Kiwi is entrusted by a lot of British military personal. I use their parade gloss and standard black polish on my parade shoes and I can safely report it works to a better degree than any other polish I've used

I personally prefer Lincoln wax. 18 year military member. Chelsea leatherfood for when you strip the polish off the boot and want to condition. Allow to dry and then repolish. I’ve got combat boots that we re soled several times and the leather is still great 10+ years on. So, while I do use kiwi just as a top coat for formative layers most soldiers I know that got really into the boots/shoes/Polishing to perfection liked the Lincoln wax over kiwi. Not saying kiwi is bad. Try some Lincoln wax and see what you think! 4-5 USD a can.

simpilot757, you could also use a mink oil to condition after you strip polish as well. I just found i like the chealsea leatherfood.

I totally agree and especially the newer high end version with carnauba wax called "Parade gloss prestige". And I used it on everything from Dr. Martens and combat boots to fashion leather shoes. Not saying spending 10 times more on a can of shoe polish can't give you a great product that might be a little better, but still kiwi is overall the best quality for the money. And seriously, having to comment that it "smells the most toxic" made me laugh... He's so irritated that he might get into legal trouble simply callin it toxic without any proof at all. And since when did paper act like leather? And why comparing to the regular kiwi and not one of their high end products?

I had never used Saphir before today. I saw it featured in your videos and on your web site so I bought some to check it out. Man!!! What a world of difference. I just bought a pair of Church's Custom Grade Derby style shoes. They really soaked up the nutrients and softened and became more supple immediately. The shine is fantastic. I've never been able to achieve anything close to the with Lincoln or any other polish. Thanks so much for the introduction to Saphir and education about shoe care.

@@MoccaLG And perhaps because we simply have to take he's word that the others are crappy and even dangerous. Testing with a piece of paper... Seriously, since when did papir act like leather 😂 Also he stayed the wax and oils is ruining the leather but has no sources at all, we just have to take he's word for it. Kiwi is used by professionals and in many countries by the army. If it ruidined the boots it probably woildt be choice number one by so many. Not saying that that means it's best and others can't be better, but by all definitions a brand like kiwi is trusted by so many. I have had so many boots and shoes in my life where the leather still looked pretty new when the sole was worn out, and I used stuff like kiwi and Lincoln. I also wonder why he didn't took the high end kiwi range and tested, the one that has carnauba wax such as Kiwi parade gloss prestige. It's a bit of an unfair test with the cheapest in that product line from kiwi and then a high end shoe polish.

Used kiwi for my captoe derby since 2006. All i got is crease and no crack so far. Doesn’t matter what product you use if you don’t know how to polish properly, you’ll still gonna ruin your shoe.
Always use shoe tree for your dress shoes. If you don’t have one, just use stuffed plastic for temporary use. In the meantime, find that shoe tree then immediately replace that plastic stuffing. This helps your shoe from bending too much and also helps your upper.
If you have the money and the access to a better product, then please buy one. If you don’t (in some 3rd world country, it’s hard to find quality shoe polish and when you find one, it’s way to overpriced. Like for example here in indonesia) then stick to what you got and learn the proper way.
A little bit tip from me. If you have only access to a cheap product, try find a local shoe polish vendors that used the same product as you got and get your shoe polished. While your shoe got polished, watch and learn, also ask the clerk about some tips. Because they know ins and outs also they know how to work around cheap products.
    (Sorry for my bad english)

I knew using polish alone wouldnt help this old soviet pair of boots but they're the most comfortable boots I own now thanks to those things. Seems like Saphir is all those in one which would save me some work.

@@TeensierPython Did you try the newer version of parade gloss, the one called parade prestige with carnauba wax? Well, I think the pint here is this has the typical ref flags from a biased advert. Even if he's right about saphire being a bit better (at that price range, that's also what most would expect) he'd kind of warning against the others. And kiwi is a good quality product.. He also mentions that it smells "most toxic" as far as he legally can go since he can't make claims it is toxic without any sources or proof. I'm pretty sure no shoe legal polish is toxic if its used as indented. It's also pretty disappointing that he's comparing it to the low end line from kiwi. As I me mentioned before there is a high end range with other waxes, why is he using the cheapest one from kiwi?

