    Thank you for the video! I'm in a graduate program in a class for Molecular Spectroscopy and this was helpful. I have one question though: Does it matter which Hydrogen you observe? If so, how do you know which one to look at to determine how many peaks?

      Hi, maybe I'm too late but perhaps someone else is wondering the same thing. The way I'm learning to do it is that all of the unique protons show up in the spectrum. To clarify, you observe all of them, each one has its own individual peak/cluster of peaks. Unless you are referring to which one as in which of the 3 hydrogens on, for example, a CH3 group, then the answer to your question is that they share the same environment so they will just show up as a single peak/cluster of peaks. If I misunderstood or am being wrong here someone please correct me.

    For the second example (with Z-1-chloroprop-1-ene), why would the peaks of the quartet of doublets all be the same height? Wouldn’t the peaks in the center be higher?

    This video really helped my understanding! For the last example where there are the two equivalent red hydrogens, would there be any change in the NMR spectrum if there was only one hydrogen? I would imagine both hydrogens are split the same way as they are equivalent so would this double the intensity on the proton NMR spectrum?

      The only change for this signal would be in its intensity as you suspected. With the signal representing half as many hydrogens it would have half as much area under the peak (i.e. half the integration). Hope this helps!

    Is example 1 incorrect? If you split by 16 and then by 8 the two middle peaks would end up overlapping and make a triplet.

      You're exactly right! It would technically still be a doublet of doublets that just "looked like" a triplet. Also note that the J value for cis splitting is 6-12Hz and the J value for trans splitting is 12-18Hz. In the video I chose a value in each range and just happened to choose 8Hz and 16Hz. But had I chose any values within these ranges that were not in a 2:1 ratio then we would definitely see the doublet of doublets properly. I really should have chosen better representative numbers within those ranges to have avoided this. I'm remaking the whole playlist using a whiteboard and when I get to this lesson I will remember not to repeat this error! Thanks!

      Is this regarding the 3Hs on the left versus the 2Hs on the right? They have different environments due to the presence of the Br.
