want credit? Please. Street, whatever you think of him, can offer specific commentary on what inspired him, what he was aiming for with a particular musical idea. Reilly sat quietly for two decades and then turned 'round and went, "Viva Hate? Oh, I wrote that." It's clearly bullshit.
Edit: or maybe he's telling the truth. Street, in my opinion, seems far more believable. Any audio-geeks out there? Street claims the strings on "Angel, Angel" are an actual string section; Reilly that he played them on a synth. Not that that would automatically prove his other claims, but it would do a bit. Anyone know how it could be determined for sure? They sound like strings to me, I have to say. My opinion is Vin Reilly is a crazy person. But what do I know?

I don't know the answer. My gut says that if the music was great, then a great musician wrote/played the music. I.e. Vini is great and imaginative. Street is workmanly. I'm going with Vini.
2ndly: Who is it that had reason to play-down Vini's role? Morrissey did. If he let Vini's name be all over the album credits, people would know it was a Vini album with Morissey just singing over it.
On Street's behalf, Vini does seem a bit odd. So I don't know what kind of memory / ego problems he may have. People in comments saying that Street is suspiciously defensive. Well, if someone makes claims to work that you yourself have done, you'd be pissed off too.
Also, pro-Street: Vini says he told Street in the studio that he doesn't want credit on the album? Pretty much NO ONE ever says that. I don't quite believe it. Unless Vini got a big fee just to be there.
What a weird thing. Morrissey is to blame.