I’m an old U.S. Army officer (back in the black leather boot days) and had been pretty dedicated to Lincoln and Kiwi. I have owned a -lot- of quality black leather footwear. I have been watching Kirby’s videos, and decided to try Saphir out on my favorite pair of black AE monk straps. I am duly impressed. With kiwi, it never seemed to harden up entirely and the shine is easy to smudge. My black shoes have gone for 5 total days of wear, and look really good still. I can comfortably state that my Lincoln or kiwi polished ones would never have made it without me having to re-polish them at least once in that same time.
Kirby, it might be fun to try a restore on a $50 eBay find, using saphir on one, and kiwi or Lincoln on the other shoe.
I’m not entirely sure why Saphir works better, but in the end I just want my shoes to look good and last. My next order is on its way Kirby. Walnut this time! Also, Like the earlier comment, I would love to know what colors to use on 1776s from AE. I’ll be breaking them out for Veterans Day!

Mr. Gorman - first off, thank you for your service! Few people can shine shoes better than a serviceman!
Thank you for sharing. Yes, you hit on a really nice point: the shine with the Saphir shoe polish persists longer. I think it is because Saphir uses much higher-quality waxes. In addition to lasting longer, they can also be easily rebuffed with a horsehair brush for a quick re-shine.

I would have really loved to see how to distinguish good polish from others. Unfortunately this test doesn't prove anything. Only that paper becomes more translucent with oil than water. Note: I'm not denying the conclusion that Saphir is better. It may very well be. Just that this test is simply not useful in measuring quality.
The reason paper gets more translucent is because of the presence of oil products in Saphir cream polish. Oil has a refractive index similar to that of the fiber in paper which makes it translucent. Paper has a different index which while makes it less translucent, ends up soggy due to absorption. You can easily reproduce this test at home with any type of oil and water on paper.
This test doesn't carry over to leather and doesn't actually show how oil based product (natural or otherwise) is better than water based product.
(See here if you're actually interested in the physics behind it. physics.stackexchange.com/questions/30365/why-does-paper-become-translucent-when-smeared-with-oil-but-not-so-much-with-w)

I’ve used kiwi parade gloss on my $424 pair of old beat up Danner Fort Lewis police boots and it’s been ok. It takes about 6 million layers to achieve a good but not great shine. I switched to linkon and am testing that product out now. I used a heat gun to strip them down to dry Leather. Brushed on 7 layers over the entire boot then melted it in. I’m trying to learn how to high mirror shine the toe caps and struggling a bit because the technique is a bit different than kiwi parade gloss. I also switched because my boots are in a cold climate and then spend the night on a boot drier and I will literally spend 2 full 8 hour days polishing them to my satisfaction using kiwi, only to see they are cracking like crazy on the toe caps even when using a brand new tin of it. Looking forward to someday being able to afford to give saphire a try.

I need your help in a major way. I purchased a pair of Grant Stone diesel Crimson boots. When I receive them they had some kind of red and his self on the back left part of the boot. I took an alcohol pad as I’ve done with leather boots before and tried to wipe the adhesive off. Instantly gave me a doll scratchy looking spot about the size of my thumb. I have tried everything to get it to look like the rest of the color leather and to get some kind of sheen on it with no luck. Is there anything I can do or am I screwed? It’s cxl leather.

Kiwi or Lincoln, I feel, is great for applying a base and really covering the pores of the shoe to create a smooth shine, while Saphir is great to be used after the base coat process in order to achieve a high shine.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I would, in all cases, stay away from Kiwi. I could see an argument for Lincoln when used in a manner similar to the Saphir Mirror Shine. Lincoln contains a high concentration of beeswax, which produces a nice hard wax base, but does not contain the level of solvents or other ingredients essential for the long-term, proper conditioning and maintenance of a fine pair fo shoes.

