  • How can the trumpet play so many notes with only 3 valves? Well, in this video I will show you how the trumpet works and how it can play a fully chromatic scale.
    There’s more information about how the valves work on a trumpet here: spinditty.com/...

    Tom, this was a wonderfully informative video. As the trumpet is a loud instrument it might help the listeners if you boosted your voice or quieted the trumpet so the resulting volume was overall balanced. Great work, mate!

    Edit from 2023: Ive kept at it and I can safely say that trumpet is really worth the effort.

    This makes so much sense. I always wondered why making "trumpet sounds" with one's lips sounds very reminiscent of an ACTUAL trumpet. So, in that way, its LESS complicated BUT requires more skill. Wonderful explanation. Thank you!!

    I played a baritone horn back in school and no one explained to me ever how the valves and the tubing created the notes/tones/pitch and i have never known until i came upon your video here that I found while looking up information about fingerings for trumpet that one of my grandkids was going to learn to play. I am sure that today his band director or the internet or a fellow musician will splain it to him sometime but I really liked that you embraced the media of youtube to create a most-simple explanation. THANK YOU. Best wishes

    This is something I’ve always wanted to know, thanks. Is it the case then that the first skills a beginner trumpeter would learn is how to be pitch perfect in the open notes, and how to make those notes with just their lips?

    I’ve always wanted to know - and to some extent I now do.
    Are the open notes all harmonics of the bass tone? Are you lips also vibrating at the pitch played?

  • @professorquack
    @professorquack ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you always have to do the base notes with your lips? Or can you go up a semitone without using the valves?

    So doesn't then holding the first and 2nd give you the same as the 3rd one? Since 1 and 2 add up to 3 which is what the 3rd is?

      I think he just tightens and loosens his lips to produce higher or lower buzzes, which make for higher or lower pitches.

    But if you can produce a full octave by just adjusting the sound produced by your lips, doesn't that mean you can produce all those tones in between just by using your lips as well?

    • @TootinTim
      @TootinTim  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      By using just your lips the pitch will go to the nearest open note in the harmonic series. That's why you need the valves.

  • @mrpiccolo3551

  • @HEAVYHONEY1
    @HEAVYHONEY1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: but, you the player still have to play the note with your lips first and then adjust it higher or lower with the valves. Yes? So, it isn't just blowing air like a flute or a recorder… You are constantly making no decisions with your mouth as you manipulate those notes with the valves. Yes?

    • @TootinTim
      @TootinTim  ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to be accurate otherwise you will split the note, miss the note, and have bad tuning. To get a nice sound you really need to be in the centre too. The higher you go the more accurate you have to be. So, you are kind of right but it would just sound really bad.

  • @Lavoye
    @Lavoye หลายเดือนก่อน

    So... Your mouth is doing the sound which is reverberated in the pipes. The trumpet does not produce the sound, it just embelishes it and transforms it. Did I get that right?

    • @TootinTim
      @TootinTim  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Essentially yes! Although the length of the trumpet will determine the notes that you can get.

  • @redXtian