    • @Cj-nj6cv

what is the difference between the Medaille D'or wax/pommadier and the "basic" version (less expensive) from Saphir?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Check and raise. ;) The Saphir Beauty Cuir (SBC, as I call it, or their standard blue label), is a good polish. It is definitely better than all of other polishes we used in this video. It contains high-quality waxes and uses natural solvents. However, the difference between the SBC and the MDO is in quality, concentration, and variety of waxes, ingredients.
Saphir Medaille d'Or contains a different and higher concentration of hard and soft waxes, which is why you get an easier, higher shine than in the Beauty Cuir. It also contains a higher concentration and quality of pigments, which produces better recoloring and restoration of the finish.
And there is a "huge difference" in the waxes you are using in the Saphir Pommadier MDO vs. SBC. The Saphir SBC uses almond oil vs the shea butter in the Medaille d’Or. Combined with the unique combination of the other waxes, the Saphir Medaille d'Or is a much better nourishing polish and produces a higher-quality, longer-lasting shine.
Lower quantity of beeswax in the Medaille d’Or vs. vegetable saxes, which produce better nourishing. MDO contains carnuba wax (I'm spelling this incorrectly), which is a harder wax that produces a higher shine.
Tons of differences... is the Saphir Beauty Cuir good? Yes. Is it better than the Saphir Medaille d'Or? No.

I've got some of the beaut de cuir blue label creams and to be honest they are excellent. That said, MDO pate de luxe is the best for bulling to a mirror shine. Its truely amazing the finish you can get with patience. The BDC is probably better for the guy who doesnt have 2 hours to spare polishing shoes! I've read somewhere that they are not a lessor product but use ingredients that werent available back in 1925 when they 1st made MDO.

This is a good question. We didn't omit it for any reason, and it is a good idea for another video in the future. The Allen Edmund is of similar quality to what we used. Their cream polish is better than the Kelly's or the Meltonian shoe creams because, I believe, it does contain a solvent. That said, the AE polishes still use petroleum-based solvents and are not going to have the same high-concentration of pigment and high-quality waxes as the Saphir Medaille d'Or.

Since you mentioned the possibility of another video including an AE product. I Would love to see the next video show you compare it on leather, rather than paper. I'm not entirely sure how absorption in a tree is relatable to absorption of skin. I'd also like to see more similarly priced options in the comparison. Kiwi at $3 a tin never had a chance against Saphir at $20+ per tin. At least compare it to Alden, AE, Angelus, or some other premium brands.

It's just like a skin cosmetics, you wont get that much of an instant result even from the most expensive products, but a long term effect may be very noticeable.

One thing I really don't get is some people trying to buy cheap care for good shoes. If you spend $500 + why would you consider saving a few dollars on a polish that will last you at least a year or two?
On the other hand, if you have low quality shoes no care will make of them Lobbs. Neither in terms of appearance nor in quality and endurance. So it's probably a waste of money.

    • @kirbyallison

I might disagree with one point. My cuter half is a restaurant manager who must wear black leather shoes with nonslip soles. His cost about $70. I spend a lot of time keeping these cheapos looking incredible with saddle soap (to clean off the restaurant grease and mop water) followed by Saphir Renovateur, Medaille d'or and Pate de Luxe. While Kiwi or Lincoln would make them look pretty good and might even protect them better, his are impeccably deep mirror shined when I nourish and polish them with Saphir products.

I can achieve the same mirror like shine with kiwi as i can with saphir (albeit more time), whether that translates to the same care as far as nourishing the leather is a different matter. Personally I find Lincoln much harder to work with it dries to quickly for me.

Kiwi is good run of the mill polish , when you don't have anything kiwi is there , but saphir is on another level altogether , I recently tried malaysian brand called star wax it has lot of carnuba it was wonderful , something in the middle of kiwi and saphir , for kiwi their creams perform better and then top coat with kiwi wax , its simple you wont polish rolce royce with tesco or cosmic polish , or high-end antique furniture with lexol , for high end shoe saphir is best for everyday aldo or clarks shoes kiwi
